Personally, I loved it. It was a little challenging but not super hard. Certainly not as hard as playing original Nintendo games. It took me a few tries to get through some of the levels but in all, it was a ton of fun.
-
Never though this would be something I would ever type, but: There's no point vomiting on the mermaid, it's useless. I just finished the game in a couple of hours, and it made me laugh with glee every few minutes or so (when I wasn't backtracking due to having used up my last life, which wasn't that often). I was flabbergasted when I checked back in at TR and found so many bitchy comments.

Really fun!. The frustrations of earlier posters only kept me that much more interested. I haven't played a game since Sega CD (yikes) and this was such a nostalgic trip...I loved every single moment of it! It plays according to my memory. I'lll play it some more, just for the extra awards. Love it!!!
-
No they won't. Obviously. Because that would be stupid.
-
You can also enter the "Contra" code on the "Contra" level before you die, which makes the game split into two-player mode. However, when I did so, it made the entire game lock up, so be warned. I can think of few games that have made me laugh and smile as much as this one.
-
NES games weren't awesome because of shitty design and cheap, repetitive gameplay. They were awesome in spite of those aspects. Shitty design isn't nostalgia. This game is a failure.
-
obviously never played NES
-
On what planet is this game 'hard'? You don't need to write a book about it just because you suck at games.
-
I liked it up until I got stuck in a corner for the Wrestling section. I couldn't do anything except get hit, even after respawning. I'll take another crack at it later...
-
thanks! Or just post it here if you wanna do it the easy way. I actually didn't think of that. btw, you might want to make sure it saves your progress before getting far, saving could potentially go screwy using it locally depending on how they did that part.
-
You are wonderful. <a href="http://www.abobosbigadventure.com/abobo.swf">Wonderful!</a>
-
I love it and I loathe it. both nostalgically. "little" joe is just irritating the crap out of me. I keep getting so close but the timing towards the end is just as frustrating as in punch out.
-
I didnt really think that would work. brackets are less than and greater than signs: [a href="theswf"] some test [/a]
-
create an html file with the link to the swf file. right click, save as. if you don't know html, just make a text file saved as something.htm or something.html. and put something like this in it: <a href="theswflocation">some text</a>

I'm tempted to suggest that you're misremembering the SUPER NES as being what the NES was like. Hell, that first stage. Go back and play Double Dragon. Not 2, play Double Dragon. On your NES. No cheating and playing the one on Master System or the arcade one, play the NES one. Now try to tell us how Obobo's Big Adventure was actually worse than that. As to frustrating, well, I died quite a bit at the end boss portion, but I was always kinda lousy at Punch Out, but leading up to that I didn't even use any continues, so I'm not sure what your complaint is as to it being "frustrating and overly difficult".
-
Well, Contra didn't exactly volunteer the Konami code the way the Obobo's Big Adventure Contra segment did...
-
Well, unfortunately, my Plug 'n' Play controller somehow power surged the USB ports on my computer every time I tried to use it (my POS computer is 15 years old), so I have no idea how it plays. However, the instructions do say that it's pretty much meant to be played with a traditional NES controller, and tells you how to hook one up to your computer, so I'm guessing it works like a charm.
-
It reminds of the challenge the Friday the 13th game for NES gave me as a kid (and adult...) - the sheer frustration of beating Jason for the first time, only for him to kick your ass in about 20 seconds in the second go-round (one time I actually made it to his "third form" and was not surprised when I promptly died). This is a good thing.
-
it's a nod to Balloon Fight, which was pretty much Joust reskinned. The best idea is to stick near the top of the screen, and when you see Amazon in his jetpack, veer left to go behind him.
-
But does it work? I didn't bother to use it, I just noticed it there.
-
I think this is one of those games where you really have to let yourself play it a bit before forming an opinion. I liked it too much on the humor and not enough on the game at first. Then I was judging the gameplay a bit too quickly just because of my hatred of water levels. Having put some real time into it now? I officially love this game. I can really see why it might not appeal to a lot of people. But this is a really awesome retro experience for me.
-
I tried looking in the source code and copypasting the url for the SWF, but it just redirected me to the game page, and I tried looking in my temporary internet files. Any other ideas?
-
Not super easily, but the swf downloads and runs locally just fine.

Well: Stage 1: A lot of fun (found the secret?), but needed to be longer. Stage 2: I didn't find the water level as annoying as many did, but it was kind of short. I also chose the right answer with the mermaid. Stage 2.5: Urban Champion. That was kind of funny, especially if you're played the game. Stage 3: This one took me the LONGEST. Lots of fun, although the boss was way too durable in the end. Stage 4: Balloon Fight... my least favorite stage, although I was able to control well, because I've played Balloon Fight. Mostly, once you get in the right groove, it suddenly becomes really easy without much payoff.Stage 4.5: Pro Wrestling: AWESOME! I love the NES game. It's really simplistic, but just a lot of fun, and this managed to capture that feeling. Stage 5: Megaman 2: The Quick Man lasers are a little slower than in the NES game, but still nasty to deal with. Most of my deathswere when I misjudged moving off a platform, and was still on it (if even one pixel of Abobo is on a platform, he will not fall). The boss was insanely difficult, but a lot of fun to fight. Stage 6: Contra: LOTS OF DEATHS FOR ME, although there would be much fewer if I tried again. Insanely fun, with a hilarious Lemmings joke. Stage 7: Punch-Out: Punch-Out IN REVERSE! Genius. I won this one at the tail end of round 3, and it was a nail-biting edge-of-my-seat struggle. Great job! Bonus Game: Luck Dragon: Fun for about thirty seconds, after which you unlock a poster.
-
Aha! Well, that changes everything!
-
Did the same thing. I was in the middle of work work. But man, this deserves taking a break if anything does.
-
Yeah, there's a link to using a controller right on the game.
-
Yeah, there's a link to using a controller right on the game.
-
Mate with the mermaid, get an invincibility shield, and then coast through the electric seaweed. The rest of it's not bad if you go slowly and take down every enemy you see.
-
THIS GAME IS FANTASTIC AAAAAAAH
-
Cant get past that stupid swimming stage!
-
Quick, name two things that piss me off about underwater levels. And this game has them both. The frustration is part of the nostalgia tho.
-
My opinion on the game is mixed. It's definitely tough, but I've played harder games even among modern games, let alone retro games like this. Mega Man 9 makes this look like a cakewalk. And while starting over at the beginning of a stage when you continue is annoying, it sure beats starting the game over like many old games forced you to do. One thing this game does right is shake up the gameplay. As much as I love Super Mario Crossover, it suffers from repetitive gameplay and gets old after awhile. Abobo's Big Adventure changes the gameplay every stage, and that keeps it interesting most of the time. The only level I didn't like of the ones I saw was the level where you're on balloons, partly because I couldn't get past it, partly because it plays like a less fun version of the water level, and mostly because it's just not fun. I'm also not sure which game that stage is a nod to. I agree with others that the rage meter could have been better implemented. It's not going to help you when you're struggling because it drains when you get hit, making it superfluous most of the time in the sense that if you're doing well enough to charge it up, you probably don't need it. However, it's good for bypassing the occasional mini-boss (I used it to take out Bubble Man in the water level the first time I got to him). Still, more often than not I found myself wasting the rage attack on normal enemies just to see what it looked like for that stage.
-
It's hard for a reason. Deal with it. I cut my teeth on old NES games and I managed to get to the third form of the level three boss on my first set of 5(!) lives.. And the penalties for dieing are waaay lighter than most old NES games. If you want your hand held, don't play it. But it's not bad. Probably a solid B, if I had to grade it.
-
I don't know about Nihilistic1, but I grew up on NES games. Games that controlled as shitty as this weren't any fun back then, either.
-
Meh. It's not fun.
-
I felt the same. the parts that "didn't work" were clearly on purpose. even then it felt more consistent than the old nes games so it wasn't really as frustrating.
-
wow that's a lot of text for "it sucks".
-
my A S hand was starting to fall asleep after re playing the water level. they need to let you use real controls now
-
I gotta say, I think the game would be a whole lot better if I didn't have to use the damn keyboard. I like the execution and the style, but it's really fucking hard to play when my instinct is telling me the D-pad is where my left hand is and the buttons are where my right is.
-
Bah, you can't download it and play it offline, can you?
-
Well, having actually played it now. It's okay. As a tribute to an era, it's fine. As a game. It's functional. I don't think the Rage mechanic works well. Getting hit lowers your Rage meter. This means that if you want to actually use Rage you need to be good enough at the game to not need it. A better tribute game is Rokko Chan. Which is pretty blatantly a Mega Man knock off but it's mechanically sound, fun, and has a tight, consistent feel across the whole game. In Abobo, by the time I get used to playing Double Dragon I find myself in the water level. By the time I master that I'm in Zelda. It's novel but feels scatter-brained. Oh, and the Zelda dungeon map is in the shape of a cock and balls. Classy. You want to play a good retro Flash game? Play Rokko Chan. Want to play a good retro RPG? Play NEStalgia.
-
"Well, I'm done with work for the day." "But you're in the middle of this huge pro..." "Yep. Done with work." "Millions of dollars are at stake here!" "Done. With. Work."
-
I've played many, many, many NES games, and I gotta agree with Nihilistic1. The games isn't funny or nostalgic enough to keep me playing past level 2.
-
Haven't played many NES games have you? The game play is exactly as I expected. Growing up with the games this is based on, I can honestly say it plays the same.
-
By the way... After playing it... I'm sorry but.... It sucks. All this wait, and it's an annoying, frustrating piece of shit that plays lousy. Then again, it's typical to expect this kind of thing from an also typical flash game played on a keyboard. These games are rarely good, and this one isn't any exception. But it has far more problems than that. Strictly from a gameplay sense, this game is HORRIBLY designed. It's very unbalanced and poorly planned out on the difficulty side of things. You aren't given nearly enough life, the enemies are way too hard and extremely cheap, not to mention too hard to get their health down. This supposed "rage" meter is useless, and will never decently build up. So frustrating and overly difficult, due to it being too difficult to hit enemies, and them being extremely cheap, that I can't even get past the first level, and continuing sets me all the way back at the beginning of the level. As annoying as that is, with the game being too hard, the shitty keyboard controls don't help matters. The game is kind of funny, but it's clear that all of the effort went into the sprites, and none into the actual gameplay side of things, in which it's pretty abysmal. It's not worth putting up with, in order to get the rather repetitive joke: All the enemies are from other NES games, and Abobo is supposedly Chuck Norris. The end. Hopefully, i've spared a few people from having to deal with the annoyance and frustration of this. Shame after all that hype, this is what comes from it. Basically, It would have been far better if it was just a flash cartoon. Since that's all the material really seems to be good for. Instead, it's a typical shitty flash game that will, instead have you tearing your hair out and making your time feel wasted, rather than enjoying it.
-
HELL YEAH. Going there right now.
-
I give it 4 days before Nintendo Cease and Desist's it.
-
damn....it froze on me
-
Awesome!
-
That game harder then most nes games. LOL. Loved it.
-
Hey now; NEStalgia is pretty boss too. Just not flashy and EXTREME as Abobo here. Still, thanks for the heads up. I've lost the rest of my day for sure. And I had entirely forgotten about this project so this is a great surprise today.
