I love this. I love that my job entails posting the new logo for Doctor Who. I love that it's such big news that I'm giving it its own separate post. I love that its such big news to Who fans that the BBC made a special video revealing it, above. I love that many Who fans will be absolutely distressed at the TARDIS-inspired design, and that its merits and flaws will be argued for weeks. I love that this utterly insignificant "announcement" will probably have the most comments of any TR article today. I love my job.
As for the logo itself? Enh. It's all right with me.

Eh, the logo's unimportant.
On the other hand, the OPENING CREDITS are a matter of world-shattering importance and I expect daily updates on rumours regarding them.

I like to say that I reserve my judgment on the new pre-pubescent Doctor, but combine that with the totally underwhelming "new" logo for the series has be cringing even before Tennant is out of the role.
I have been a Who nerd since I was five, and Jon Pertwee was the Doctor, and apart from the abortion that was the Americanized Paul McGann version (which I do NOT accept as a true doctor), this is pretty much as bad as it gets.
Yet, I still reserve my judgment and will watch the tween Doctor in his new outing. I just don't have to like it.
*grumble, grumble, Blargh.

awesome! not the best use of font, color, etc. but it does scream doctor who. if you are talking about the doctor inevitably you will bring up the tardis at some point.....either preceded or followed by the daleks.

Somehow, if they use that logo in the opening credits, it just won't be the same. I hope they update the theme -- that rock version was sweet. Maybe more techno this time?
And yes, @Nomad Scry, it fits perfectly with British aesthetic. :p

I would have liked to see a version of it without the lens flare crap...Even the reflection is a bit much. It looks like an intern just slapped it together for the old iTunes store...
That isn't to go without saying that I like the idea of making it look like the Tardis. But c'mon...it could have been pushed so much further...
And yes, opening credits matter more...wonder if they're going to make the logo float around instead of a tardis...heh...

Okay, I am sad to say I'm not all that familiar with the series.. that is why I would like to ask for some help.
Where do I start?
Take pity on my poor upbringing.
Doctor Who is HUUUGE.
I have seen one or two episodes, and a handful of Torchwood...
But if I'm gonna do it Right, where in the series should I start?

Start with the Christopher Eccleston series, and follow it through the four series that have aired so far. If you are then interested in the whole whole concept, and would also like to enjoy some really horrible special effects married to some terrific story lines, then you can wade into all of the previous Doctors... Pertwee, Baker, Davidson, Baker and McCoy. Unfortunalely, a good portion of the original Doctors, Hartnell and Troughton, are lost to time, mismanagement and fire.
As I said earlier, I have been a fan since I first watched the show as a kid during the Pertwee tenure, but all of the doctors brought something interesting to the part (McGann, the non-Doctor Doctor excepted).

I like both the new name logo and the new TARDIS inspired design, but I hope they're used SEPERATELY. Using both together would just feel redundant.
Also, as soon as you know the new mix or arrangement of the theme song... I NEED TO KNOW!!!

Actually, on second thought: less lens flare would be nice.
Other than that, I still think it's great. It's got a cool retro look, and the stills of Matt Smith's Doctor made me think of the Hartnell era for some reason which is in no way a bad thing. As long as it doesn't recall Colin Baker, retro-style Doctor Who is always fine by me.

To be fair, Bãrön vønKlýff, the Paul McGann Doctor was actually a Canadian production, not American . . . it just aired on Fox in America. And I for one thought that though the episode was hammy and silly at times, he was a very intriguing actor to be the Doctor, and would've like to seen more.
I don't care what the logo looks like, as long as the new Doctor doesn't fall in love with his companion then strand her in another dimension forever and ever no coming back we mean it then oops she came back but so we'll give her a clone as a booby prize. The hell was all that?

@Michael: "but so we'll give her a clone as a booby prize. The hell was all that?"
A clone that ages like a regular human but acts like The Doctor, don't forget.
In other words, it was Davies giving Tennant an out in case he wants to do a multi-doctor story for some future Christmas / Children in Need thing. Which, for all the bad things I have to say about RTD, was pretty cool of him.
(I mean, it also gave all the whackjob fans their Rose / Doctor kiss, but, seriously now, we know what's more important, right?)
As for the "where to start?" thing, agreed on the first episode of the new series as being an ideal spot, although the first season is a bit flat in retrospect.
Actually, this is the best catchup video they've ever done:

Start with "An Unearthly Child" 1963. Work forward from there. Soon you will worship at the altar of the goddess Barbara (Yetaxa if you're nasty).

Hey, McGann is my generatios Doctor so don't go getting all pissy at him. I'd Take him over Tennant any day of the week. The Tv Movie might have been silly but it gave us the perfect Tardis and decent effects for the first time in the Doctors history. And McGann has redeemed himself by being the Doctor pretty much longer than anyone and he's still got enough fans that they've never stopped his audio adventures.

What, wha? Davison, Baker and McCoy all do the Big Finish stuff as well, so they're all longer-tenured. Unless you're somehow counting the ten or so years after the movie as the period that he was The Doctor, in which case... no.

Yes, the 4th-7th Doctors have made audio adventures. However, Mcgann, the 8th Doctor, continued to make the audio adventures while he was still the current Doctor.
If you follow all continuity, he was the longest reigning Doctor.
Tom Baker - 1974-1981
Paul McGann - 1996-2005
(lowers head in geek shame)
Despite the plot of the TV movie, I think McGann was an excellent Doctor in his one broadcast appearance. It's a shame he did not get a bigger chance on screen.

The new logo sucks, just like this new series. I can't count the times it's gone off jumped the shark. The more control the BBC gave Davies over the new series, the worse it got.
And this is from a longtime fan who really, really tried to stay open-minded.
@satur8- McGann didn't do his first audio until 2001. He didn't "reign" except for in fanfic (well, and a few non-canonical appearances until the BBC pulled the novelizations from Virgin and started the "Lost Adventures").
