"Part of me thinks that Family Guy should have already ended. I think seven seasons is about the right lifespan for a TV series," he says of a show that launched its tenth season last month. [...] MacFarlane is particularly eager to reboot one of his favorite franchises, Star Trek, for TV. "I don't know who would give me the keys to that car," he jokes, acknowledging that the films have been so profitable for Paramount that he isn't so sure they have a lot of interest in getting back into the TV business. "But I'd love to see that franchise revived for television in the way that it was in the 1990s: very thoughtful, smartly written stories that transcend the science fiction audience."I barely know what to say. I mean, you hear the creator of Family Guy wants to make a Trek show, you immediately imagine disaster on par with Bayformers. But when he says he wants to essentially make it like Deep Space 9? And he also thinks Family Guy should end? I don't know if he's the man for the job, but the man has two very good ideas. I... I think I need to lie down for a little bit. Just gonna try and process this.

This is really something! We all know that Seth MacFarlane is a BIG fan of Star Trek, but let's not let Family Guy end this way. There are millions of people across the globe eagerly waiting to watch a new episode of that show every week! This man often cracks good jokes. Let's hope he's just joking with this one, lol... Somebody call Stewie!
-
I really believe he can do the Star Trek series. After the pilot he probably won't even WRITE it anymore. If he doesn't WRITE it, he'll be good. And with him acting a bit on TNG, he's got contact with that cast What worries me is his Cosmos sequel. A sequel to a 20 year old documentary by Carl Sagan to air on fox isn't a good idea.
-
Well, he DID act for a bit on TNG (hence how he got the whole cast to guest on family guy). I think the time has come to end it. And to be honest, when he wants to be, he's a very intelligent man. What worries me is him making a Cosmos sequel. Carl Sagan was an atheist philosopher! I don't think fox will take that well
-
""Part of me thinks that Family Guy should have already ended." ... I liked it for a time, but I REALLY AGREE with that part of you...
-
Can't be worse than Voyager or Enterprise.
-
As long as Ron Moore stays away from the franchise, they can get Dane Cook to do it, for all I care. It is true that Seth MacFarlane is a huge Trek fan, though, so ... there may be something there.
-
Seth was fairly good as the gaseous German scientist in "Hellboy 2".
-
Another "American Dad" fan here. AD is consistently clever, well-voiced and well-animated, with characters you actually care about-it's up there with "Futurama" and "Archer" as one of the best animated comedies currently being made.
-
Discord made me a Brony. And to think I despised MLP.
-
Well I see a lot of hate here, but the fact is, this is an interesting idea. If only to ponder what the world would be like without Family Guy on and Star Trek back on. As for the argument that he'd somehow ruin it with his writing style, keep in mind he wouldn't be working alone on it. Star Trek has also always had an open door policy to accepting fan scripts, and I have little to no doubt Seth wouldn't change that policy. It'd just be an interesting world to imagine, though I doubt it will happen at all...
-
hmm seems some limit is met can't respond below...yes I am quite aware of the whose responsible this.
-
If you think that Red State was a commentary on Middle America, then either you've never been to Middle America or you didn't watch that movie.
-
we responsible this many bothans were sent to the raperack for giving us the brickhouse bunny grammar
-
no, "whose responsible this" was something that came out of FFF after an irate author learned about TR.
-
The voters maybe?
-
whose responsible this
-
Only one? There has to be at least 3 if its the govt.
-
I'm almost certain that there's a special government watch list for every person who has ever clicked on an FFF article. We are responsible this.
-
Last I checked nothing good could be related to FFF. Jeez I almost typed nothing good ever came from FFF.
-
Depends on whether it relates to FFF or not.
-
Is that to be considered good or bad, or just to be considered?
-
But everyone here can relate to it!
-
err Palm Pre. err I guess you just can't make that sound good.
-
Ill or I'll? My old palm would never let me be ill.
-
Wait, but have you seen his Shatner impression? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txjjhSAhe_0 Clear a fan. I'd give it a fair chance.
-
My iPhone's autocorrect is very strange to me sometimes.
-
I know where to get an alligator. Can you get your hand a car?
-
I can already imagine how this is going to turn out: a character makes a throwaway joke about how cold Klingon vaginas are, and we got to see it in the next scene. In loving details, too. -shudder- FUCK. YOU. Seth McFarlane! Just when I thought you had redeemed yourselves by making American Dad to apologize for Family Guy, you had to turn around and be all extra dickish, hadn't you? Keep your filthy, juvenile, one-trick-pony mitts off of Star Trek. Ass.
-
"Part of me thinks that Family Guy should have already ended" WELL NO SHIT CAPTAIN
-
I joined the herd to see Dr.Whooves...I stayed for the cupcakes.
-
I'm not sure he's the person to do it. I am sure he's one of the few people that Paramount might give the chance to.
-
funny that, i was reading you post right up to the besides when all of sudden i cut away to my stash of sam/bee pr0n. and i lingered there perhaps a little too long.
-
take the cupcake
-
join the herd... We have free cupcakes! or muffins if that's your kind of thing...
-
I never would have thought...
-
irrationally bitching about xyz on TOPLESS ROBOT????
-
What evidence do you two have that MacFarlane "barely ever writes" for AD or that the unfunniest parts of FG are a result of the bits of the scripts he writes? I'm assuming you have such evidence, or we'd be forced to conclude that you're just irrationally bitching about him because you don't like him.
-
The man didn't even have any Bat-nipples!
-
I assumed he meant the end of TNG. DS9 and Voyager both started with decent premises but went way off the reservation in ways that didn't really feel all that 'trek-y'
-
Maybe he should concentrate on the 4th show he just added (the unfortunate Flintstones) before already putting the 5th one on his plate.
-
He has the type of face that begs to have a shovel smashed into it repeatedly.
-
McFarlane couldn't even pull off the Star Trek:TNG episode OF HIS OWN SHOW without slamming it to the sideboards to operate around the main story of AnnoyingBrian and MegNoOneLikes fighting about religion for an interminable amount of time. That episode was advertised like mad for the Star Trek content and we got stuck with atheism vs. fundamentalism. Ho ho! Fun-ny! (So very much not.) To his slight credit, the TNG bits were funnier than every other episode he put out that year, but that's not to his credit. I'm not looking forward to a Hee-Haw cutaway in on the USS Enterprise.
-
I've long said this. You can see his fingerprints all over FG at its unfunniest. And AD is benefitting from his absence with 1000% funnier shows.
-
That dude is starting to scare me. Bishop?
-
Comparing American Dad to Family Guy is pretty insulting. MacFarlane barely ever writes for AD which is why it is actually quite enjoyable.
-
Maybe he can bring his Family Guy magic to Star Trek? As in, when the show is on the verge of being cancelled, a slew of fans will rise up with their internet petitions and Facebook pages to save it. Though in the case of Family Guy, I'd say it should have been left for dead, but the viewing numbers and how often I hear people say, "like this one part in Family Guy...", reveals there was a big enough audience somehow.
-
keton's package was too small, no?
-
So he doesn't even deserve a chance to try something more serious? I'm not saying give him a Trek series immediately, but let's see if he can actually pull off serious dramatics before completely writing him off here, people.
-
I was actually really surprised, reading the full interview, at how down to earth he came across. I mean it's probably just partly an act, but he really seemed aware of the problems with FG and seems to have a lot of interesting ideas. He's also helping work on the reboot of Carl Sagan's Cosmos, which will be hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson. Should be pretty interesting to see how that turns out.
-
And in this fan's opinion, he COULDN'T make a decent Batman movie! But that's a story for another day.
-
No, I actually agree with you. Old Family Guy is just.... weird. It's a totally different show. Although I did like their William Shatner, who struck a different pose with each syllable he spoke.
-
oh, how I miss the days of BBC Simpsons...
-
Back off Peter Brady people.......he's just trying to find another cash cow to milk into oblivion
-
I have serious doubts about Seth MacFarlane's ability to make a good Star Trek show (although if it would mean the cancellation of Family Guy, and hopefully American Dad and The Cleveland Show as well), then I'd be willing to try it. He can hardly do any more damage to the franchise than JJ Abrams already has.
-
The Zucker brothers have never wrote anything serious either, that doesn't mean I want them to direct a sequel to Aliens. Some writers are only good at writing one kind of thing, usually if they stray too far from that thing it sucks. Take that new Kevin Smith film Red State for example, it's a horror movie that is a commentary on Middle America, it is also a piece of shit movie.
-
That's a basic sitcom set-up, man. Where have you been? Besides, we're talking about the actual show here. The structure and storytelling is done differently. The most glaring change is the absence of Family Guy's trademark cut-away gags.
-
Jesus Christ MacFarlane! Aren't you also trying to reboot The Flinstones too? Man, take the ambitions a day at a time.
-
The banter is much more linear on American Dad and every time I see Klaus I can't help but to think of Werner Herzog.
-
Indeed! I wouldn't say I "Love" FG, but it's occasionally great, and even at its lowest there are worse ways to kill 30 minutes, but I have a lot of respect for MacFarlane: He's capable of much more (as American Dad proves) and I'm not at all surprised that he's starting to phone-in Family Guy. At the very least, a Star Trek series developed by him would be something new and different. Remember: No one thought the guy who directed Pee-Wee's Big Adventure could possibly make a decent Batman movie, either ;)
-
I don't know why this terrifies me, but it does.
-
You and I should talk sometime ;)
-
Honestly, I'd watch the SHIT out of an ST show like this! XD
-
Not necessarily on Slater, as he isn't a writer by trade, has not come out and said he was a huge fan, doesn't have an idea for a series etc. At least MacFarlane has some love for the series and would try to make a good show. You got further in on FG then I did. I also get the Arguing to Argue, boredom will do that.
-
I've seen the first 5 seasons and if you can't see that the only character that is at all different than their counterpart on FG is Steve vs Chris you're delusional. 1. Crazy wife with emotional mood swings? Check. 2. Incompetent father who hates his daughter? Check. 3. Side character that ends up being the focus of the show? Check (Stewie/Roger) 4. Frumpy daughter who no one really likes and is the focus of most of the hate/joking? Check So in essence the Cleveland show is a clone of a clone.
-
Really Smashy? It might be a GENERATION-al thing (PUNS!), but I remember when the BBC used to air Star Trek: The Next Generation right after The Simpsons, 7:00pm regular on weekdays. They even showed Buffy eps right afterwards! Of course this was back in the mythical era when The Simpsons was still funny and the Beeb still had the rights to air it, so there you go. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is worth a look if you thought Trek could use more moral ambiguity (like ripping of Babylon 5 OH I WENT THERE!), but Star Trek: The Next Generation is simply television history. Some of the best work of Patrick Stewart's career, and some of the best sci-fi of the 90's. Not to mention you can watch the majority of either series for free on Youtube...
-
Wow--Am I the only one who thinks FG sucked balls BEFORE the cancellation, and only got watchable AFTER they brought it back? XD
-
"Sometimes cancelled is better"
-
You're more of a slightly more mature, definitely more perverted Trelane, Brax ;)
-
By your definition than Christian Slater should write the next Trek Series because he had a part in "The Undiscovered Country". Because, well he was in it! Also I'm just arguing to argue. I actually enjoyed FG Seasons 1-4.5 and American Dad is watchable.. sometimes.
-
"Smarmy" is kinda his thingXD
-
NNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
-
Seconded! MacFarlane does Family Guy to make money--so he can do things of worth like American Dad and The Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy (look for it--it's on DVD, don't know abou Netflix) And as much as everyone hates on FG (and they have good reason to), they DO sneak in a thoughtful and interesting story now and again.
-
He's a talented voice actor, but he just has the MOST. PUNCHABLE. FACE. I've ever seen.
-
But have you ever seen him get the chance to write something serious? Let's not put the carriage before the horse here.
-
Oh please, he just wants to put his friend Patrick Stewart back to work. I see right through you McFarlane.
-
I've loved Family Guy for many years. When it was first released, it was the first TV on DVD set that I purchased. I've bought every set since then, and I've listened to every director commentary that was recorded. You can actually hear Seth getting more and more disenfranchised as the years (and projects) continue. I truly believe that he feels the show should have ended by now, but because of the studio, he "has to" continue. The FG Empire Strikes Back parody totally sucked, and in the commentary, Seth is very clear that he only planned on doing the first parody. Because it was so successful, Fox "made him" do the others and they didn't know what to do (hence the drop in quality). I think that he is much smarter than his shows portray at this point.
-
If you think American Dad is a clone of Family Guy, then you have never watched it. It's The Cleveland Show that is the clone.
-
End 'Family Guy' - Fuck yes! McFarlane make a new 'Star Trek' - Fuck no!
-
Allow me. "Fuck Seth McFarlane in his his no-talented ass with a syphillis infected horse cock!"
-
Can you imagine what would show up on the main screen? It would be like MST3K without the wit or humor. And you know MacFarlane would wedge way too much singing into it.
-
I...will...resist...becoming...a...Bronie. Though info like this is making it more difficult.
-
American Dad is the far superior show, so I know MacFarlane has talent.
-
I don't care what anyone says, I still love Family Guy. Seth pays so much attention to detail that I think he could do a pretty good job with something like Star Trek.
-
He has done other things and that is my point. but lets expand on that, how about the fact that he was an actor on Star Trek Enterprise, or started out writing for Disney shows. You are dismissing him on Family Guy, so personal bias rather then facts.
-
Funny, I just watched DS9's Sacrifice of Angels last night and I couldn't help but think that the scene where the Federation Fleet meets the Dominion's needed a cut-away.
-
I used to hate American Dad (assuming that it was just a FG clone). When the dvd sets went on sale on Black Friday, I picked them up. I really like it now. The writing is much smarter than Family Guy in a bit of a Colbert Report way. It doesn't just rely on easy, long winded jokes. Half of the FG jokes are just playing already-existing video clips. That's just lazy writing. And no, I'm not saying American Dad is as good as The Colbert Report.
-
It can't be any worse than Voyager.
-
That's true, his overall vision and commitment that is more important if he is in charge.
-
When he says the 90s I wonder if he is referring to next generation or ds9 or both. TNG started in 87 but ran to 94. and ds9 started in 93, so it could be either or both.
-
Keep in mind he'd likely have a very different writing staff. You know, people who don't write comedy but write science fiction. It wouldn't be hard to recruit those people to the franchise, either. I mean, Star Trek.
-
I think he can be a funny guy myself. I used to like family guy a lot, now it's getting kinda hit or miss. I don't think it's the worst thing that could happen to star trek. as long as he remembers he's not doing a parody I think it'd be fine. Of course, I don't think it will happen anyways. speaking of which, if this is a no-go family guy could always do what they did to star wars.
-
John DeLancie played a character who's basically the same as Q (has ultimate powers, dicks around with the world for his own amusement)
-
His show is extremely hit or miss, and every time Broan in THE MOUTHPIECE it goes badly, but Seth MacFarlane always struck me as an interesting, intelligent person. I'd love to have lunch with him and just shoot the shit for a while. And I'n religious, so that would probably be like driving my hand into an alligator's mouth.
-
And Lucas created the original Star Wars but later released garbage better known as the prequels what's your point? Also all the shows you mentioned are animated, quirky odd-ball shows. Not really a big reach for him. That's like having Ridley Scott want to reboot Growing Pains.
-
Sometimes,sometimes not...
-
Who knows he might even find a way to weave Blood and Fire into a Trek reboot.
-
Yeah people seem to forget about how he was a writer for Dexter's Laboratory, Cow and Chicken, I Am Weasel, and Johnny Bravo.
-
Yes, he was an actor, not a writer... there is a dramatic difference.
-
You mean <b>Po<i>r</i>n Farr</b> of course.
-
Yeah I remember that and Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine appearing on Voyager too.
