Okay. Before you watch this video, you must know the following -- if you are one of those people who feel acute sympathy embarrassment for people who are doing something hideously stupid and embarrassing, DO NOT WATCH THIS VIDEO. IT WILL DESTROY YOU. I'm only partially one of those people, and this thing makes my skin crawl so much I want to flay myself alive rather than watch.
This isn't some nerd who dresses up in a bad costume for a con; it's someone who dresses like General Zod and crashes his best friend's wedding reception to enact a lengthy, utterly traumatic skit that no one had planned for, and certainly few understood. Imagining these guys go through their routine in front totally non-nerdy friends and relatives -- what the fuck must the parents of the bride been thinking? -- is just horrible. The groom was one of the few who did know what was happening, who busts in as Superman at about the 2-minute mark, which doesn't make the rest of the video any less mortifying for all concerned. If this bride didn't divorce this dude immediately after the ceremony, this dude should thank his lucky stars for all enternity. Hell, if she didn't kill him for putting her and all those guests through that debacle, he should count himself lucky -- no court in the world would've convicted her after seeing this video. I thought it was great. As a lady nerd I would love it if my future hubby did a skit at our wedding. Every wedding is the SAME why not make it different?

A friend of mine asked me and another friend to do a skit based on Forrest Gump and Bubba at his wedding reception. Of course, neither one of us is black, and our friend was Korean, so you can imagine how well that went over.

Apparently none of you can see how much the rest of the room were laughing and applauding.
I'd never do this at my own wedding but I think everyone in the room was having a good time, and knew what was going on to some degree.
I'm normally one of the people who cringes at extreme awkwardness (which makes it hard to watch "Curb Your Enthusiasm" sometimes) but this was not awkward to the people at the reception from what I could see, so while I agree it's kinda shameful, it's still fun.

Kris replied to The Man With Two Brains:
Yeah. You know what? If the bride and groom enjoyed it, fuck everyone else. Who the hell cares? And the type of person who would plan this would already be enough of a geek that their family and friends would expect it.
Honestly, grow some balls, nerd community.

gotta agree with you...
i have a friend who was a pro wrestler and just named his first kid kal-el; so i watched that to make sure it wasn't him.
but i was surprised to hear the audience's reactions; definitely a higher percentage of people cringing at that skit watching it on youtube than of those actually watching it live.

Give it a few years. Any major Twilight fan whose 14-18 years old right now will probably want it at their wedding, which will of course be as soon as they graduate to continue the "mythos".

Yeah, because clearly, nobody was in on this joke. People normally attack party crashers half assedly with rulers and crawl away after one fake punch.
honestly, do you people not realize that some families are not complete bores?

Dudes. What is wrong with all of you? That was amazing. The crowd obviously loved the hell out of it (or maybe you didn't hear the loud cheering and laughter), and the bride looked absolutely smitten. I mean, if she's marrying the guy, she already knows he's a nerd. That kind of stunt would be expected. If anything, it was touching and sweet.

There is an awful lot of nerd bashing going on here at a nerd site. I agree with Sassafras, as a girl nerd, I would absolutely enjoy this if my beloved (guess I'm more of a bat fan then) organised this. The guests and family all sounded they were having fun and this will be a memory everyone can look back on (as opposed to the other thousand bland weddings people go to).

I'm going to go ahead and agree with the positive comments here. When I read Rob's description I was expecting a drunken skit of dorkiness interrupting the wedding ceremony while horrified guests watched on in awkward silence.
But it wasn't like that at all.
They did the skit during the reception where everyone is drunk and having a good time anyways. There was genuine laughter in the background and the bride looked happy. It's not like the skit was filled with obscure nerd references that no one would understand, it's superman. Even my grandmother knows superman.
I say power to them.

LOL. I'm guessing it was the guy who played Zod who suggested the idea as the groom looks completely embarrassed from the second he steps into the room. Anyway, the audience seemed to enjoy it. However, personally I would have gone with something more current. How about the Joker's scene where he gatecrashes the mob meeting in The Dark Knight?!!

My friend's uncle got drunk and wandered into a reception for a different wedding, being held at the same location. There he decided to throw up on the wedding cake.
This was less embarrassing than that, and only proves that "normal" weddings can be far worse than anything a nerd can dream up.
While I won't be doing anything like that, I say good on them for having fun. I liked it.

Here's the thing: If you can do something like this at your wedding, it gives me hope you are doing the ceremony for yourself, and not for parents, family, or significant others' expectations. Which speaks great things about the solidity of your relationship.

I just kind of skimmed over this yesterday at work. But the way it was being described, I thought these jackasses showed up in the middle of the wedding or something. It's the damn reception. Everyone's drunk and doing the chicken dance. A weird little skit about Superman instead of the 10th speech about how great the groom is and how they're perfect together was probably refreshing to the people in that room.
Also, if you're the sort of person who would do this at your wedding reception, I'm sure your new wife and in laws have already realized you're that guy. I seriously doubt they went home saying "Oh, he seemed like such a normal boy before this!"

Looks to me like the groom hired Zod (and Non) to do their, uh, thing and that the whole wedding party (well, his side at least) was in on it, with the best man awkwardly roped into "playing" Luthor. Props to his new wife. There's no real shock when this stuff happens at a nerd + nerd marriage, but when she's "normal" and not only lets it happen, but goes along with it. Well, that's love.

Dear Dangerous Nan
Please explain how finding my husband-to-be endearing for re-enacting a classic movie to entertain guests (and myself) at our wedding reception makes me lack class or self respect?
Self respect comes from (ironically) yourself, not what others think of you. As a bride at an unconventional wedding that is still fondly remembered by the guests 6 years later, I'd say I have my fair share of individuality and class also.

I don't know, whenever I see stuff like this (which seems like every day) I just feel like its staged. Like that video of the drunk woman who knocked down a pole and caused a tent to collapse on the guests that was actually just a Heineken promotion. No one pays for a whole wedding just to have it ruined by a stupid bit. They probably did it when all the wedding festivities were winding down and the grandparents had left and everything. Or it was staged entirely.

The biggest problem here is that 'Superman II' isn't a classic movie. It's kitsch. And it works in neither its Richard Lester nor its Richard Donner cut. Zod is a one-dimensional character, who reduces the film to a stupid black-and-white tale of good versus evil, all the more disappointing in the wake of the first 'Superman' film's fairly adult (albeit somewhat cartoonish) meditation on the nature of American myth-making.
