Lots of people have built R2D2 but using it for charity purposes draws out legal issues, so of course he needed permission.
A Pink R2D2? Next stop-- Run for breast cancer!
No, seriously, think of the charity money that would be donated if people heard that friggin' R2D2 was in a Breast cancer run!
Can I indulge in some nerd-rage here? I hate ... hate people who write out R2D2 and C-3PO like they're names (ie, "Artoo-Deetoo" and "See-Threepio"). They're serial numbers, godammit, and nobody is helped by the alternate transliterative form.
Seeing the names transliterated like that makes me think of some smug-ass (I'm thinking English, as they are most consistently transliterated in the UK-released materials, making it even worse (I intrinsically loathe the English)) nerd making up some bullshit alien language, culture, etc, in which "Artoo" is a legitimate name, and not a transliteration of a serial number.
I want to punch this hypothetical (English) nerd repeatedly until he starts throwing up on himself. Then set him on fire. I hate it that much.

The city of Bangor is perhaps most well known. There is a thriving arts scene, with museums, galleries, theaters, a symphony orchestra and a popular sidewalk art festival every summer.
I hate stories like because they make me realize there are sooooo many people better than me. Kudos to this guy for doing what he can to bring a smile to the kids faces.
Bangor Maine is the hometown of Stephen King.
Obviously this is just a viral marketing gimmick for a Maximum Overdrive remake/sequel.
"He loves the reactions it gets from people"
That girl was completely creeped out at the time.
-sniff- i...i just...-cries- WAAAAAAH!! THIS IS TOO GODDAMN BEAUTIFUL!! -runs like a pansy-
You know.. It's funny.. I live in Southern Maine and I had not heard about this on our local news stations. I just find it very odd that it wasn't shown tonight in place of an article about catswholooklikehitler.com... Very weird...
I had the same thought watching this.
Not to put a damper on this, but he is a member of the R2 builders club and he is one of a few hundred people who have an R2 unit. There was no special permission given to him to be allowed to do this. Lucas just looks the other way when people like this and members of the 501st dress up. Its free positive promotion.
The Pink droid he is going to build is R2-KT named for Katie Johnson who died of Cancer a few years ago. You can look up all this stuff on the site or on the 501 site.
Still nice to see nerds get positive news
Nice to see geek powers being used for good and not evil.
This must be the first time in years that George Lucas has allowed joy to be spread in his name.
