Doctor Who? More like Doctor Woo-hoo! Um, sorry, but I'm really excited because the folks over at the BBC were lovely enough to just put the new Doctor Who minisode "The Great Detective" online for U.S. viewers. This originally aired overseas during today's Children in Need charity special, and it gives us a taste of what we can expect from the upcoming Christmas episode. After an adorable introduction in which Matt Smith is joined by new companion Jenna-Louise Coleman, we learn that Madame Vastra, her companion Jenny, and the (apparently Moon-hating) Strax have contacted the Doctor for assistance. Unfortunately, he is still too wounded from the loss of Amy and Rory during the events of "The Angels Take Manhattan" to be interested in anyone else's problems. Refusing to help, he announces that he has retired and sulks away -- presumably back to the Tardis so that he can listen to Joy Division and have a Gallifreyan crying session. While his retirement will probably last about five minutes, it's still nice to know that we can expect some humbugging from the good Doc once December 25th rolls around.
But wait, there's more! Here's the new trailer for the episode, called "The Snowmen." Chilling!:
Even with the Ponds gone, this brief look makes it clear that the storytale motif of the Steven Moffat era will continue on...albeit with a lot more silly snow monsters. The highlight for me of this was Richard E. Grant's scenery chewing. That's my two cents. Are you guys feeling this?

not to mention matts doctor now seems to be showing shades of the fifth doctor anger the way he told the group to not waste his time and he is retired.

have to say i am intriqued with how the doctor will get along with his new companion since jenna was playing a dalek. and now a companion of the doctor. plus nice to see madame vastra is back loved her character. minus her choice of lipstick. as for strax hating the moon could the moon play a part later in the season like a show down with the doctors big bad besides the maker of the snow men for the christmas special maybe finaly the master

I don't know why I bother to keep checking this site. Chris is doing an admirable job of keeping a sinking ship with a mast above water, I'll give him that. I guess it is that side of me that pauses as car wrecks, ect. This is where I went for nerd news. Rob had a perfect way of delivering it and the way the readers would respond was like in a high school cafeteria circa 1998, a table full of castoffs. Now what? I look at this io9 thing, to see what he left us for - crap. I do not know what to make of that site other than I do not wish to visit it. It is like if a hipster decided to do a style makeover of your nerd collection. And I can't even find a way to search for what Rob writes. You left this to be buried on some shite site? I hope the reasons were worth it.The question is where to go now? I'd rather poke my eyes out that use Bleeding Cool - I can't stand their incessant need to spoil everything and not even bother trying to hide it with links like *SPOILERS* Here Is The Spoiler Click Here to Read It Again - another thing Rob was great at: not ruining things for those of us who don't like them to be ruined.I feel like I needed to say something because I loved Topless Robot and all of the crazy characters and their opinions. Now it feels like an ex-girlfriend who had a train run on her by the football team stopped by my house to have me wash the jizz crust from her hair. Does that make sense? No. But I can't be bothered to find a .gif that properly equates my sadness.

I love Madam Vastra as a character, but I do wish they'd give her some green lipstick. Her pink lips stand out as very "mammal" on her scaly, green face.
Also, Matt Smith is lots of fun in this clip. I think I'm going to like the chemistry between the Doctor and his new companion.

Yes, I know, but her lips show outside. I'm not looking at the inside of her mouth, but her lips as they appear when her mouth is closed. Show me that effect-- fleshy, pink lips on a scaly face-- in the animal kingdom.
However, it's a nitpick when we're talking about a lizard woman with obvious tits.

I'm excited to see the Christmas episode and how the new companion will fit in. I do not know if this "darker" Matt Smith will be as the Doctor but i'm sure this is leading to something good.
I've been digging around the interwebs trying to uncover information about what's going on behind the scenes in the process to select the next grand poobah to run Topless Robot. During this process I ran everyone's name through an anagram generator to see if anyone involved is actually The Master. I think we're okay there but I did discover Chris Cummins name also spells Sin Circus hmm and Sic Mr Inchum as well as Chin Cums Rims. No idea what this means except that it clearly points to a conspiracy!
Also during the course of my investiogations I discovered that apparently M Night Shyamalan is going to direct the next Star Wars film - I find this hillarious

@Gallen_Dugall @Gallen_Dugall Please tell me you are joking about the M Night Shamalamadingdong. If that's the case I fear the same thing that happened with John Carter, something with such potential getting mistreated by Disney, I adored the movie but its doubtful anything more will happen due to the mishandling. Now if Shamalamadingdong is directing I await the days when the Prequels will be heralded as a golden age of Star Wars films. Sitting through the Last Airbender in the theater with friends and their kids and all you kept hearing from the kids around us asking "Why isn't it like it is in the cartoon? I don't understand this, why is it like that, that's not how it's supposed to be? I don't like this can we leave now?" and I heard that constantly from all the kids in the theater doesn't fill me with any hope. Besides he missed the boat on the big twist of the film series at the end of Empire.
@Remy @Gallen_Dugall yeah but we live in an age where talent skill and ability are completely divorced from opportunity. It's all about who you know (practically medieval in how important your parents are) and apparently MNS throws some good parties.

First there was the comment section that wasn't broken so you decided to break it. Even Rob said that comments went off a cliff after that debacle.
I don't know the circumstances of Rob's departure but this whole deal with no editor, barely three posts a day, and no weekend contest is only hurting the site. What other VVM blogs are there? True Crime, Toke of the Town? You killed off Joystick Division last summer. TR is your flagship blog and yet you indicate time and again that killing the goose that laid the golden egg is part of your mission statement.
Please, VVM Corporate Suits pretending to be loft-dwelling hippies, either kill off TR for good or make a damned decision on its future.

@doctor_mindbender To be fair they did have hundreds of applicants. I know a lot of HR people are just shoveling resumes into dumpsters (the last job I interviewed for I was one of one thousand to make it to the interview stage - talk about a cattle call) so the fact it seems as if everyone is getting a fair review I can appreciate - mind you this all should have been decided BEFORE Rob left, but right now it looks as if he didn't give much notice - we certainly didn't get much.

Great to see the new Who is out and i agree Chris why are you not running things here now?

As for Doctor Who, there has yet to be a decent Christmas special.
@megalan I generally agree, but felt like "A Christmas Carol" rose to the level of decent.
@Corbomite @megalan I'll see your decent and raise you "Pretty great", because I thought "A Christmas Carol" was, in fact, pretty great. The rest are all pretty meh, though. Though I do have a soft spot for the last fifteen minutes of "The Christmas Invasion."
