I'm not going to lie; I haven't watched it yet (again, 90 minutes long) but the trailer was awesome so I have high hopes, my friends. Overall, it's not been a bad week for fan-made movies of popular Capcom videogames. Hell, Capcom should just stop fucking around with Hollywood and just start working directly with the fans. Thanks to Mikey W. for the tip.

Let me give a pretty neutral opinion about this, from a non Megaman-fan Again, as many said, as a fan made movie it was pretty good. Actually, if you think about it, it's kind of the same quality of the Power Rangers series, which is quite an achievement. Now as the movie goes. The 3D effects were so early 2000-ish. Really really unrealistic and cheesy. So were the special effects. Like Fireman's fire. They should've made fire balls instead. Or even Iceman's ice. Stuff everybody with Motion or After Effects can easily do. The plot. Well, the idea by itself was pretty good, but 90 minutes is not enough to convey all the emotions of the single characters. It's kind of like the Dragonball movie. 90 minutes is not enough. But even worse was the fighting part. Just randomly teleporting to each enemy and fighting it for less than 5 minutes is awful. Now I understand that's how Megaman games are, but dammit, it's a movie, not a video game. Fans complain so much when video game-based movies are not exactly like the video games, but a successful movie CANNOT be exactly like the game. I remember the complaints about the Super Mario movie. Know what, that movie was awesome. If it wasn't for the fact that Mario and Luigi had no italian accent, the whole story was pretty funny. Now can you imagine a movie based on Mario jumping on mushrooms and platforms? As far as the acting goes. Light was very good, so was Wily in his own way. Megaman's acting was quite good, but restricted by time. The girlwas kind of funny, but she was very ugly and certainly not what Roll was supposed to be (and no love between the two? Come on!) So, what can I say. As a movie, I enjoyed it. Certainly liked it more than Dragonball Evolution (I know it's based on a Manga, but for me it's pretty much the same category), but less than SuperMario. IMO not a waste of time to watch, in fact I would've watched it in a movie theater, perhaps with my family.
-
shopped. Just kidding :) What an acomplishment for an amatuer film, incredible! I'd love to see mega man made professionally, I'd imagine it would be on a par with Iron Man
-
To be fair, odds are the creators didn't have much of a budget to work with. I thought it was really good for a fan-made movie.
-
As a movie it sucked, but as a fan film it rocked. The use of close ups for damn near all the scenes were obviously needed for the fact that the budget was probably a bit over a few thousand. I think if Hollywood got hold of Mega Man it would be no more than another Astro boy. If these people had the money for it I would imagine that it would be on par with some of the big name superhero movies out there. I love the nods to other things like Metal Gear Awesome and various games and movies. Defiantly going to recommend to others.
-
Yeah, Roll is both creepy and kind of cute. This is really pretty awesome for a fan film... the pacing is a little off and the dialog (although better than most video game films) is meh in parts, but definitely fun for fans.
-
It's too bad The Megas was used for the credits, instead of a superior videogame based band. And how Megaman is randomly three stories tall in the last shot. Otherwise, an enjoyable film.
-
hopefully a sequal would be made, a movie based off of debatably the best Megaman game, with this style should be just simply perfect
-
I like how he used thomas and albert for the names of the scientist. Im guessing for albert einstein and thomas edison. Should be switched though edison was the malicous one lol
-
Amazing. GREAT GREAT Fanmade flick... :)
-
I think as far as teleporting around the castle it looks like they fudged a little and gave megaman the jetboots upgrade from X. I'm alright with that though. So much time has passed that the games run together for me. I liked it.
-
I agree with both of those points. First things I noticed as well.
-
Hey Dr.Wily! easy with the meth will you. it's bad for the skin
-
Doesn't need to have a big Hollywood budget. The effects were fine for something fan done (and in some cases exceeded my expectations) but the writing was awful. Half the time I expected to be interrupted by cheesy porno music and have them start making out.
-
I liked Roll, Dr. Wily(loved his performance), Gutsman's death, Fireman and the music (especially the music based off the Blues Whistle). Everything else, especially the things that came out of Dr. Light's mouth blew hard chunks. Your drinking game is every time the movie makes you think "BULLSHIT!"
-
I think you only read the part where Zac said the effects weren't any good and just focused on that. While it is true that top notch effects are out of reach for zero budget filmmakers, finding and directing good acting and knowing how to block a scene isn't, and that's probably what stood out a lot more to Zac rather than a lack of great CGI, which should be understood as something that's going to happen. There are plenty of indie filmmakers and people who literally have no budget out there, but at least they know how to properly film a scene and use correct lighting schemes, which honestly is what the fan-film failed to do. I definitely respect the hard work made into a film and you can certainly tell that the guy was head over heels for this project, but in the end, you have to judge something bluntly for what it is, a movie. It's a fantastic symbol for fans, but as a movie, it's just sub-par at best.
-
Wiley's acting was dead on. Roll was pretty good in her own way. For a fanmade flick it was excellent. Loved the song at the end.
-
That was AWESOME!!!!!! Keep the movies comming! I was expecting some junk movie but boy was i wrong. This was amazing! Great job guys and gals!
-
14:29 - "2) Articial Intelligence" Um, Artificial, maybe?
-
My only problem was the songs at the end. "I Wanna Be the One" by The Megas is good, but I would have preferred the super rocking version, "Gotta Run/Be the One" by Brentalfloss and The Megas
-
So you're pretty much saying that these movies should be fan films with a Hollywood budget? How about Hollywood films with the approval of hardcore fans who are involved in writing the script, and have a lot of creative control? I think this method works better. The people who know what they're doing, do what they do best. The director, writer, producer do their thing and the fans tell them if how they're doing it is wrong.
-
I love Mega Man with all my heart, but this kind of sucks. You don't need a hollywood budget to make a decent fan made mega man film. This is bad acting, bad writing, bad plot direction, bad fight choreography and I'm sure a bunch of other things. It doesn't take much to money to make this a better movie.

Minibosses & NESkimos
-
This is the longest 90 minutes of my life and I want them back. This was painful to watch, the acting was bad and the writing was beyond hackneyed. Yes, the effects are equally bad, but at least the budget constraints give that an excuse. The former two have none. To all the people who said you enjoyed this. I have to ask if the name Mega Man was not attached to it would you still have liked it? Video game do not make good movies, period. There is not enough narrative in them, as well as too much action, to from a decent plot. The opposite is why movies do not make good games.
-
the guy who played Dr. Wily made me lul hard. this was.. interesting to say the least.
-
How this person didn't research The Minibosses, is beyond me. For those not familiar http://www.minibosses.com/brassmp3s/09megaman2.mp3
-
The production values were very impressive for a fan film, and a lot of time and work obviously went into the effects and costumes. The story, however was EXTREMELY dull -- and you can lay that on the fidelity to the game. The Megaman games were some of the most fun games released for NES, but not great stories. I'm not sure you can make a great 90-minute movie of Megaman because there really is not that much narrative in the game, and cool fight scenes are only so entertaining without more compelling narrative conflict. As entertainment goes, it was kind of like watching someone else play Megaman.
-
I think a huge problem with making video games into movies is that they tend to be episodic and movies aren't. The basic set-up is, fight minions, beat the stage boss, repeat. Video games would make much better tv shows than movies. I'm not going to say this movie was awesome, but it wasn't awful either. But, I do think it'd be better as series of 23 minute episodes with each one featuring a different robot master with the finale being Dr. Wily's defeat.
-
Why do I even get up in morning knowing individuals can make shit as cool as this?
-
So which game had the needless, and bountiful failed attempts at character development? I think it was Megaman 6, or possibly seven. Its been awhile.
-
For the lack of resources that they had this is a very impressive fete. It's not only watchable, it's downright awesome in parts. Really, well done.
-
They forgot to thank All Capcom Staff.
-
goddammit, this is really good but it won't stop fucking lagging! I can't watch for more than 30 seconds without it freezing up and the audio getting choppy! Anybody got a link where i can download it instead?
-
While I appreciate the dedication to the source material and the obvious extreme effort it took to produce this, it frankly wasn't good. The effects are impressive for what was probably a very small budget, and I can certainly enjoy the work they put into this. It was just a bad movie. Megaman is a hard story to tell without being cheesy, and they accomplished that (Dr. Wily and his bad mustache notwithstanding--they couldn't find ANYONE who could GROW a mustache?), but I just couldn't finish it. Too long, too poorly acted, too badly choreographed, too crappy of a movie. A++++++ for effort and elbow grease. D- for overall quality.
-
Dr Wily (Dave Maulbeck) is a member of NYC comedy team "Chet Watkins". You can watch him (and them) every Wednesday night at the Magnet Theater on 254 West 29th Street. Come on out and support!
-
Maybe if videogame companies DID turn to fan-made flicks (just the REALLY good ones like that one) then a little more time and money could be spent making it into what it COULD be (not that it WASN'T awesome). And it really IS one of the only ways to get your foot through the door if they'll have it unless you're blowing some big exec somewhere.
-
I actually answered "Yes, Roll. Your hair does look fake." And Roll has always had this eerie attractiveness to her, whether it was her 8-bit sprite, her animation in 8, design in Legends, and even her looks in Marvel Vs. Capcom. I think looking at her in any form automatically hyponotizes you, making you a sleeper agent or something.
-
well, I liked it. for what it was. Considering it was a no budget independent fan film. It's 90 minutes long, has decent special effects, and follows the megaman story pretty fucking closely, it's good. i think what bothered me most is that dr.light and dr.wily never used each other's first name when addressing each other. I'd personally would like to see the film they could make with an actual budget, and based on Megaman.
-
Now lets be realistic, we all complain about big Hollywood movies but none of us have made big Hollywood movies. Just because someone doesn't like something or complains about it doesn't mean they have to be able to do better, that's just not intellectually honest. I have never played Mega Man, so I have no idea how close to the source material this is. As a student film, or fan made film, it's cool and impressive, but I certainly wouldn't call it awesome or get all super excited about it and say video game companies should abandon Hollywood and go with these fan films. I think the comment that best explains it is EPIC NERD FAIL...gold star for the attempt, bronze for the execution.
-
While I'd kill for a proper Metroid movie, I don't think a fan film would suffice. This and MGS: Philanthropy are about the tip of fan film greatness, if you ask me, and neither come close to looking good enough to work for Metroid. It'd take too many weird sets, too much CGI, and some extremely elaborate props. But damn, I'd love to see one made. Now a Double Dragon movie done right, that'd be doable.
-
considering the fact they couldn't get a decent enough child actor to portray either rock and roll (OMG I JUST GOT THAT -sarcasm- XD ), i'd say this is as close as we can get to a loving tribute to its source material. i mean, hey, it could be worse: he could opt to base it on either the Captain N appearances of rock, or the american-made animation show -shudders-
-
While Mega Man has never really been my bag, I enjoyed it for the most part. I'd like to see this guy tackle something that IS more up my alley, like Metroid or Mario...
-
I have to say it lost me pretty early on, too. While I am impressed with the work and talent that went into it, it, I couldn't get into it. Two things REALLY bugged me: A) Is that a man in a wig playing the blond girl? and B) "Ro-butts." "Guts-min" "Ice-min" The pronunciation made me cringe. I watched it all the way through and quite enjoyed it, but yeah, Roll's weird and I couldn't help but give an immature snicker whenever someone said "ro-butt".
-
It sounds really awesome and had me hooked for about the first 15 minutes, but then the excitement died for me. Some of my thoughts. 1) Contrary to what my wife thinks, there is a difference between Megaman and X. I found that Megaman was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too close to X. 2) Where do I know Edward Young (Dr. Light) from? I know I've seen him elsewhere. 3) Was the conversation between Dr. Light and Blues about repairing his power core taken from Power Battle 2? It seemed like it was Protoman's ending word for word. 4) Did they explain how Megaman got into Wily's castle? He wasn't able to teleport, so I figured they introduced Rush early. But then he was teleporting all around the castle like it was nothing. All in all, it was good. It felt really cliched but was really good overall.
-
Agreed
-
I liked it. I intended to watch just a couple of minutes to see how it looked, and before I knew it I'd made my wife watch the entire movie with me. The biggest thing for me was how close they stuck to the story. The (yellow) devil is always in the details when Hollywood tries to adapt a franchise like this (see green, speech impaired Captain N version of Mega Man). They were faithful to the source material, and that made me forgive some of the acting and special effects. I only have a couple of gripes. There should have been some minion characters for Mega Man to fight on the way to the Robot Master battles. They talked about Sniper Joes, but that was it. There wasn't even a single Met with their signature hard hats. There are a few long sequences of dialogue that start to drag. Particularly toward the end when they talk about Protoman's backstory. It didn't seem like a time for exposition when Gutsman was still out there wrecking the town. Had some of that been paired down, there could have been longer boss battles and maybe some smaller fights along the way. This was a great effort for a small fan project. I'd put it somewhere on the level of an episode of Power Rangers or Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future.
-
I agree. Not only did it exceed the low threshold of what I expect from video game movies, but the devotion to the source material and the effort put in make it shine. Imagine how this project would have looked with an actual budget. If typical Hollywood screenwriting and quality control (Michael Bay, I'm looking at you) keep being as unsatisfying as they have been, I imagine that the AV/Drama club productions of the future may gain a significant following.
-
pretty good IMO and im with ya too scooter roll is eerily attractive
-
Seconded
-
(SPOILER ALERT) I went into this thinking it couldn't possibly be as good as the trailer. I was right. IT WAS TEN TIME BETTER! Congrats all around to everyone involved. They even remembered to have Wiley come out of his ship and grovel at the end. Classic. (P.S. Please tell me I'm not the only one who found Roll eerily attractive)
-
Dr Wily's mustache is what really bugged me
-
Jesus Christ! Where would your 90 min self made movie be? Where is your great pieces of cinema, post or gtfo. As someone that's made a zero budget 60 min movie I can tell you it is HARD, it is a lot of work and time. You make me sick honestly. It's one thing to say "Meh not for me" but to go out of your way to be such a douche... pick the cheetos off your shirt and go play in traffic.
-
I have to say it lost me pretty early on, too. While I am impressed with the work and talent that went into it, it, I couldn't get into it. Two things REALLY bugged me: A) Is that a man in a wig playing the blond girl? and B) "Ro-butts." "Guts-min" "Ice-min" The pronunciation made me cringe.
-
I'm not done watching it but so far its way better than what I'm used to with videogame movies. if the production values were up by a few million I could definitely stand the acting and directing and I'd be perfectly satisfied.
-
im finding this guy and paying him for a ticket, this was fucking amazing~
-
Ahem... "Waaaaaaah!!! Waaaah!!! Waaaaaaaaah!!! Why isn't this fan film shot on a budget of twenty five cents and a stick of gum not up to the standards of Avatar when it comes to CGI!? Why do people like this!? Just because it respects the source material, pays extreme attention to the details that make the series what it is, and have real love and passion put into them? Bullshit!!! >:(" Lighten the fuck up, man, come on.
-
Yup, just spent 90 minutes watching this and not studying for finals. Totes worth it.
-
By far one of if not the best videogame based movie I've ever watched.
-
It never ceases to amaze me how much attention and praise these things get. This is by pretty much every definition awful, sub-SyFy Channel Original Movie-level dreck made by someone cheaply combining someone else's intellectual property and the basic visual tropes of every summer tentpole from the last decade together. There is literally nothing at all remotely creative about this. Really terrible acting, effects from the "I pirated Adobe After-Effects" school. The guy obviously didn't read even a single book about how to use a camera or even learn what "blocking a scene" is, for crap's sake. But he's a nerd and made it all by himself so let's give him a gold star and hang it up on the fridge!
-
That was fantastic, it was a good way to unwind after work. Wonder if there will be a DVD
-
No
-
Anyone else find it ironic he's released it on the same day as Iron Man 2?
-
I got into TR only recently, but when my roommate showed me the Mega Man trailer (along with a plethora of fan-made trailers that sucked out loud) my first thought was "Rob would love this!" Glad to see I was right, can't wait to watch the whole thing, gotta wait for my roommate to get back first.
-
Goddamnit, november 2008, I've been reading topless robot for almost 2 years now. Most of my relationships end up way earlier.
-
There should be a new topic on TR called "Epic Nerd Fail" Epic = The overall topic and theme of the project along with the nerds guts to actually attempt to tackle it despite the likely potential to fail. Nerd = The awesomeness of the project including attention to detail, overall faithfulness, and how other nerds react favorably to the project. Fail = The fact that the project although Epic and Nerdy really is not that good. I am just calling it how I see it. I would love for this to be incredible but its just not.
-
Not gonna lie, lost me in the first ten minutes. Just feels weird. I think a lot of these things are better as little trailers, because most of these concepts don't really work as movies (See Hollywood failures) but can be cut into a small trailers that look epic. But I also didn't care for the costume designs. Cutman is an elborate CGI effect, someone else is a guy in a motocross helmet. What? That all said, kudos to the guy who made it. Very well done to make a 90 minute movie. That girl/guy playing creeps me out. The Dr. Wily guy is cool. Kudos, but not my bag.
-
HECK YES! This is just--wow. SO IMPRESSIVE. Fan Films are usually just extended trailers...I'm speechless at this 90-minute accomplishment.
-
Goddamn! Goodbye, the next 90 minutes!
-
Eddie Lebron? FUCK YEAH!!! I remember that dude from the old GhostbustersHQ.com forums! A few years ago, he started work on a fanfilm called "Ghostbusters: Generations." The trailer and sample CGI work looked astounding, and since then, Ghostheads have been waiting eagerly for the movie. A few months back, Lebron stated the reason for the delay was another fanfilm. Glad to see he's been busy and back in action!
-
It's funny you should say they should turn to the fans more often. Because they did great with Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, which, aside from prgramming, was 100% fan-made.
-
Yay, I contributed for once! :D It's ninety minutes long, and it's fucking awesome. The little details are mind blowing. They even captured Ice Man's split personality. That's epic.
