Believe me when I say to you, I hope the Russians love their boozy brew.
Yet, for all Sting's good-intentioned words about our similarities, the Russians remain quite different. For example, until today, they didn't legally consider beer to be alcohol.
Until now the brew has been considered a foodstuff along with all other drinks under 10 per cent in strength. An array of international and local brands from Amstel to Efes and Baltika to Zhiguli could be bought from street kiosks or at railway stations, as well as from countless 24-hour corner shops, just like fruit juice or mineral water.
You have to love their logic about why the new regulation - or as we call it, acknowledgement of reality - is a bad thing. Only a dyed-in-the-wool drunk would think of this:
"It will be tougher if you want to buy a beer on the way home from work, or pop down from your apartment...So you have to stock at home. And stocking beer is more problematic than stocking vodka. It's bulky, it's big, there's no room for it in small homes. It's much easier to buy two bottles of vodka and manage for your instant need for alcohol."
That's only one step above "In Russia, beer drinks you!"
I think we need to send over Larry the Cable Guy as a cultural ambassador to show them how people who live in American trailer parks have zero problemo finding room for beer.
As you nurse your hangover, read the whole story here.

@BrandoLars @10glfan59 I think it's the right amount of information...knowhatimean...
@10glfan59 I'm back in the regular world... the crappy mundane regular world... I miss orc women

I concur with the Russians. Most of the Domestics I've tried I wouldn't consider Alcohol either .
@rabidronnie @Someguy @Canadian.Scott Aw...I'm late. No matter. Time for hugs, everyone!
%s
@Someguy @rabidronnie @Canadian.Scott D'awww, you guys know how to make a girl feel welcome.

@Canadian.Scott @rabidronnie I'm sure at least part of it will, although that's a year away so they'll at least start peeking at it over the course of the season (possibly meeting a few more time-period versions of her). I think the "modern" one will be the one that eventually travels with him, though.
@rabidronnie I'm more interested to find out how there were so many copies of her floating around. I hope it will have to do with the big 50th Anniversary special. And i agree, Strax needs to be used more.
@Canadian.Scott @rabidronnie I don't think they'll kill her more than one more time, I think the "modern" version is the one they'll stick with. Kind of a bummer as I know some folks were looking forward to a companion outside our time period, but I'm optimistic. Seriously, though....can Strax come too?
@rabidronnie You must see the Hobbit because it was great, and yes The Snowman was amazing i just hope the new companion doesn't turn into Kenny from South Park...
@Canadian.Scott they did indeed! Yours?
As to the geek items of my vacation: didn't get to see the Hobbit yet :\ but the Snowmen was AWESOME.
You do of course realize that selling beer at train stations, gas stations or kiosks is a very, very common thing outside the US...?
@Winkeladvokat say, like in mysterious far off places like Canada. Or Quebec at least.
Personally I like vodka over beer 99% of the time anyhow. That said, I want a beer like the ancient Egyptians and Romans had that was essentially a low alcohol high protein liquid meal. But alas the only brewery that has experimented with that in the states is to far away and doesn't ship their experimental "ancient brews" to other states. :/
i don't see why you had to badmouth people living in trailers not every one who lives in a trailer is a white trash drunk
I do not understand why this story has been posted here. And there's a video link to a Sting music video? Why?
@paranoidrobot Same reason I posted about sex with skeletons in Sweden. Sometimes trivia that doesn't fit neatly into the genre-specific box is interesting. Especially on a slow news day.
@LYT @paranoidrobot Besides, there's no real concrete definition as to what is & isn't considered "nerdy". And if we can profile Japan for doing crazy s***, I think it's safe to say the same can go for other countries.
@SlyDante777 @LYT @paranoidrobot Hell, I keep up to date on porkbelly news and I am neither in commodities nor commerce. I just find it interesting. If that isn't a nerdy hobby, I sure as hell don't know what is.
@LYT @paranoidrobot I like the random news, plus I did not know that about Russia. I did read where recently Russia made it illegal for Americans to adopt Russian orphans.
Plus their leader jumped on the bandwagon and condemned us for having so many guns in his crazy comrade talk. Russian I think they call it.
Larry the Cable Guy is too busy with his show on the History Channel "Only in America" (okay quick survey - which is worse on the History channel Donald Trump, Larry TCG, or aliens?) but demographic stereotypes for fun aside I learned about putting cushions on top of cases of beer to make a sofa when I was living in San Diego so I think this is mainly common sense and ingenuity
also note that homebrewing is still illegal in Russia
@Gallen_Dugall This should let you know what i think about the History Channel...

@vangald @Canadian.Scott @Timely-Tardis-Lego
LOOK, AND TRY TO TELL ME I'M WRONG FOR THINKING SO!!
http://images.wikia.com/memoryalpha/en/images/f/f2/Culluh.jpg
@Timely-Tardis-Lego @vangald @Canadian.Scott @Gallen_Dugall really- because I think of Londo and the Centauri from B5
I know a lot of people hated that show but in it's defense may I simply point out BRUCE BOXLEITNER! That man makes the goofy ass dialog sound not just reasonable but absolutely inspiring. Plus in the commentary you can tell he enjoys the crap out of being an actor.
@vangald @Canadian.Scott @Gallen_Dugall Every time I see his hair, I end up thinking of those aliens from the first season of Star Trek: Voyager
@Gallen_Dugall Plus, there is the outside fridge. For storing beer outside. In case your outside. Let me know if I am going to fast for you Russians.
@Gallen_Dugall Having Larry the Cable Guy on History Channel is like having professional wrestling on Sci-Fi. Also, I'm convinced that 'Ancient Aliens' is a satire about conspiracy shows.
@skrag2112 @Gallen_Dugall Do you guys remember when The History Channel was about, well, history? The f*%k happened?
@East_Threadly @skrag2112 @Gallen_Dugall I remember when TLC was The Learning Channel...
@East_Threadly @skrag2112 @Gallen_Dugall Or MTV about music. Or G4 about games. Or Cinemax about softcore porn.
Oprah happened - or rather her company - bought out History, Discover, and a few others. Whoever was put in charge made a lot of changes for the worse - I'm sure it made them some money but history is not the focus of the channel anymore. Even Modern Marvels stopped providing historical context which makes the episodes rudderless blurb fests - it's a prime example of the change for the sake of change attitude that shifted the channel away from history.
