Warning: This is another new Avengers TV spot, and it contains new footage, more Hawkeye and more Helicarrier. It also contains Steve Rogers giving the Incredible Hulk a bit of... advice, a moment so awesome my pants disintegrated. Now I need to get a new pair of pants... after I watch this video about 1,800 more times. Infinite thanks to Doctor Oddfellow for the tip.
More links from around the web!
For some reason, my favorite shot is the Helicarrier taking to the air. Maybe it's because they're actually taking the "carrier" part seriously for once.
I was worried given Joss' recent track record with that horrible "Buffy season 9" comic (Buffybot? Really?). But thank God, it looks like he knows just what we want and is giving to us in glorious detail.
YES! Hulk actually ON the team, that insanly simple and glorious thing that always seems to elude the 616.
Maybe this is like the start of the third and let's pretend final Indiana Jones film. Maybe this is where the Hulk got the idea of smashing stuff.
I'm sorry, but this is looking like a series finale of a Marvel/DC cartoon that's kicking my ass. How do you top this?!?!?
There's nothing that brings tears to a nerd's eyes quite like a happy Hulk that is about to tear some shit up.
Okay, so I'm guessing Hulk isn't the mindless berserker I'm used to seeing in the comics (Granted it's been a few years since I picked up a comic) and Bruce now has as least some control over him?
Well... Hulk has been all over the place in terms of intelligence. There was the beginning, when he was able to say stuff like "Leave Hulk alone. Hulk doesn't like you!" and there were periods where Banner's mind was in complete control, meaning Hulk would be talking about advanced scientific concepts. There were points when he was completely coherent and articulate but also completely separate from Banner (Planet Hulk, Mr. Fixit). And yes, he has occasionally gone full-on savage and been reduced to "HULK SMASH" as the limit of his vocabulary.
But the "mindless berserker" you're remembering? That never really existed. Even in the beginning he was never mindless. There were a couple points where he was full-on savage, but even then he was capable of coming up with strategies to beat his opponents and not just hitting things in a blind rage.
I think you're probably mixing up the TV version with the comic version. Hulk hasn't been a completely mindless rage-thing very often, and even when he was, Banner got control before things got too bad.
I haven't read any of the comics in years, so I don't know what's actually going on there, but I was a HUGE Hulk fan back in the day and I can tell you there were plenty of periods when the Hulk was not a mindless berserker, even if everyone else thought he was. He had a brain, limited though it might be, and a personality, and could talk. As much as I liked (parts) of Ang Lee's movie and adored (most) of Edward Norton's version, the Hulk there was just a snarling beast for the most part because it's easier.
Also, I have been watching the Cap and Hulk exchange on a loop pretty much nonstop since I first saw it last night. In fact, I'm going to stop typing and watch it ag...
I'm actually hoping they play the Hulk the way he's been in the majority of his history: not too smart, but not completely mindless. Hulk has been able to talk since day 1 and has had his own unique personality for most of his comics (granted, said personality has changed many, many times over the years).
It seems that the cinematic portrayals of The Hulk have been mostly informed by the Lou Ferrigno TV version. This is a shame. Personally, I hope they go with the version present in the current Avenger's cartoon. Let the Hulk talk. Let him have a personality. Let him be front and center most of the film instead of Banner.
Goddammit guys. I need help. I've loved Marvel and The Avengers all my life but nothing about this movie is really exciting me. Perhaps it's because I don't see Cap, Thor, Black Widow and Nick Fury on the screen, I see Chris Evans in a funny shaped helmet, some big wrestler guy, Scarlett Johansson and weird, old Samuel L Jackson. The generic alien army and the big Bayformers monster at the end aren't interesting me at all so far, Loki just looks like Hans Gruber minus the awesome, Hawkeye looks painfully lame compared to the others and Hulk... well Hulk is pretty cool. But honestly the only thing that is consistently keeping my attention here is Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark. I long to feel the same tingle of excitement that I felt way back, seeing the first Iron Man movie and hearing Agent Coulson say 'Just call us SHIELD', then waiting after the credits to get our first real glimpse at an Avengers movie. But since then I haven't been that interested in any of this. It feels like when Rob was getting insanely pumped for Tron: Legacy and I didn't give a fuck at all. I want to be excited so badly but it just ain't happening...
I get what you are saying. You think of your heroes then see the same old actors making your heroes conform to the acting style instead of the actor reaching to act like the character. Hopefully the writers wrote to the characters instead of the actors. (I.E. a Nick Fury/pulp fiction's Jules Winnfield character)
HULK TOUCH SMASHY LIKE BRAXY TOUCH HULK!!!!!!!
Sorry, don't know what came over me. Seriously, what the hell?
TRON: Legacy is a great flick.
Avengers will be good if Whedon doesn't over-Whedonize it.
Honestly, if you can't find something to like in that trailer then comic books are not for you.
I already said I love comic books, Marvel in particular. I also said there are parts of this movie I'm excited for. My problem is that I'm just not feeling the overwhelming enthusiasm that everyone else is, and that I expected to.
It's okay, DoctorSmashy, because I should have acknowledged you did say you liked some things. However, you premised all that with categorically saying that NOTHING about the movie was really exciting to you. Now you're saying the opposite, which makes me think your negative comments were needlessly apathetic and ultimately throwaway.
It's just amazing. Not 10 years ago, we wouldn't have even gotten a Avengers movie, much less a Avengers movie that amount to a huge, comic book-style crossover event without the needless bogging down of a quajillion origin stories taking up the first hour and a hastily slammed together villain for the final. We live in a pretty cool time, where we get to see some cool stuff from our youth portrayed in a non-schmaltzy original Captain America B Movie style, and people still can't wait to apply the apathy.
I said that Hulk looks cool and Robert Downey Jr has been consistently keeping me interested. That should have made it clear that while I am not incredibly excited for anything in the movie, there are parts I like the look of. We cool now brah?
Actually, you said there was nothing about the movie really exciting you, which is the complete opposite of saying there are parts of the movie you're excited for. So which one is it?
I kinda understand you on this.
I mean I'm excited because it's Loki! And Iron Man! And Thor'n'Loki!
But then I'm like it's... Mark Ruffalo? Well he could be good, I guess. And Jeremy Renner could kick some ass... Also, ...Scarlett Johansson...oh. Well, she's...hmm, yeah.
Also I'd rather watch Bucky but I know that's not gonna happen.
And I'm pretty ambivalent towards Whedon (blasphemy I know).
I'm looking forward to this movie for a number of reasons, but mostly because it looks like they finally got the Hulk right.
There has been nothing about these clips that haven't given me trilled tingles in my nethers. And lo, Whedon did lead us into the light.
99% of my doubts about that movie just vanished....Now all I can do is hope that Robert Downy Jr's screen presence doesn't completely faceroll over Chris Evans. But even if it does...maybe it'll be OK.
I....I now know what love is. Love is Captain America telling the Hulk to smash. My hear bursts and screams with this newfound knowledge. Thank you Avengers Movie, thank you forever with lollipops.
