Can I suggest this also as a steampunk Video of note http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mLwfPPofbs
-
Yeah, well, join the party: I've been bitching about you people calling the vampire/crow/harlequin fads "goth" when goth died in 1989. Like me, you're stuck with it. Enjoy watching your subculture being turned out like a cheap whore by all the new kids who don't know what the hell they're talking about.
-
Wow I've now lost all interest in Steampunk.
-
Just saying "Justin Bieber did it now its ruined is pretty damn hipster." the gear shirts I will admit are fairly crappy and subsequently fit with this song, but the gloves seem to be fairly consistant
-
wait are you judging the ability for the movie to hold your attention through watching 30 seconds of it?
-
Steampunk's answer to Voltaire.
-
Don't worry, friend. Just join one of the many, many other punk groups. I myself am a proponent of Atompunk and I'd have it no other way.
-
You shouldn't stop enjoying something just because someone emulated it. It just makes you seem a slave to hipster fashion ideals and anti-pop culture. Enjoy what you enjoy because you enjoy it.
-
I went to Ohayocon last year and it was Steampunk themed (2010). Part of what I sincerely enjoyed about it was the wide range of interpretations people took and many of the discussion panels lead interesting talks on what could be considered steampunk. What it came down to is whatever your imagination can make it. Maybe it's not as simply as gluing gears onto something, but neither is it so high and mighty as to proclaim itself better than the sum of it's parts. What I'm trying to say is that regardless, we all started out gluing gears to something. BTW I also went to a Lolita Fashion workshop and was quickly irritated by how exacting and judgmental the workshop leaders were as to what constituted Lolita fashions. Lady had a Hello Kitty vibrator shoved up her tightly laced ass.

Your feng shui is good, oh my brother.
-
That joke used to be funny then everyone and their mom got a hold of it.
-
Heavens to Betsy, it'll end up on Regretsy! Oh dear god I fucking LVOE this :D
-
This reminds me of my favorite Kate Beaton strip: http://harkavagrant.com/index.php?id=266
-
Replace ebay with etsy and you've got a perfect song!
-
Hmmm, shouldn't it be called Solar-Oil-Water-Wind Punk instead? It is a mouthful, but it kinda has a mythical "Chinese Four Elements" vibe.
-
What about those Sherlock Holmes movies? Sherlock Series 2 is premiering in 2012, and when not even RDJ can hold your attention, you know there's something fundamentally wrong with your movie.
-
Yes, yes it is.
-
I'd like to think this whole song & video was a response to another recent music video that may very well be steampunk's low point.
-
Isn't that just real life?
-
Well she is sleeping with Neil Gaiman........ba-dum-dum
-
How about those Sherlock Holmes movies??
-
I prefer Dieselpunk it's much more mature and gritty for most people. /sneer
-
Just glue a laser on it, and call it Cyyyyyyberpunk............
-
also.... Amanda Palmer must be rolling over in her grave. The ten seconds I saw was like a bad Hollywood take on a 2003 Dresden Dolls video. and, yes, I know.Palmer is not dead. I just asume she is quirky enough to sleep in graves.
-
I went to go shower. I went to twirl my handlebar, which I hadn't twirled and turned up with paste in a while. I came back anf saw this Bieber video. Saw ten seconds of it. Closed it in rage. I went back into the bathroom and turned my handlebars down again in shame. I am resiting the urse to take scissors to it. I was thinking about going to a local steampunk diner with friends wearing it. Now.... ugh..
-
Aaaaaah. Gotcha. Cute.
-
don't we all? :)
-
I used to hang dwarven gears off my armor and call it steampunk. (Until I got an arrow in my knee.)
-
Cyberpunk is the Steampunk of the Future... where, strangely enough, there are no actual Punks
-
I know! I really just wanted an excuse to use the expression "science fiction sub-genera" in a post... ;-D
-
"See, Penny's giving it up, she's giving it up hard. Cause she's with Captain Hammer. And these..." *Holds up fist* "... are not the hammer." *Walks away* *Comes back* "The hammer is my penis...."
-
I kinda just wish steampunk would die.
-
You win this thread. Well done, sir. Well done. http://i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l620/frusengladje/clapping.gif
-
It's only cyberpunk because it's futuristic to us.........In the time of Star Trek, all those tubes and shit are definately antiques.........and remember kids, it ain't steampunk unless it's ruining a good antique. :-)
-
I think a couple of years ago TR had posted a steapunk Star Trek fan vid done as a silent film
-
-_____- Are you trolling or just stupid? The Borg are very very very cyberpunk.
-
WHAT?! -Google Fu- http://gawker.com/5865597/justin-bieber-ruins-entire-nerd-subculture-with-new-christmas-video THAT IS IT! You are dead to me, Steampunk! I HAVE NO SUB GENRE! holy hell, that is painful
-
Star Trek Steampunk? Excuse me while I glue some gears onto a starfleet insignia.
-
The Borg = Star Trek Steampunk
-
Challenge accepted, though I had to go from the other pov: All the steampunk ladies, all the steampunk ladies All the steampunk ladies, all the steampunk ladies Now put your crafts up Up on eBay, need cash my way I'm doing my own little thing I can't make a sale, my store is a fail Cuz nobody wants to buy from me. Attach some gears, distressed by years I'm gettin' all the attention My steampunked crap drops cash in my lap Ya can't be mad at me If it's steampunk then you better glue some gears on it If it's steampunk then you better glue some gears on it Don't be mad once you see that he want it If it's steampunk then you better glue some gears on it Woah oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
-
I'd add Girl Genius to that list. (It features airships, but I don't think they're steam powered.)
-
the problem isn't that people are making these things, but they are calling them something they are not. if someone glues some gears on a keyboard and doesn't call it steampunk (or maybe evene calls it steampunk inspired or something) I think most people into that sort of thing wouldn't care.
-
That was damned entertaining. Personally I prefer the iron stylings of Harper Goff over the copper do-dadery that permeates the Steampunk design genre.
-
usually when I hear of something awful, I have to see it anyways. but I don't want it to ruin steampunk for me, so I think I'll actually leave this alone and hope I never happen to see it.
-
Cyberpunk as an aesthetic style is considered SOOOOO late 80's to early 90's. It died out as a cultural movement with Virtual Reality and William Gibson's writing career. And like you say modern life is quickly rendering the concept obsolete. Steampunk still enjoys some perverse "ironic" appeal to nerdy hipsters, cosplayers dressed as a Stemapunk version of something already famous, and bizarre fetishists of the pseudo-Victorian. As far as I'm concerned Steampunk in popular culture should be limited to The Adventures of Luther Arkwright, Steamboy and the Wild Wild West movie. That was more than enough. Can we please dispense with the steam powered airships, ladies and gentelmen?
-
Because obscure science fiction sub-genera accuracy in fashion trend-oriented home-made designing is such an importante issue... (snarkiness aside, that was excellent)
-
He's warming you up for something horrible later. Remember, that nice glowing feel is only bringing him closer to breaching the dimensional barriers. Soon He will be here, and your soul will be crushed. Usually on Friday afternoons around 2 or 3 EST.
-
Is this in response to Justin Bieber's inexplicable steampunk christmas video?
-
From the way it's phrased, I was expected more of parody using Single Ladies as a template. I'm not sure if I'm disappointed this isn't the case or not.
-
* a roommate's brass looking -heatsink- I meant to say Also... is cyberpunk so far out of trendiness and overuse that it's cool and fun again? Or has our actual world just because a cyberpunk utopian nightmare? That Phillip K Dick special on the Science channel has me worried about that.
-
Oh dear heavens yes! I'm a grammar Nazi -esque stickler when it comes to terminology, be them science or English terms. I haaaaaaate when people toss on any goggles and then some gears and call it steampunk. I hate when people call stuff from the 1920s, 30s, and beyond Steampunk. Hell, people call the first Bioshock steampunk! What?! It's in the late 50s and has leftover art deco! And if you have gears, make them look functional. Then again I took a roommate's brass looking and stuck it on a pirate gun for a quick and sloppy steampunk Lupin outfit I am not too proud of. Another gun I went with a weird crystal look. Then again I tossed those quickly together for a party. Screw this shit.. I'm hoping on diesel punk before that becomes too popular and people ruin it.
-
Why yes, it would seem to be so... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5Q26z-Sc7c&feature=related
-
I get a warm fuzzy feeling any time I suggest a video to Rob and it gets posted. .... Is this what being even marginally important feels like?
-
I'd recommend some Professor Elemental too.
-
Simples... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6t28COxEp2k
-
What is this? I demand mental sustenance!
-
Best rap song ever. Also I demand an album.
-
Well, it IS called Rub and Buff.... Guess he got carried away?
-
This IS one of my recent peeves. Just gears on a skirt? How is THAT Steampunk? The gears don't even turn! ARG! Except earrings - there you can use JUST gears and they look neat. One lady I know made earrings from fancy hinges - they work and they're blingy and shiny! One more recent ...devolution? is Nerfpunk! 19th century-ish fashions done up in day-glo Nerf colors! Nerf guns without Rub-N-Buff metal on them! Whee!
-
I dunno, this video is pretty good, but the Smosh Legend of Zelda rap is still the best nerdy music video I've seen within the past month. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mO1QBTG6EXs
-
Chap Hop inspired perhaps?
-
Even when the singing is nothing to talk about it, the song has some charm, it's very catchy. I liked very much the ecos (just glue some gears and call it steampunk....), I don't know it got clued in the mind and the voice is incredible appropiate. Hope the guy do another video someday.
-
Bravo! Was Abraxis born in the e80's? Cause Im picturing him copper painting his junk to sell on ebay. And by junk I mean his hammer. and by hammer I mean his penis.
-
IT's always nice to see my complaint distilled into song.
