Soul Calibur: The Next Class?

Namco officially announced that Soul Calibur V is coming in 2012. They also announced a few details, none of which are more intriguing than that the game is set 17 years after Soul Calibur IV — indeed, that’s Sophitia’s son Patroklos who shows up at the very end of the teaser trailer above.

Although Soul Calibur is my favorite fighting game (it’s not Tekken, as you may have gathered), I’m one of those awful people who find every Soul Calibur game worse than the last (the first was perfection, and they’ve just been needlessly fucking with the controls since). So I am equally trepidatious about SC5, but this time-jump makes me pretty excited. I assume the game will have to have a mostly new roster (Kotaku says Voldo and Nightmare still will be playable characters) although I assume they’ll mostly be children of the regular SC cast who take after their parents in both fighting style and ridiculously large breasts. Actually, the thing that makes me happiest and most hopeful is that game director Daishi Odashima wanted to name the game Soul Edge 2, as in a sequel to the very first game, before Soul Calibur. Namco said no, alas. But the idea alone makes my nerdy bits tingle.
