Although I'm a big fan of the original U.K. series Spaced, which of course starred Simon Pegg and was directed by Edgar Wright, I had only ever heard of the disastrous American version, which was famously made by Fox, produced by McG and without the knowledge or consent of any of the show's original creators. I had also heard it was fucking terrible, which I didn't particularly doubt. Unfortunately, a clearly malevolent Simon Pegg tweeted a link to the above video, featuring scenes from the American version of Spaced, and, well, long story short, how do you get vomit out of a computer keyboard?

This is horrible.
To be fair... the producer of the original that was neither Pegg nor Wirght was the one to bring this abortion to Fox.

Hailing from the UK, I first watched spaced (the version worth recognizing) when it was first shown on channel 4. It was the most genius piece of original television to grace our screens in the past decade. This smells like a binmans cuff. It's pretty much, word for word, a blatent rip-off. I'd like to see how they destroy some of the other characters, for me tyres (the east-end London, druggie courier) was the best. I think rob should make a daily list of the top British series to be creativly raped for an American audience.
I just hope and pray there will never be a Mighty Boosh USA. Little Britain was bad enough.

It's like a whole new level of awful. I feel I must, out of respect, go back and watch the whole series of Spaced (the real one) just to try and make up for that short span of awfulness that is nothing but pure vomit inducing wannabe programming.

I got less than two minutes into it before I gave up. Absolute shit. BTW @Statch tires was northern Irish, not east-end london. Also @Doogz The Office may be (well ok, definitely is) the best example of an american remake of a british TV show but I'd still much rather watch Three's Company than Robin's Nest.
Posted 03/03/2010 at 06:15:55 PM
Doogz replied to Kev Weldon:
You mean "Man About The House". The remake of "Robin's Nest" was "Three's A Crowd", at least the US title hinted that it was a spin-off. Frankly, the whole lot of 'em are bag of rancid rabbit droppings anyway, IMHO.

I've never been able to get through an episode of the original. I didn't quite get it- what, are they all geek/stoners? I get that every day at work, it's not really interesting. To be fair though I only tried one episode, and my kids made me turn it off.
This looks fine to me! I'd give it a try. The freaky artist guy was kind of funny, the girl from Less Than Perfect is in it before she got skinny and boring, and god help me, I like Will Sasso.
Flame on nerds. Also- What was with the cloaking street car?

Though I LOVE the original. I'm willing to give this version a chance.

John Hazard replied to Paolo Mongon:
Well- I don't think we're going to get the chance- it wasn't picked up.
Doctor Who, Red Dwarf, Life on Mars- has any Brit Sci Fi show translated well to an American version? Sitcoms seem able to transition from one shore to the other.
Posted 03/03/2010 at 08:11:13 PM
Asat replied to John Hazard:
By "well" do you mean "I want it to be exactly like the original, except using American actors"? Because that's the standard many geeks appear to endorse. After hearing for years how wretched the American "Red Dwarf" was, I was stunned at how not-godawful it was. Not very good, and a LONG way down from the original first two seasons...but then again, so were the final three years of the UK RD.
Never watched "Spaced", but this wasn't terrible either. Not good enough to finish watching, but Gregory Sierra as Exidor held my attention for a while. If this is just a pilot, a more polished premiere would likely have been...merely average. But not the abomination some posters are whining about.

Xenos replied to John Hazard:
Yeah, probably oggling Sarah Rue kept me alive through that. Kinda amazing how much sexier she looks when she's got some more weight on her. When she got too skinny she just didn't look as good.
Posted 03/03/2010 at 07:37:03 PM
Paolo Mongon replied to Xenos:
dude what?! Rue is way hotter now.
To each their own I guess....she did go topless in Gypsy83..

ZeroCorpse replied to Xenos:
I'm with you. Rue is hot when she's got some meat on her bones. She's boring and plain when she's skinny. I could fall in love with her in this (and Gypsy 83, and Less Than Perfect), but the skinny version doesn't do as much for me... It just makes her look typically Hollywood.

This wasn't terrible. It was a damn sight better than the American Red Dwarf.

ZeroCorpse replied to Connor225:
Yeah. I was kinda wondering that myself. However, it's been established that I'm too cool to be a nerd, but too much of a nerd to be cool, so I guess I just didn't get the groupthink when it came to "Spaced". It was OK, but I'm not one to go wild when I see a pop culture reference to something I enjoy in a TV show... Unless it's in The Venture Bros.
-
But Spaced relied on those references and geek-recognition jolts. The Venture Bros. has its own humor and the geek-recognition is just icing on the delicious, slightly evil cake.
Posted 03/03/2010 at 10:09:45 PM
DoctorSmashy replied to ZeroCorpse:
Spaced is so much more than just nerdy references. It's not just a string of geeky one-liners relying on pop culture references for humour. In fact, there is only actually one nerd in the programme. Its storylines and 'villains' may be cartoony and surreal, but underneath that there are original characters that have depth and are wonderfully true to life.
And to Connor225, this wasn't lifted word for word and shot for shot. The only part that was was the first 2 and a half minutes or so, the rest was all new.

I am not a religious person but I do PRAY THAT AN AMERICAN RIP OFF OF SPACED NEVER ACTUALLY HAPPENS, Because if it does that will truly mark the END OF DAYS! But I guess it will continue to happen because americans steal ideas- they don't make them anymore. This has been happening forever- All in the family was a UK show before we took it. Chad, good buddy, you really need to see the original version as that part was lifted word for word. However, the original version is infinitely better thanks to editing, camerawork, sound and the great work of Mark Heap, who plays Brian.
It's actually quite an interesting tool to use for film students to determine how technique can determine quality. The only other time I've seen a similar example is the TV movie of 'Heat' that Michael Mann also directed, featuring the classic 'coffee shop' scene word for word but nowhere near as good.

Interesting to note the number of you guys who prefer the US Version of The Office over the UK one. I gave it a go and it is a lot better than the original for the simple reason that Ricky Gervais is a smug git, Steve Carell at least umbues the Character with some sympathetic traits.
At least you guys over in the U.S. like the original Spaced, it was a classic.
