All right, that's cool. I stopped reading Penny Arcade a while ago when they started focusing more on their sidestories and less on dumb gaming humor, but I don't begrudge anyone who still enjoys 'em. Plus, they do great work in the nerd community with PAX and elsewhere with the wonderful Child's Play, so they certainly deserve whatever success comes their way. I'm not sure how a Penny Arcade movie would really go, but they've had a few animated versions, I think, and they had their Hothead game, so I guess it's not entirely without preced...After tasting success of its first non-DreamWorks Animation-produced animated film Rango, Paramount is jumping into the medium again with New Kid.
The project is an adaptation of an online comic from Penny Arcade. The studio has picked up rights and tapped Book of Eli writer Gary Whitta to pen the script. Mary Parent and Cale Boyter are producing via their studio-based Disruption Entertainment.
The premise spins the feeling of being a new kid in school into an intergalactic story when the kid happens to be the lone earthling in a school chock full of aliens.

A single strip? As in, a one page comic? A one-page web comic?
...
...
THAT'S FUCKING ABSURD. (Thanks to tredlow for the tip.)
More links from around the web!
-
And Galaxy High has a level of awesomeness that cannot be matched.
-
The movie will be epic if they have this one line, "WHY AM I SO BALD!"
-
My friend dropped these guys when they became the very thing they mocked. And when they became the latest advocates against the sale of used video games, that sealed the deal for me as well. ... FUCK 'EM.
-
You stink, Earthboy. Loved "GH". This project can suck it.
-
Oh, misread that. It was a single page strip to pitch a new comic idea. There is likely plenty planned.
-
It's probably based on the comic in general, ie, it'll probably be a wacky roommates/hillarity ensues show. Gabe and Tycho were portrayed as roommates for the majority of the comic and possibly still are, plus you have characters such as divx and fruitfucker (no doubt he'll be bowdlerised) that give executives enormous erections over the increased chance of wacky hijinks and merchandising.
-
I think I'll do one of the Bob and George where Bass and Nate merge together and say that you'll now call them Master. Yes, Master Bate. Yes, that is the punch line.
-
I would totally watch a galaxy high movie right about now.
-
I was hoping for one of those two as well. I think everyone was. What I'm crossing my fingers for the most is probably Rex Ready. Time-Travelling Secret Agent Dinosaur for Hire. I see Paint the Line below, which also would be a pretty swell choice.
-
Wait, wait - you are not SERIOUS about an Umbrella Academy film, are you?
-
Jeezus, Rob. Bitter much?
-
Isn't ludicrous brevity the very sine qua non of high concept in the first place? Six panels is actually overselling it. Easier to say "Sky High, except aliens instead of superheroes." Or, more plausibly, "close enough to Umbrella Academy that if that film's a hit we can ride its coattails without looking like a direct ripoff!" Or, utterly shamelessly: "HOGWARTS IN SPACE!"
-
Don't they mean "first non-DreamWorks Animation CGI animated film"?
-
Finally, a watchable D&D movie
-
For sure, The Hangover 2 was equally devoid of laughs so it would fit.
-
I liked this concept better when it was Galaxy High School.
-
Actually... it didn't. I glad I snuck in booze to the free screening I saw
-
Meh, why not Hollywood has had a lot worse in the last few years.
-
Why is this absurd? It's probably a smarter bet than, say, a comic-book property that isn't Superman, Batman, or Spider-Man (i.e., one that's immediately or even vaguely recognized by the general public). With only a single page, you simply have a solid story concept, completely free of the shackles of continuity and fanrage. As IP, there's no media behemoth or lawyer army to contend with, just two well-off creators and their pragmatic business manager. And the idea itself - the trials and tribulations of a kid in grade school, transplanted to space - is a springboard for a zillion kid-friendly and highly bankable story possibilities. Smart move, I say.
-
On the space station! Yes. Though, Tycho snogging a Russian spy as their ping-pong table spaceship combusts was pretty epic.
-
I could understand if it was something that people who read the comic liked - like, they liked it enough that they made several strips relating to the one idea (recent things I know of from them was a "fantasy Boy Scouts" thing and a pseudo-robot noir detective comic... thing.) Those would be more understandable. I almost think they made this one just to poke fun at a lot of those kid-friendly coming-of-age TV shows with a twist that apparently networks seem to love making despite them kinda being lowsy. If it was a movie based on one of those other things, cool. This? This sounds like Sky High in space or something, but less fun.
-
Cautiously Optimistic? -----follow the segway----> http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2006/3/1/
-
Ah hell, I forgot about Paint the Line. The final strip is glorious.
-
Oh how I wish that this heralded the return of Beef Bonk, but I doubt it. "IT STINKS!"
-
You know, when I take my nieces to see a movie, I'd much rather see something like this than what I saw last time, which was Gnomio and Juliet. I just hope they don't call the kid Sol, as in Sol system.
-
It could be worse. It could be "Penny Arcade Wolves: Turn Off the Dick."
-
For all the bitching, would you rather see Michael Bay's Tetris?
-
Lloyd in Space was a pretty good little show.
-
To be fair, that strip actually looks like it has promise for a good flick, depending on what genre they film it as. So I'm cautiously optimistic.
-
Damn, someone had to beat me to it didn't they? But seriously, I would love to see that disaster in animation form, if only so it could be annotated on youtube at a later date.
-
Hollywood: The land of new ideas
-
I guess its better than yet another useless and crappy remake of a decent movie.
-
Forget that, where's Song of the Sorcelator?
-
If the movie looks good, then based on this strip I would watch it. Most movies start out as a 2 min "elevator pitch" anyway. Half the time when I watch a movie I can hear some coked out Hollywood exec saying the pitch
-
I thought someone made an animated PA short or two, but I could be mistaken. However, I'm not mistaking the strip. I know many people love their Cardboard Tube Samurai and Catsby and all those other things, but I didn't. Again, I don't begrudge anyone who does.
-
hah, you need to be hired to do the promotion for this movie, because that's exactly the rationale behind it no doubt.
-
There's no way that Brendan Fraiser will not be in this.
-
I would watch the HELL out of this.
-
The presentation of this is gonna kill it if this is how it looks everywhere. they should call it in an idea they have been working on that has been shown in a comic (or several if that's the case) as apposed to adapting a comic.
-
Oh god, I can see it now. Rob and Dr. Abraxas in: "The Day the Whisky Died"
-
Sadly I think the cast would run more of Rob- Jack Black Dr A- Chris Mintz-Plazze and I'm sure some how I would end up getting played by Michael Cera because thats how karma works, just hope you don't get played by the Beef
-
Lloyd in Space. The weird thing there was that the token Black Guy wasn't black, he was as Ivey says, the token human. And also white. How meta is that? But that show was more a coming of age series set in space, this project is pretty much Galaxy High minus the 80's.
-
http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2011/5/9/ the idea in the second panel would make a great movie :D
-
The only way I can see this working is if Mike and Jerry had a ton more material they showed the producers and this is the only strip that got published. This is the only thing that can make this studio decision not retarded.
-
The company that brought us Rango is bringing us an animated film based on some Penny Arcade strips?! With some writers of decent cred? Cool. Oh. Not the actual Penny Arcade strips. Who is it? Fruitfu.. oh wait.. no. Cardboard Tube Samurai?! AWESOME! That wou.. oh.. it's not? Well, then.. Twisp and Catspy? That would.. The New Kid? Who the fuck is the new kid? One strip? Wat. Wow. Hollywood is retarded beyond belief.
-
"It's Clerks, but in a toy store." There. I wrote the pitch for you.
-
In the news section for that comic, Gabe, the artist, says this: "My fantasy is to see Dreamworks, Disney or Nickelodeon make an animated feature or a Saturday morning cartoon out of this one. Who knows maybe they will see it and give me a call!" So he was hoping it might be picked up after the fans voted on the cartoon. Basing a movie off a single strip might be retarded, but if Gabe had been hoping it would be picked up, I would guess Gabe and Mike have some sort of outline for what kind of story they would like to see.
-
*Raises hand* Actually they did a series of concept strips for things just like this. Just a one off to introduce a story idea to see how people reacted to them as they had a few ideas for side projects.
-
Many comic strips have went on to be animated series, and even feature films, so why not an online comic strip?
-
"I stopped reading Penny Arcade a while ago when they started focusing more on their sidestories and less on dumb gaming humor" Side stories? what side stories? Aside from comics like Automata, Lookouts etc. which are kind of outside the usual 'Penny Arcade' strips. It's still pretty much dumb gaming humor and commentary. "I'm not sure how a Penny Arcade movie would really go, but they've had a few animated versions, I think,..." No, they don't have that either. Are you sure you're not confusing Penny Arcade with Scott Kurtz's PvP? Because THAT webcomic had an animated version and also focuses more on side stories rather than gaming humor.
-
Bring on Shortpacked the Movie!
-
My understanding (based on Twitter, FWIW) is that there is more material than just the comic that this movie will be based on. Having said that... Yeah. Not sure if the original concept will hold up. I also haven't seen anything on how much creative control the PA guys will have-- I'm guessing not a lot.
-
I say, the less they have to go on, the less they can mess up. That's much better than a studio taking an established story with tons of characters and plot points and throwing them all out the window.
-
I call Peter Dinklage. Not that I'm a dwarf, but he's way more awesome than I am. So I would become awesome by association. Also, this was meant to be a reply to Dr. Smashy, but I did the internet wrong because I'm not awesome.
-
I demand to be played by JON HAMM!
-
We had a TR Nerd Movie Casting Call Contest a while ago, and I think the winning entry was an awesome Penny Arcade cast including Conan O Brien as the voice of Fruit Fucker. Consequently this movie, and probably any future PA movies, pales in comparison.
-
MUHAHAHAHA!
-
Nope. No. Nononononono. Sorry, I like TR, but a TR movie would be a gateway towards FFF movies. Sorry, but infinity no.
-
I love Penny Arcade and all its various offshoots and affiliations. So happy to hear this, though as others have mentioned I would have preferred something for Automata or the Lookouts. Rob, just look at it this way (booze will help you get in the right frame of mind): maybe this is the first step towards a Topless Robot movie. Just imagine what that would be about...
-
Indeed. It's one of the weaker, more conventional ideas of theirs. Which is probably exactly why Hollywood picked it up.
-
In a world where Shatner starred in a show based on a fucking Twitter account, this is not so weird.
-
I have similar feelings. I like Penny Arcade and the guys behind it but a movie based on a one-off strip like that seems odd and as far as I can tell Tycho and Gabe won't be involved in it's production. Now if I'm wrong about that last bit this could be a lot of fun, but the idea itself doesn't have much behind it.
-
Never mind that Disney cartoon that took place in a space station where there's a bunch of aliens at school. The human wasn't the main character, but there WAS a token human.
-
I saw the article, I saw the page image, and I was sure that it would be Paint the Line. In comparison, this is mundane. http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2008/6/25/
-
Good point. Although since Hollywood's involved, I expect a cliched story starring some downside-of-his-career actor as the dad and an annoying kid in your generic family comedy. Whether they go the Disney family-friendly route or the less family-friendly Adam Sandler route? Heck if I know.
-
Oh, it is absurd. VERY absurd. Why can't we get an Automata or Lookouts adaptation instead? Those are some sidestories of theirs they've actually put thought into and done worldbuilding for. ....then again, I think now we know why we're not getting those as adaptations. Because Hollywood would ruin them for everybody. Still, as absurd as this is, if a studio was actually willing to throw money at them for the rights to do a movie out of A SINGLE STRIP, all power to them.
-
I want an Automata movie :(
-
Exactly, it's more like a pitch than anything else. Less a movie based on a strip than a strip showcasing an idea for a story.
-
But what about Jim Darkmagic?!?
-
My thoughts exactly
-
I dunno, Rob. With just that one panel, I'm suddenly excited about the prospect. While the strip is not funny in the slightest (kinda sad, even), it does show potential to be really, really cool! I mean, it's almost as if Penny Arcade was putting that one single strip out as bait for animation studios out there to pick it up and run with it. And if that was really the case, I can only say this: well played, sirs! Well played indeed! XD
-
It does sound absurd, but then again, it does sound like a story with potential. Hell, I can name a few quick animated shorts I wouldn't mind seeing as full films. I just hope they end up using the same art style as well.
-
They'll adapt that to be the script for The Hangover: Part 3.
-
Thank You. I wonder how much they are going to pay TMS Entertainment for this?
-
I hope we get an animated film based on CTRL ALT DLTs infamous Miscarriage comic
-
New Kid wasn't even the comic they chose to make a full mini-series from that bunch as I recall. Shit, I'm all about this, though. If they treat it with intelligence and - fuck it, who am I kidding? This is going to be asinine. Oh well. Congrats to the PA guys, though - hopefully they see a little money from this.
-
figured it was only a matter of time before holly wood would move on to the web comic world to mine which means the studio since the source material is one page long will be adding stuff to fill out the movie.
-
It's not so much a single strip, but one of the various story ideas they created for fans to vote on. So there's probably a lot more than that single strip, that we haven't seen, and the idea has potential.
-
"the kid happens to be the lone earthling in a school chock full of aliens" It's fucking Galaxy High!
-
I've been a big fan of Penny Arcade for years, and their little one-off story arcs are some of my favorites, like New Kid. I have no doubt that those gents have a absolute mass of plot ideas that go alone with these stories that they let us peak at. For me, this is exciting. I hope this goes well for them. Jerry and Mike seem like really good guys and this could open a really interesting door way into the fame of web comics.
-
Penny Arcade still does a majority of their comics on gaming, and it is still one of the funniest comics out there. While a Gabe/Tycho movie would be better then New Kid has a lot of room to grow and could be good
