I'm a Sherlock Holmes fan/snob, so I was pretty worried about this flick. It ended up better than I thought it was going to be, but it's wasn't much of an actual Sherlock Holmes tale -- more about action set pieces than an actual mystery to solve. On the other hand, Jude Law did make an outstanding Watson.
• Alice in Wonderland
The Disney one. Probably came out on DVD before, but here it is again, just in case.
• The Killer
On Blu-ray and on DVD. Shockingly, this is the first time -- other than the long out-of-print Criterion ones -- that The Killer has been on anamorphic widescreen on DVD. I'm upgrading my copy later today.
• Strike Witches
An anime starring young teenage girls who are also military planes and are highly sexualized. So... naked teenage plane girls. Whee.
• I Sell the Dead
Merry/Charlie from Lost is a 19th century graverobber who has to deal with zombies, vampires, and more. Guest-starring Ron Perlman... of course.
• High Kick Girl
I'll just let the trailer speak for itself.
• Lupin the 3rd: Episode Zero: First Contact
I love Lupin the 3rd, but I don't particularly need to know how the gang got together. If you do, here's the 2002 TV special that covered it.
• Bigfoot
A Bigfoot movie from Troma, listed entirely for the benefit of Bigfoot-obsessed, frequent TR collaborator Chris Cummins.

Rob, if you enjoy Lupin the 3rd at all, you need to see Episode Zero. It's almost as good as Castle of Cagliostro. The show's been running so long that all the new antics don't have enough "newness" to them. I found Episode Zero to be just a really solid that wasn't bound to all the stuff about the crew that you've already been introduced to.

At least she kicks high. Personally I'm more scared to run into Low Kick Girl.
-
You are a genius!

I never buy a movie I haven't seen first. But from what I read Netflix and WB made a deal where Netflix gets cheaper rates for movies and possible more instant viewing releases. The only way I see this being a good deal is if after 30 days you can watch new releases instantly.
-
Just wanted to add in that Target has Serenity blue-ray on sale this week for $10!
-
I still don't understand how it got localized. I haven't seen it, but: seriously Funimation...out of all the series you could have localized/dubbed..."Panty Witches"? Seriously? Plus Funimation is also dubbing Dance in the Vampire Bund, an even more disturbingly loli show...WTF? At least that one will be getting edits for the US release.
-
I thought that was Dark Side of the Moon and The Wizard of Oz?
-
I can't disagree with you. American media has the same issue: pandering to the lowest common denominator. Why make a well thought out drama when Celebrity Dating Weight Loss Challenge 5 will get higher ratings and be cheaper to produce. Why make an anime with realistic characters and a good plot when you can have magical catgirls in their underwear and sell tons and tons of merchandise? Until people stop buying/watching it (which I don't see happening anytime soon) it will continue to go down that route.

Comeback Of The Week.

I am disappointed in Japan. Shouldn't a trailer for a movie where a school girl does lots of high kicks emphasize the chance of seeing her panties and not on her stunts?
-
Love how the entirety of the High Kick Girl trailer is selling the movie based on the spectacle of seeing a girl getting repeatedly kicked several times in the head.
-
What? Jude Law a good Watson? For one Watson was a bit pudgy and not as athletic as Holmes. And true Watson was a medical doctor in Afghanistan but he got his injury through a shrapnel. He never fought the war. He was just a doctor. Watson always carried a gun whenever he went to missions with Holmes cause I guess other than his lack of fighting abilities, he also had a limp which surely wouldnt help if he got in a fistfight against two people. And why did they have to give a sheathed sword to watson? I dont remember him having any in the story. I could go on for a long time about all the discrepancy with the movie and the book but i shall let it rest. Neverthless it was a good popcorn movie that could have gone with any other name than Sherlock Holmes. Poirot maybe? I think Hollywood would put Christian Bale as Poirot.

If you read the statement, they *did* explain what nekomimi was... so I don't understand what you're getting bent out of shape about. Nekomimi is when a character just has cat ears or tail; sometimes they pop on randomly if a character is being mischievous. Furry is usually a more anthropomorphized animal. I see no sign of anime superiority in the statement. They're just saying all anime is not necessarily fanservice shit. As for the rest of your post: Bishie: short for bishounen (and maybe bishoujo, I'm not sure). Bishounen are the pretty boys. Bishoujo are the pretty girls. Moe: lots of debate over what this actually means; most anime nerds fight over it themselves. I take it to mean something overly cute you feel protective towards. Say... a kitten or a cute kid. Yuri: Girl/girl relationship anime. Yaoi is guy/guy. Tsundere: again, a debatable term among anime nerds. I'm not 100% sure on this myself; I think it's something like a violent girl who has a hidden soft side.

Your friend is a harlot and a deciever

That's a lotta "ass" in just a little sentence.
-
Oh mans Bigfoot! This movie is awesome in a cheesy way. It was filmed where I live and, for the longest time the dvd was only available at The IGA That Time Forgot. It's great that this got a Troma release and now more that just locals can watch it.
-
Huh, weird...I Sell the Dead has been sitting over at my local Blockbuster for the past month. Also, I liked Sherlock Holmes, and I was surprised at how well it did at the box office when it was against Avatar during its entire run.
-
defintly going to pick up sherlock holmes to see how Robert pulls off holmes and the killer will have to get heard and finaly check it out. bigfoot will have to see how much love the people at Troma put into it aka how cheesy it is. Lupin the third thought there was some legal issues preventing the film from being released or was that a different lupin film.
-
Something about an asian girl kicking assassins' asses makes my wang hard
-
Just watched 'I sell the dead'. Actually pretty funny. It's low-budget, but you can tell that the actors are having fun.
-
It's just what? You know what irritates me about anime fans or otaku or whatever you want to be called? It's dropping your cutesie little weeaboo fan jargon everywhere. I have no idea what 'nekomimi' means, and I'm sure as heck not going to look it up. Stop doing that! You're obviously talking to people who aren't anime fans, why not try to reach out and explain that stuff, or talk to non-anime geeks in a way that we can understand? Why build a little wall of "my fandom is better than your fandom" around yourself? It's rather immature. And it's even worse when you use that stuff in discussions of AMERICAN media. I'm still not really sure what any of those bishi/moe/yurri/stundre words mean (even though I've tried looking a few up) but I see them all over the freakin' place. Whenever I see anyone talking about Batman in those terms, red-flags go off in my head screaming "hopeless immature anime nerd".
-
"It ended up better than I thought it was going to be, but it's wasn't much of an actual Sherlock Holmes tale -- more about action set pieces than an actual mystery to solve. On the other hand, Jude Law did make an outstanding Watson." Okay, I'm not sure that you're as well versed in Holmes as you claim to be. Remember "The Sign of Four"? That particular Holmes story pretty much solved the mystery not too far into the book, and one of the last scenes involved a chase in a shipyard after a man with a peg leg and a pygmy with a blow dart. Not too different from the movie.
-
It's my understanding there was no deal. The studios basically told Netflix "no new movies until 30 days have elapsed." Which does not benefit Netflix in any way. Too bad most people buy their movies based on quality, not newness.
-
What the fuck are you talking about, it didn't have a mystery to solve? It had one of the most convoluted but pretty satisfying mysteries I've seen and actually managed to make sense at the end.
-
Yeah, I'm with Rob on the whole Sherlock Holmes movie. Holmes and Watson weren't a two man SWAT team! But as just a normal movie, it was pretty good. Oh, man, you should see First Contact, Rob. Seriously, it's the movie that got most of my friends into Lupin 3rd and personally my favorite movie. It's really worth watching, you so won't be disappointed.
-
A friend of mine told me that Sherlock Holmes is not a good movie.
-
Imagine my suprise when I read that Sherlock Holmes was coming out. I have netflix and didn't see it on new releases. Oh after some research I found out that they struck a deal with WB that they wont be getting new releases for a month.
-
Nonono, Strike Witches is the embodiment of why most people, even in their teens, get the misconception that anime is complete bullshit. Seriously, it's cluelessness. Also, having cat ears isn't "furry" unless they are literally furry. Having cat ears and a tail or whatever is just nekomimi.
-
Man, High Kick Girl actually looks pretty awesome. It's like every bullied kid's dream come true, except with a skirt.
-
It's also the embodiment of why lots of anime fans are bemoaning the imminent death of the industry. You should see some of the merchandise for it. ...Yeah, on second thought, no you shouldn't. *shudder*
-
I admit it's a bit of a guilty pleasure for me, but the fanservice is out of control. The random bath scenes, the fact that they never wear pants at any time (seriously at one point their commander goes to address her military superiors in her panties), and the entire episode about someone stealing their underwear. It's so bad... To make it more confusing the creators obviously put in a good amount of research into the designs. All the planes, guns, and pilots are modeled after real WW2 people/equipment. They put in all this effort to make all this stuff authentic for their nonsense magical catgirl series.
-
I'm a big Sherlock fan too. The movie was alright. I felt it was a little too long for it's own good. But a decent flick.
-
It isn't Friday, but we still appreciate the news.
-
Just watched the trailer for strike witches. This is the embodiment of why most people past their teen years think anime is complete bullshit. Also, your description was slightly lacking, they are actually FURRY teenage plane girls, with cat ears AND human ears because why the fuck not.
-
So, given Sherlock's moderate success, how long until we get an episode of House where the good doctor has to prove that Senator Blackwood didn't actually rise from the grave?
-
I creamed in my jeans when I found out The Killer was being re-released, just thought I'd let you guys know.
-
have been waiting for High Kick Girl since I first saw the teaser 2 years ago. When I heard that it was geting released on dVD here for Region 1 I pro-ordered that thing promptly. Now if only Raging Pheonix would get picked-up as well...
-
"Do you wanna feel faint?" I died a little inside.
-
Ohhh new Lupin movie today :3 I bought a copy of the Japanese release a few years back, but I'm probably going to buy this just to have something with subs/support the series and help it to maybe get some of the other specials released here. It's actually one of the best specials that's come out in a long, long time, Rob--Check it out, as a hardcore fan myself, I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
-
That girl seems remarkably happy to be kicked in the face for some reason. "That's me!" ...riiigghhtt.
-
Ah, finally there's a good copy of Alice in Wonderland to sync my CD of "The Wall" to. There's no other good use for that movie.
