Three things I learned about the intensely awaited (by some) Berserk anime movie from this six-minute preview:
1) It's cel-shaded CG, although it look pretty good
2) There's some kind of egg in it (in fact, the movie's title is Egg of the Supreme Ruler)
3) It doesn't seem to be particularly bloody.
The last one strikes me as the most weird, as if there was one thing I thought I knew about Berserk, is that's it's really violent. Which means at this point I know nothing about Berserk. Happily, that's never stopped me from posting on a subject before. (Via Twitch)

...That's actually a good summary of the Golden Age arc. You're going to enjoy the ending, that's all I'm gonna say.
-
Nah, he's to busy playing idol-raising simulation video games and trolling niconico, so give it until he runs out of money in let's say 90 years.
-
That's a dude (Griffith), but yeah, I thought that when I first saw Phantom of the Paradise last year. You never know, although there was rather a long period in between that film and when he first wrote the manga.
-
Sorry I wasn't clear enough, I WAS referring to the original manga. I'm ambivalent about this movie trilogy, but the manga is an all time masterpiece. IF ONLY THE AUTHOR DECIDED TO FINISH IT IN LESS THAN 40 YEARS.
-
The same can be said of real life.
-
First lesson of anime...if a character looks like a mature beautiful woman, 9 times out of 10 it's a dude.
-
Fucking epic manga. The anime series was a failure for me.
-
Am I alone in spotting that the girl's helmet at 1:08 looks a lot like the Phantom of the Paradise? http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZvtL6wkPGdQ/TmAIDal37QI/AAAAAAAAANg/aWSXYznR30U/s1600/Phantom-of-Paradise-Swan-Leach.jpg Geek points please!

This looks to be a timeless tale of young love; a rough-and-tumble, uncouth rogue learns how to be a civilized man with the help of his gorgeous bishounen emperor. Basically, "My Fair Lady" with swords and homoeroticism.
-
You should be. Everything needs more killer walls. I'd settle for a Gelatinous Cube though.
-
"It is one of the greatest works of fantasy of all time." Doubtful. Especially when most of the comments have informed me it is neither violent nor rapey enough for fans of the original Manga and that I must wait until the second movie for it to get good.
-
"But if you dislike it solely because it's not what you expected it to be, well, perhaps you should reconsider how you approach entertainment" Hi, welcome to Topless Robot. You must be new around here. Again: nerds on nerd site missed nerdy joke. Wow you Anime fans really got but-hurt over this.
-
Of corse my Internets craps out on me when this goes up. Can't wait to see this. If they want it to follow the Manga more closely they should still have him square off against the Snake Baron and then the Count before the "Golden Age" Flash back starts. Also they avoided a lot of the more gruesome things that happen to Guts and other childern in the Manga in the original Anime series witch for being based Manga fell abit short... ("Berserk" without the Skull Knight, no Viald or Puck...) Also anyone who even remotely likes Fantasy (and doesn't have problems with Gorn, Rape and decent people suffering horrible fates) needs to read the Manga it's ridiculously good.
-
Best case scenario: Casca regains her memories of before the Eclipse, and traumatised by everything that's happened to her, she abandons Guts and his quest for vengenance. Guts goes off the deep end. It gets worse. Worse case scenario: Casca remembers EVERYTHING that's happened to her, before AND after the Eclipse. Can no longer bear to be around Guts, hates him for what he's become. Guts gives in to the Beast, and things go real bad real fast.
-
BWAHAHHAAAA!!!! Congratulations good sir, that comment made my week! It's funny because it's true, it HURTS because it's oh so true.
-
This is Berserk, I can't recall anything really turning out "well". Heck TV tropes calls it "It Got Worse: The Series". You thinking the kid may be the unborn of G/C while also being F(G)?
-
There seems to be some confusion about the original series. It excluded some aspects that seemed minor but are actually kinda important to the ongoing story. It was also some time ago, and they don't expect everyone to have seen it. If your only exposure to Berserk was the animated television series chances are this is gonna have stuff you've never seen.
-
<i>Berserk</i>'s a lot like <i>One Piece</i>, except <i>Berserk</i>'s mangaka is at least five times as likely to suffer an early death as Oda, likely one involving DMT, Colombian Cocoa Puffs, and a pile of stolen idol panties.
-
I'd like to see Miura finish the blasted manga before either he or I die of old age. I want to know whether taking Casca to elf land will turn out the way I think it will, which is badly. I want to know if mysterious kid is who I think it is.
-
Yeah, I'm not complaining about the lack of laser pistols, killer walls, and Evil Otto. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berzerk
-
There are apparently going to be several movies, though. The goal is to tell the manga storyline in its entirety.
-
The name of the arc is "The Golden Arc". Of cource it will look nice and happy in the beginning. 10 000 $ bet the "The Black Swordsman" arc will haunt your dreams.
-
OHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGOD!....(wipes drool from mouth and tents his fingers Mr. Burns style)...Eeeexxxcellent
-
Looks like they kept cutting away right before any real gore would be spilled. That said... OMG OMG OMG OMG MORE BERSERK! OMG OMG OMG SQUEEEEEEE!!!!!!!
-
(stoopid double post)
-
"The soundtrack is reminiscent of Hirasawa's compositions" because it's Hirasawa in there at the 1:15 mark with a taste of the new theme song. The Berserk anime was my first exposure to his work, and I'm really looking forward to hearing this in full. Impatient, even.
-
I really hope these films continue the events after the Eclipse. As an OVA series or whatever, I don't care. I want to see the Village of Lost Children and Conviction arcs animated before the hair on my head turns gray.
-
THE MANGA IS A THOUSAND TIMES BETTER!!!! The story only really gets rolling AFTER the eclipse, and after THAT cliffhanger ending, you weren't the elast bit curious of how things continued?
-
Berserk is the story of one man's struggle against the tide of fate, of the betrayal of friendship for the price of one's dream, and the all encompassing shittiness of the world and the universe in general. It is one of the greatest works of fantasy of all time. It also has rape horses, kinky demons who make the Cenobites look Puritan, and some of the greatest ultraviolence ever depicted by human hands. I did mention the rape horses, right?
-
It's the first of three films. Thery're not really pulling an Evangelion, they're going to take it up past the end of the anime, I believe.
-
I LOVE Berserk. I couldn't get myself to read the manga, but I adored the anime series. I'll reserve judgement on this new thing until it disappoints me in person. I'm just glad we're getting something from the series after all this time.
-
Wat? I don't even understand. Why is another retelling of the golden age being done? The anime was awesome, one of my all time favorites. Is this gonna be another evangelion, doing the same story over and over again?
-
...This is Rob you're talking about.
-
Personally, I think Berserk is at its best when we're learning about the characters rather than watching Guts eternally wade through more demons. That's actually why I enjoyed the anime more than the manga, which was perhaps the only series I've ever read where the fights slowed things down. Also, endless horrible rape scenes didn't do it any favors in that regard.
-
Children, children, behave or Mr. Bricken will take away our recess. Now, if you don't like the series on its own merits, that's your prerogative. But if you dislike it solely because it's not what you expected it to be, well, perhaps you should reconsider how you approach entertainment or start making your own.
-
You know, it annoys me whenever anyone thinks that Berserk is pretty much Saw set in the middle ages in terms of violence. It's got a solid plot and relatable characters, people. Quit oogling at the Guts' pectoral muscles for 5 seconds and take a step back!
-
While Berserk does feature some of the most gruesome violence ever committed to paper, the series itself is pretty thick with plot and story - the six minutes here pretty much highlighted a lot of the pivotal plot points of the first third of the overall saga published to date. I must say though, if they kept all the crazy violence in, someone whose only exposure to Berserk is this teaser is going to FREAK when they see the whole thing...

Looks like I won't have to lose my shit over the 1st movie. It being a fresh minting of part of the first anime. When the next movie is out...all bets are off.
-
This is one of my favourites! C'mon with a name like Guts how could the main character not be awesome? This was a bit boring but it is nice to know more is coming!
-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spriggan Another misappropriation by Anime. The silly hair is silly. And Japanese pop not period. Zweihander is German like you said, not Norse. I was assuming from the title it would be closer to a Norse epic. But really it was a joke. You obviously missed it. You may also want to read about the root of the word Berserk: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berserker Also: Eat a dick.
-
I'm pretty sure it's not 100% CG, it just seems like a nice mix. I'm looking forward to this!
-
Says the person with the title of an anime movie as part of their user name. The silly hair is appropriate for the emulated time period so I don't know why you are moaning about it. As for massive swords, the sword Guts uses during the Golden Age is a Zweihander which was used during the middle ages in Germany.
-
A movie called Berserk? Sounds cool... 30 seconds in and NO Vikings? WTF?! Just poncy men with silly haircuts. Keep your ridiculous Final Fantasy weapon Anime BS. Vikings or GTFO.
-
I was hoping the new Berserk series/movie would continue the saga rather than rehash the original. The original anime was a story told to perfection with great atmosphere, characters, pacing, and music. If you wanted to expose new audiences to the Berserk mythos, then why not clean up those episodes and put out a well-deserved blu-ray edition? Then you could continue with the Black Swordsman story arcs. If this is going to be a movie, then I'm worried about how they can squeeze 25 great episodes into 1.5 to 2 hours. And all this seems so familiar for fans of the original Berserk anime. On the plus side, the preview shows the same themes and dedication to the source material. The focus on the friendship between Griffith, Guts, Casca, and the other Hawks. The animation is gorgeous and the soundtrack is reminiscent of Hirasawa's compositions. I'm not too worried about the lack of blood because it's just a preview. While it may not reach the original's level of gore, the blood should flow freely in the battles and, of course, Griffith's ascension.
-
I wonder if gameplay would be enhanced if drenched in spray virgin sweat?
-
The anime toned down the child violence as well, compared to the manga. As for darkness and grit, it looks like it is mostly telling the Golden Age period of the storyline, which intentionally wasn't the heavy darkness and grit of the rest of the series.
-
It's the not rapey part of the story. There are no scenes of child Guts, so that would cut out Guts being raped. There are no scenes of the Eclipse, or even of the period where Griffith is imprisoned, so that would cut out Casca being raped. The anime itself danced around Guts being raped as a child. Actually, the anime danced around or replaced pretty much any scenes of violence against children.

Give it to me. Now. I wonder if there will be Black Swordsman prologue, or if they're just starting with the Golden Age arc.
-
And here I was hoping for a musical... http://youtu.be/avYiHUkas18
-
If they are cg-enhancing the animation, they should have made it look more like Kentaro Miura's work. But yeah, it doesn't even have the "grit" of the first adaptation. Although, if the do the Golden Age arc all slick, but add some grit after the first eclipse that could be cool. No matter what though, I am glad we are getting some more animated Berserk which looks to be more faithful to the manga than the first go.
-
Nope. Nope nope nope. The characters are almost entirely 3d cell shaded whatevers.
-
Seems a lot less rapey than I remember.
-
I dunno, the amount of blood in this vid seems appropriate to the style of the movie. That said, the preview is mostly exposition, and hasn't gotten into the meaty bits of violence we can expect (especially with Nosferatu Zodd). Overall, I'm excited... but we may not be seeing it stateside... And if we do, it looks like they want to tell the first half of the Golden Age arc in 80 minutes with exquisite detail... Which has already been done in the anime. Which, as this movie appears to be, pretty much shot for shot the manga.
-
It looks a little too clean for Berserk, but overall it still looks pretty good.
-
Berserk 1.11: You Can Not Behelit But seriously, this looks fucking awful. They've washed away all the darkness and grit so as to make it more palatable for a larger audience. Goodbye graphic child murder...
-
I was really hoping for robots and a bouncing smiley faced menace.
-
Some of the backgrounds are cell-shaded but the characters are hand drawn. Just sayin' :)
