On February 12th, NASA decided to wake up the space shuttle Endeavor crew with a little mood music. Specifically, "The Ballad of Serenity," better known as the theme song to Joss Whedon's Firefly (it begins at 2:55 in the above video). I'm sure astronaut Bob Behnken and the others would have preferred a sultry space courtesan played by Morena Baccarin, but when you've been shot into space, I suppose you take what you can get. That's pretty damn cool.
But--I must ask--does anyone else hate that song? I always skipped past it or muted it. It's a generic, half-witted cow-tipper whinge about bein' hard done by: "They took mah loove...they took my laaaaynd. They took awhr jawbs..." Yeah, put a sock in it, ya shit-dribbling space-redneck.
Love Firefly; hate Nu Cuntry.

I don't like country at all, but I love that opening theme. It was perfect for the show, and it's one of my favorites. Probably because it's the only country song that I listen to. (And no, Johnny Cash doesn't count as country, because he's muthafrakking Johnny Cash, and in a class all his own.)
Now the opening song to Enterprise is the worst theme song to any show I've ever seen. That one I'll mute or skip or stick my fingers in my ears and sing la-la-la to. But then, I do the same thing for the entire episode, really.

Granted, the lyrics are a straight fit in that tune. I guess I just want all theme songs to be as good as Dr.Who (the Orbital mix, none of that shit with string sections in it).
I don't even like Dr.Who, really, but I've a certain respect for it, just on account of the theme song...
(sorry if the link doesn't work, I don't even know the basic html stuff)

Yeah, that was nifty. But when they have reavers for their wake up call, that's when the good stuff really starts.

Is playing this song a subtle way of telling them that their mission funding has been cut?

Cooool. Sonny Rhodes must be happy.
Of course it would have been cooler if they played the song off the actual soundtrack CD instead of the DVD so that way you wouldn't have to hear the sound effects from the show in the background.

Sadly, with NASA's manned spaceflight funding disappearing, they can 'take the sky from me.'
And ditto about the "Enterprise" song. Absolutely wretched. They should have stuck with the 'mirror universe' one, as suggested.

It would be so cool to Watch Serenity while floating in zero G in the Space Station!
