35mm 4-perf. Academy film format is natively about 18x22mm / 11/16x7/8 inches for about 1.27:1. It's only made widescreen by cropping to 3-perforations or using an anamorphic lens to double the horizontal information for a 2:1 squeeze of about 2.39 to 1. So all the sh** where they remaster 35mm Academy shows (almost none save Babylon 5 were shot 3-perf. until the late '90s and were using less negative area (less resolution anyway)) and reframe them 16:9 are actually robbing you of frame area. This is why all the Star Trek movies except 6 (shot Super 35 (~2-1/2 perforations 24mm/1" wide) and cropped for budgetary reasons) are scope, to give the viewer at least as much resolution as the TV shows! It'd be a big irony using a lower res. format for the big screen when all the shows that inspired it used the full 4-perf. negative area. I really think the SFX in the remasterd TOS are tacky. I love the Okudas, but you can really tell there was no budget for good CGI. It looks bad in standard def., let alone HD, not that the soft composites Howard Anderson did were much better. Anyway, they replaced bad '60s SFX with bad 2000s SFX, and that is a real shame.
-
That's silly. The widescreen part that was cut off for 4:3 is probably unusable footage anyway
-
16:9 ??? Disappointed that they are not remastering the Star Trek: TNG series in 16:9 since it was originally filmed in widescreen but mastered in pan-in-scan. Too bad given the amount of work that is going to be done.
-
Please don't be ignorant. They filmed it on FILM, and scanned it to videotape for editing. The cleaned-up and restored film will be re-edited from scratch to make the episodes, and FX will be recreated for HD. Live action scenes will not require any CG.
-
I've just started going back and rewatching DS9 on Netflix... damn, that show is still awesome.
-
They filmed much of TNG on VHS. The only way they're going to get any extra detail out of it is to CG the hell out of every frame.
-
"The naked now" will include a never-before-seen recut of Data's "Fully functional" equipment ... What, he has a special tricorder, perverts!
-
My mind read that with Ron Burgundy's voice.
-
I remember when the home video market for television shows was next to nothing. Sci Fi shows like Star Trek and X-Files were some of the few on VHS. And then you'd get two or three episodes per tape. Not sure if many had full seasons or not or just best of sets. I think I had some TOS and some Next Gen eps. Never got into the whole subscrittion deal for full seasons. I didn't bite on the TNG DVD box sets when those were big.. If these aren't too wallet gorging, I may have to partake in the full seasons eventually. You know, unless holographic layered disks don't ursurp Blu Ray too soon or we go to solid state drive storage or some shit.
-
Very impressive. When I can find them used or maybe a screaming deal on them - I'll definitely look into buying them.
-
go fuck yourself troll boy does that make sense to you?
-
Did your comment really made sense to you?
-
I can't believe people are bitching about what the price is going to be, you guys act like blurays never go on sale.
-
redone effects? ugh. No thanks. Bad enough Star Wars fans have to deal with that shit. Let's not have that happen to Star Trek. Yeah yeah. I know they had alternate cuts of TOS do it on the DVD sets or something.
-
It's a shame...a shame that all copies of 80's Twilight Zone weren't destroyed.
-
It's in his genes!
-
FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK!!!!!! How the hell am I supposed to save up for moving to England when they release shit like this. GOD DAMN IT!!! NOW I HAVE TO BUY A BLURAY PLAYER!! Sigh they have us by the balls don't they. That was ........ gorgeous.
-
I think they'd be missing out if they didn't, though it doesn't have quite the appeal to the genpop as TNG does. Can you imagine the space battles in "Sacrifice of Angels" and "Favor the Bold" in Hi-Def? That'd be awesome to see, frankly...
-
Mulling it over, that's true. I'll probably pick up Season 3 as well. But The first 2 can wait until I feel the need. I'd want to see the Wolf 359 battle in Hi-Def, but a courtroom scene about Data's sentience will be fine in 4:3 for now.
-
I'll buy this if only it convinces Paramount to give DS9 the same love and care as TNG. Fuck Voyager!!
-
Hey, it's Duke in HD.
-
Joke all you want but it actually would have added an unexpected twist to an otherwise predictable plot that they could have pulled off for tv in just a line of dialog. Some people hated that episode but I enjoyed it as it had the best acting by what's his name that plays Riker in the whole series - playing crazy Riker hunted by borg, I'm always impressed by what even a mediocre actor can do with a good line of dialog.
-
So you don't need The Measure of a Man, Time Squared, Q Who, Yesterday's Enterprise, or The Best of Both Worlds Part1? Those are some of the best episodes of the whole series that you would be missing out on.
-
HEY-O!
-
That sounds disturbingly like the setup for FFF, Abraxas!
-
Those things were over a hundred bucks each for every season. Me and my damn need to purchase the day of release. I'll buy just to make sure they keep releasing. Full series sets are always a better deal than individual. But I can't wait and some never get released. I don't see a DS9 or Voyager full series set.
-
Don't forget "Q Who", possibly the best episode from season 2. I wonder if they are just cleaning up the episodes or will they redo the FX like in the remastered TOS episodes.
-
i hope your happy now.........i can never watch standard TNG every again.........i live in Ireland so gods knows when the Blue Rays will reach us.......god damn.......i have to own them now.........you bastard.
-
I figure that I'll wait until they release seasons 4 through 7 and then just pick up those. I don't need the first 3 seasons, and it'll give me time to save my monies for when the good seasons are released. But if we're really lucky, they'll fall in line with current TV show set pricing being as low as $39 but possibly as high as $79. I never could understand why the DVD sets were so damn expensive. Even the Cube of all 7 seasons was cheaper than 4 of the individual seasons...
-
Not to mention Troi's glorious camel-toe in HD
-
Holy fucking crap!!! I expected it to look better...but if there is this much of an improvement during at least the first 4 seasons then holy shit is this worth every penny....not that I wasn't going to buy it anyways mind you, but still...damn that's pretty.
-
Nothing would help Shades of Grey, except getting money back to watch each showing.
-
Wanna feel even older? This year marks the 25th anniversary of the third season of Generation One Transformers, and Beast Wars premiered 16 years ago this coming September.
-
*hops out of the DeLorean* Hey, what's this Blu-ray that everyone's talking about? Is it like W-VHS?
-
Dear God, WANT!! But I live in terror of just how much the season sets will cost. The old season sets were painful enough.
-
Dear God, WANT! But I live in terror of just how much will the full season sets cost. The old versions were painful enough individually.
-
are your rodenberries feeling conflicted?
-
I've long been put-off on owning the series, as the DVD collections that have been released over the past decade are typically over-priced, especially considering how little work went into them and how old the series is. Given that it's been in syndication for two decades I can't help but feel that fans have paid the studio back tenfold, there's no reason collected seasons couldn't be offered affordably. As incredible as the HD remaster looks (and sounds) I just don't think I can shell out for 7 seasons at Blu-Rape prices, even admitting that it looks like a tremendous amount of effort has been put into cleaning it up.
-
i myself am miffed they didn't do a Riker/Worf sketch in that episode where Worf is travelling through parallel worlds.
-
I feel very meh about this. TNG was great when it was good but more frequently it was not good, not actually crap, but nothing I'd want to rewatch as so much of the writing was... unimaginative to the point of being disturbing - like the "Planet Africa Stereotypes" episode, ham-fisted political BS - like the "warp speed is destroying the universe" episode or just very poorly handled - like the "Riker gets an androgynous girlfriend" episode.
-
oh great. they give us the un-remastered Troi-ass and the remastered Riker ass. bastards.
-
Eh, it's worth putting up with the duds for "Heart of Glory," "Conspiracy," and "The Neutral Zone," and if nothing else it'll be cool seeing the effects for more FX-oriented episodes "The Last Outpost," "11001001" and "Haven." I can't get over how cleaning up the image improves "Encounter at Farpoint" for a sense of wonder and majesty. Not going to help "Shades of Grey" or anything, but still...
-
i sense somebody's rodenberries about to go ripe!
-
Looks beautiful, although pretty pictures can't make up for the almost overwhelming lameness of season's 1 & 2... Urrrgh! Imagine Shades of Grey in glorious HD... :)
-
"Twenty-five years ago, Star Trek: The Next Generation re-launched Gene Roddenberry’s “Wagon Train to the Stars” onto television and into the hearts of a generation of fans." Whoa, hold the phone. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS??? It's been THAT long? Christ, I'm old. :(
-
can't wait to see Troi's temple-stacked hair in HD LOL
-
Holy CRAP that looks good.
-
IOt sounds like they remastered the sound as well. I can hear the Main engine in the background in every scene =D I wonder why Duke and Prowl wanted to starve that poor space creature?
-
Wow, that looks pretty good. I guess now I'll have to watch the series all over again, and by the time the last season is done, the holos of TNG season 1 will be released.
-
Amazing! Can't wait to see the first three episodes. Just ordered the Blu-ray. I'm glad they're doing this. The SD episodes on TV look like crap due to the film being converted to video for editing and special effects. Other series were made in the Eighties the same way. For example, The Twilight Zone. Unfortunately, it can't be remastered like STNG due to the fact that the original film negatives don't exist anymore.
