Um...I dunno, this looks cool. And they even worked the brooms in at the end there! Now all we need to overcome is the severe mediocrity of Jon Turtletaub and the "Wicker Man"-ness of Nic Cage, who does at least appear to be toning it down some in this trailer. I'm all sorts of interested now.

Far be it for me to support The Man (Disney, Bruckheimer, Cage) but this does, in fact, look intriguining. That might be mostly due to the fact that I've been a fan of Jay Baruchel since his days on "Undeclared" before it was canceled like every other Apatow TV show.
So... neat? Yes, neat.

It looks intriguing. Now that it is obvious that the movie is set in present times, Cage's costume looks a lot better.

I remember when they first announced Pirates of the Caribbean, and I scoffed at how silly an idea it was...and then was forced to eat large amounts of crow. It's looking like I might have to eat some servo now too, because this looks like a lot of fun!

I saw this being shot in Washington Square, and it looked pretty cool to me. There was a street book vendor setup in the park and the design was pretty damn comprehensive.

Yeah, I was pretty much ready to hate it, but... looks kinda cool.
Loved the giant metal gargoyle at the very beginning. Fantastic way to grab hold of someone's attention at the start of a trailer. :)

It looks promising. I know I'm a sucker for this type of movie, but Mr. Cage has a tendency to alienate me with his cardboard acting. He still seems pretty wooden in this trailer, however, that could just be my perception entirely.

Seems like it has nothing at all to do with the original. Good!
It looks like "Harry Potter" if HP mages didn't try to pretend it was still 1896... and sans-wands.
Looks interesting.

All the effects look great, but the actors/characters...I dunno. I imagine that most of the movie will be the apprentice being all slack-jawed and unbelieving of the magical things going on, and embracing at the very end. They can make it even dumber by having him share the Magician's power with his love interest, a la Bulletproof Monk.

phoenixphire24 replied to MattK:
I agree. The effects look great, but have zero faith in Cage being able to act. I predict a lot of blank faced staring at monsters/magic that aren't really there.

SpookyElectric replied to MattK:
Seconded. or thirded or whatever. The dialogue is cringeworthy. I have very little faith in Nic Cage's acting as well (despite Bad Lieutenant-Herzog is gods and that is all there is to it), but it doesn't look as though they've given anyone anything to work with. Effects trump writing when it comes to most film budgets. sigh.

cocacolaoso replied to SpookyElectric:
I agree. This is a big Hollywood meh. It's just another Bruckheimer production pimping up at Disney again, and look and the director resume, there is no hope of a good movie in here. And no Monica Bellucci in the trailer? Lame!
And Cage should do more movies with Herzog. He is turning into the Klaus Kinski of our generation. He is insane!

phoenixphire24 replied to cocacolaoso:
If nothing else this should make for a great "Cage look" drinking game movie.

SpookyElectric replied to cocacolaoso:
Double YES to more Herzog/Cage. I don't know if there will ever be another Herzog/Kinsky, but Herzog/Cage could be damn good.

Well I'm cautiously optimistic. Was that Alfred Molina or Ian McShane as the bad guy wizard? To imdb!
One question - does the story originally come from Fantasia? I thought it was an old pre-existing fairy tale. I just remember reading a storybook version of it that was decidedly mouse free.
Posted 12/09/2009 at 12:14:18 PM
yep, turns out its Doc. Ock. Also, the story was originally a 1797 poem by Goethe. Thanks Wikipedia!

While I kinda have a hard time taking Nicholas Cage seriously as a wizard (just my opinion, nobody bite my head off), this movie looks pretty fun. The graphics are pretty cool. Looks like it could be a good popcorn movie.

Hypersapien replied to Kuro:
But he isn't going to be a wizard. He's going to be a sorcerer.
You're right, though. I would never believe him as a wizard, but I don't think a sorcerer is too much of a stretch.
Granted, the 'sorcerer' from Fantasia had more of a wizard-y feel about him.

I think my favorite part was the very end when the kid shouts "ARE YOU INSANE?" and Nic Cage responds with his fingers. I thought that was genuinely funny.
I think we see a lot of the wise old wizard archetype, I'm looking forward to seeing the kind of sorcerer who's seen so many strange things and sees the world in such a strange way that he is a little insane.

Eh I'm somewhat hopeful. Cage, while not a good actor, can do things on screen that make me smile. It's sorta like Walken, you pay to see him pull off his usual, natural mannerisms.

Wow. I'm torn. It looks pretty interesting, but I would have preferred someone just a little older as the sorcerer, or at least someone who wasn't Nic Cage.
And I don't envy the poor actor who is about to take on a role last played by Mickey Mouse. That's just unfair.

The trailer looks okay I just don't like them saying it's based on Sorcerer's Apprentice (the short that is). I mean at least there's one scene of water and brooms, but still. I mean the Wizard's name isn't even Yensid... how easy would that have been. Or name the kid mickey. Then I'd think "hey, this crappy movie is actually based on that Fantasia piece"

This isn't a movie. It's a documentary. Nicolas Cage has got to be an actual freaking sorcerer. That's the only way this many people would be looking at that movie trailer and saying, "Oh, cool," instead of "Oh my fucking god what is wrong with Nicolas Cage's godamn hair and how does he keep getting roles in movies like this?" like they should be.
