It seems like I'm one of the few people in the world who thinks this, but I loved the original Evangelion show, and I cannot for the life of me, stand the Rebuild series. It seems like Rebuild ditched most of everything that made Evangelion special in hopes of appealing to a wider audience. It feels, to me at least, like Hideaki Anno has contracted George Lucas syndrome, and can't stop toying with his old works in a desperate attempt to stay relevant.

@Benjyl I walk the middle ground of liking the original Eva series, and LOVING the new movies. I like how Shinji used to be so pathetic and deeply involved in his own issues, but I also love how he is now depicted as not just full of angst, but also full of anger, particularly to one shitty parent of his. It's the kind of characterization shift that, while noticeable, remain faithful to its source, and I for one could really, really approve it more!
@Benjyl It will probably never be quite the same as the rumors were that he was going through some pretty crazy issues that he managed to get out in the anime. Eva has never really been a mecha anime anyways. It started that way just to throw you the curveball and make you invested in the messed up characters. The original show progressed to the point that there was actually very little actual Eva fights and that was on purpose. Eva is about teen angst and the issues of growing up and handling responsibility. It is an in depth look at the psyche and neurosis of these individual characters thrust into pretty horrible situations. I was always a big fan because it wasn't the standard OMG teen boy saves the world with giant mech woooooooo. Its a psychological look at a handful of horrible messed up individuals, living in a terrible world, trying to save a world most of them don't even really have a reason to save anyways.

at least its proof that an evangelion movie is being made the right way and not butcherd and changes by hollywood. plus that at least an evangelion movie is even happening

Ah, the long awaited third part of the "Everbody wants Shinji" quadrilogy. I'd probably be more hyped for it were the Rebuild series not approaching Duke Nukem Forever development times.
@mqtwells "Everybody wants Shinji"? Really? The only two people I saw who actually "wants" him was Rei and Kaworu, and that's being generous. Misato was being nice, and Asuka doesn't care much about him.

@NeoRickicker I swear to God that 2.0 was where it turned into a harem show. Quite aside from Rei, Asuka and Misato, you had the addition of Kaiji flirting with him and Mari parachuting onto him pantsu first. All that plus Kaworu? Sure is getting Tenchi Muyo in here... not that I'm complaining mind you! :)
Clearly Mari is the Mary Sue character of the Evangelion fan fiction Shinji created after the Third Impact when he recreated the world.
Sure is better than that other one he made that was a shitty high school drama where he runs into Rei with a piece of toast in her mouth.
And should I admit I have multiple Rei figures of that alternate world Rei alone? Then again Gainax has figures of Rei as a police woman, a gladiator, a moon rabbit, Santa Claus, a commando, a bear, and an actual Kewpie doll (or at least a cell phone charm). And those are just the ones I have. Never mind shit like the mermaid one I passed on.
Anyway.. The only thing that really matters is that a new female Evangelion pilot means that Gainax can have yet another character to make into all new figures!!!

@InspectorSpacetime @mqtwells @NeoRickicker I think Rei pulling what she did at the end of 2.22 (in addition to her comments in the elevator with Asuka) indicate she's got pretty strong feelings for him. Asuka's reaction to Rei's comments (and interaction with Shinji in general--at the aquarium, regarding bringing lunch, trying to learn how to cook to impress him) seem to point to her having significant feelings as well.
@mqtwells @NeoRickicker First off, Kanji flirts with everyone and rarely means it. There is none of the sexual tension between Shinji and Asuka there was in the show. Rei likes him about as much as someone of her emotional status can, and Misato is regularly a verbally abusive bitch to him.
Kaworu is a stretch since he has had less than a minute total in screen time.
Mari...Yeah. Okay, I have no idea what is going on there, we could probably use some elaborate.
As someone who found the original Evangelion to be overrated, I never got around to these movies. How do they compare to the original? More of the same really?

@Lithroe Up until one particular (seemingly small) event in the first film plays out differently it's pretty much the same. After that individual does something different it becomes increasingly different through out the films. Ignore the hype and haters and check it out. It has extra stuff for fans of the original to geek out over but is different enough that even if you found the original lacking you may enjoy the new take.

Someguy haven't said it yet, but without spoilers, the definitive reason why the Rebuild series of movies seemed better comes in the second film. That is, when Shinji yells two things. One is "FAAAAAAAAAAATHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEER!!" and the second one is "GIVE. AYANAMI. BACK!"Watch it, and you'll see what I mean.

@Lithroe While I liked the original Evangelion I was always surprised at the devotion many had with it. More of the same? Yes and no. Without saying too much I would put it as (right now without it completed) worth a borrow, but I'd wait until they were all out and make a weekend of it.
