I hate seeing stuff like this. I know the list is different when account for inflation of ticket prices. I wish we could break it down by number of tickets sold.
I'm not saying either of those movies wouldn't be in the top 10, but I doubt they would be #1 & #2.

There are lists that do. Lucas is out pimping a book with one.
Read in the paper the other day that based on inflation of ticket prices avatar will soon surpass the original Pinoccio... Pinnocy... The Wooden Boy With a Growing Nose at number 33.

Hell, I got one from a dollar store a couple years ago that had the top five of every year until 2002 ranked that way.
Of course, I think there was some screwing with the formula, because the author kept insisting on pointing out that the original Star Trek movie was - to that point - the most successful and therefore the best. I believe the author also worked on TMP, so methinks there was a bit of statistical fudgery going on.

As you point out, the designation of Avatar as a "top grosser" is BS. Adjusted for inflation, "Gone with the Wind" is still the champ at $3 billion in 2009 dollars.

JPyke replied to David Allen:
On the "Adjusted for Inflation" list it's currently ranked #26. Higher than 'Thunderball', but lower than 'Grease'.

I'm going to, perhaps foolishly, hold on to my idealistic belief that it's primarily due to how much one has to pay to see a 3D movie. (Speaking of, why won't they let me see a 3D movie with some glasses I kept from the last 3D movie I saw? I actually have to pay $5 more for another pair of magic Ray Bans? Frak.)

Monkey boy replied to Lt.:
By all means cling to that belief, so long as you realize that it's false and the reasons why have been pointed out in countless articles already. But if you keep yourself uninformed it's easy to believe whatever you want.
Basically, while increased 3d prices probably account for some inflated box office gross even if you factored that into the equation you would still have a ridiculously, ridiculously successful movie.

Why do I get the feeling that soon this will spread into a cult/religion and within a few years there begins some mass suicides as these "believers" feel it is the way to Pandora?

Nope, just have been avoiding most of the "news" that involves this movie. Ok, so any day now the mass suicides will occur. Within months the surviving cult types erect churches to honor their new religion.

I figured this would happen after opening weekend. Its james cammeron's lifes work. The reason he was able to pull off the feat is because everyone wants to see the 'phenomenon' that is Avatar.
He created new tech and has revolutionized the way movies are made.
Soon enough everyone will make movies with this tech and avatar will be remembered as the movie that started the revolution and Cammeron will get all the credit for being the genius behind it and blah blah blah. Noone will remember the story. Cuz its not important what is improtant is the new tech
Posted 01/25/2010 at 01:12:45 PM
ZADL replied to tvtastegood:
Well, it's easy to forget the story because there wasn't one. Or at least, there wasn't one ounce of originality in the plot at all. If it wasn't for the eye-candy I would have been bored out of my mind.
White People are evil, except the White Savior who seduces the Native Chick Who Hates Him At First. There you go, that was the story. Nothing else in the film mattered at all, except the visuals, which I admit were very pretty.

PinballWizard replied to tvtastegood:
You sure about that? Quick, name the first movie to feature synched up dialogue (aka, the first "talkie").
Can't do it huh?
Sure this tech is groundbreaking and revolutionary, but why go see it when it's clearly been wasted on a bullshit movie with a bullshit story?
That's like saying it's worth spending millions of dollars on a souped up racecar, only to drive it to the corner market twice a week; sure you look flashy and stylish while doing so, but everyone thinks you're an idiot for using such great technology on such a mundane task.

Go to Box Office Mojo to see what the all time movies are when adjusted for inflation.
http://boxofficemojo.com/alltime/adjusted.htm
#6 Titanic
#26 Avatar (and still climbing)
#96 Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Not too shabby for Mr. James Cameron.
I still need to see Titanic and Avatar sometime before I die just to see what the fuss was/is all about.

Listen! Regardless of inflation, this is a bad movie. What we need to do is stop talking about it because if we ignore the problem then it will just go away and people won't be drawn into it like the Na'vi and catnip.

I think this hype should be taken with a grain of salt. Yes, Avatar is a highly successful movie and deserves praise for the CG effects, but the biggest grossing movie of all time? I doubt that.
First, look at the number of theaters: I'm sure Avatar opened in more theaters in 2009 than there were total theaters in the country when Gone With the Wind was released.
Second, it seems like every blockbuster movie sets a new record: Transformers 2 takes in 3 gazillion dollars in its first weekend, then beaten by the latest Harry Potter movie, then beaten by Avatar.
Spider-Man 4 has probably already set a new opening-weekend record and the script hasn't even been written yet!
How many movies are opening on a Wednesday (sometimes Tuesday night) and counting this as part of the "opening weekend"? Um, a weekend is technically Saturday and Sunday, and maybe Friday night.
Next, factor in the cost of 3D: if the 3D movie costs twice as much, only half as many people need to see it to make the same amount of money.
The real box office number should be a ratio of how much money the movie made versus the price of a ticket.
If Gone With the Wind made a million dollars at the box office, but the price of a ticket was 10 cents, then that could be a better ratio than Avatar's $1.8 billion take versus a $20 ticket.

Capsulesn'Coffee replied to Xenos:
yah...., about that. Last I heard Cameron claimed there will be "more" Avatar movies.....while I enjoyed the first one, there is no fucking reason for a sequel or...a trilogy. Worst of all is that this means Battle Angel is pretty much six feet under. Which, If this info is correct, pisses me off to no end

Xenos replied to Capsulesn'Coffee:
Supposedly he's been doing pre-production work alongside Avatar. They both use the same tech. Whether he changes engines to do an Alita movie as a follow up or a direct Avatar sequel, I think has still yet to be determined. Not that I'm holding my breath, but he even said after the globes that he wasn't sure what was next. There's also the (relatively) smaller film The Dive he keeps talking about.

Isn't the box office take on Avatar skewed thou? I mean, are they accounting for inflation and the 3D ticket prices being more than "normal" tickets?
I'm willing to bet that Titanic was seen by many more people than Avatar. I still only know of ONE person who saw Avatar so far....when Titanic was out, it seemed like EVERYONE had seen it.

Reverse for me. I don't know anyone that saw Titanic in the theater (in any of the 4 major cities I am usually in during the year). But everyone I know has seen Avatar, many of them more than once.

You can argue about inflation and how many people actually went to see a film (I remember reading that supposedly more people went to see Ghostbusters at the cinema than Titanic), it doesn't really matter in the end. You either like or dislike Avatar, and frankly its box office gross is immaterial when it comes to that side of things.

Right on, John!
I believe that the highest grossing film of all times, adjusting for inflation of course, is either Gone with the Wind or Wizard of Oz.
I just can't wait until a film breaks the one billion mark on opening night. Of course, by then ticket prices will be a million dollars each, not counting Imax.
