Doctor Who Is Powerless Against the Might of Yakkity Sax (and Eminem, For Some Reason)

Posted at 4:07 PM Aug 08, 2008

Assumably lovely TR commenter Jennifer just left this link as a comment on the Lamest Doctor Who Villains daily list from a couple of weeks ago, but I had to share it with the rest of the class. It's clips of Doctor Who set to the surprisingly applicable Benny Hill theme, a.k.a "Yakkity Sax"—but with Eminem rapping over it for no discernible reason whatsoever. Who fans—I don't begrudge you your franchise at all, but I hope none of you are fooling yourselves that Doctor Who isn't goofy as all hell. This fan video is proof positive, and I'm pretty sure would stand up in a court of law.

P.S.—It should be noted if anyone sends me any fan videos set to "Yakkity Sax," I will almost certainly put it on TR. I have a weakness. See you on Monday, folks.

That was great. I loved the old and new Dr. Who. For me it was always a treat to see it as a kid because it came on at 11pm CST on Sundays in Chicago. So the only way I could see it was if we had Monday's off. Setting some of the goofier DW villians and scenes agains Yakkity-Sax was brilliant. Good job, thanks for making me chuckle.

It's odd. Looking back over my childhood, my life, my obsessions with the SCI-FI genre puts everything into perspective. The cheesy sets and low-budget terrors, the suspense until next week and the triumphant victory over the forces of darkness. Most of all...

just how many of these women would I bone?

I have to seriously wonder just how much "old" Doctor Who or "new" Doctor Who you have seen. Half of that video footage was taken from New Doctor Who and the reviled 90's Fox TV movie Doctor Who.

You know? The one that was made to appeal to American Sci-Fi fans and was so bloody awful Terrance Dicks had to write an entire book just to explain away all the inconsistencies once the BBC decided that despite all the problems, the movie WOULD be canon and McGann WOULD be the 8th Doctor despite the fan protests?

That's some funny shizzle going on there. Eminem adds a touch of class to the whole thing. On the geekier side of things, did I only count 1 clip from Colin Baker's era? Shocking. Also, how many times have giant tenticles (that's TENTICLES)wrapped themselves around peoples necks in 'Who'? Seems like a lot.

I think few Doctor Who fans disliked McGann as the Doctor. Most agree he was phenomenal and clamor for him to appear in the new series. If the BBC had decided he didn't count, it would have been a real shame. Thankfully, they were smart. And some of the Brits were just pissy that America "threatened" to take Doctor Who away from them. Aside from a few mistakes (like the Doctor claiming he was half human) the TV Movie was very good.

Anyway, yes, Doctor Who is goofy as hell. But it's a lot of fun. Great video.

Eh, I wouldn't call it goofy. Not after reading a number of the novellisations. Sure, the costumes are cheap, but there's nothing wrong with that, unless you buy into the American ethic of throwing money at something until it becomes entertaining. The majority of the episodes of the older series were (somewhat) intelligently written and acted out, with plenty of breathing space and subtle intellectual pondering. That's the problem with the new series, it sees Doctor Who as little more than television cheese and the writers don't seem to care a bit about the effort and intelligence put into the orginal series.

I love the new Doctor Who, having never seen anything in earlier Doctor Who series that made me want to watch it. As an amrican, I tend to throw money at things until they entertain me (strippers, dancing midgets), so the low-budget cheese really is off-putting. I mean, I love the Hitchhiker's Guide, but I can barely watch the old TV series. (Or the new movie, but that's a different story.)

But even on the new Doctor Who show, the effects seem cheesy sometimes, especially the CGI. Maybe I've been spoiled by American effects, or maybe it's a difference in aesthetic. I still love it, but the weird thing is that the show makes me feel nostalgia for the original show, a show I've never watched.
