Carrie Remake Trailer Looks…Not Terrible?

I actually think this is one of those stories that can probably stand retelling once a generation. It taps into the fundamental unfairness we feel as adolescents, but doesn’t sugarcoat the consequences of rage-based wish fulfillment, as movies are often wont to do. Will it be as cinematically cool as Brian de Palma’s version? Probably not, but then neither is anything he does these days either.

Did you know that this isn’t the first Carrie remake (I’m not counting the sorta-sequel The Rage)? A good friend of mine did one prior, that was intended to spin off into a TV series (hence the radically different ending) if it had been well-received…which it was not.

ADDENDUM: I will say one more thing, that genuinely bothers me now that I remember it…

Carrie White in the book is fat. It’s one of many reasons she’s picked on.

In casting only thin actresses, Hollywood is complicit in exactly the same kind of bullying it is supposedly decrying. We ignore this because Sissy Spacek, Angela Bettis and Chloe Moretz are all phenomenal actors, and we love them.

But wouldn’t it be braver to cast a Carrie who risks being unlovable, seeing as how the character actually is unpopular within her tale? I want Todd Solondz to do the next remake, which, given the way the business works now, will probably be in like three years.
