Director of the Universe?

I hate posting uncredited news stories from websites that don't name their sources, but Latino Review has just been too damn accurate to dismiss. At any rate, they're saying that not only is the Masters of the Universe movie not dead, but it just acquired a director in John Stevenson, who just helmed Kung Fu Panda. I didn't see Kung Fu Panda, but it got near unanimous great reviews, so if this is true I imagine it's a very good thing. No one seems to know if he'll use Justin Marks nerd-acclaimed script, but I've got my fingers crossed. .

Nerd hope springs eternal, doesn't it? Sigh. I'm guessing the only people who are happier than I am are the execs at Mattel, who are probably hitting the bars early today in celebration of massive potential sales for 2010.

The main obstacle I'm seeing with this film is going to be costumes. Seriously. Look at those things.

YES!!! YES!!! A new MOTU movie will be great. 80's cartoon costumes may cause a little problem, but if they go with the 2002 cartoon costume they could pull it off easily. Even if they went for the original movie costumes I'd be happy. 2010...not only a Thundercats animated movie and toys but now a MOTU movie and toys, I hope Mattel gets the rights to Thundercats and that the new Thunderctas and MOTU movie toys are the same scale as DCU and MOTU Classics. Is the MOTU movie going to be live action or animation? As much as I would like a live action I wouldn't be against an animation in the same style as the 2002 cartoon....then perhaps Mateel could re-release the 2002 series and make it easier to get the other figures instead of just He-Man or Skeletor.

I'm just hoping we get to see Mer-Man and TrapJaw this time around.

If this movie is executive-produced by Michael Bay, I will bomb the universe (and all the Masters in it)

It did not occur to me until looking at this image today that none of the main characters in this show wear pants.

Unless you count Orko, I guess.

HMMMM...I didn't see Kung Fu Panda either, but intend to, because it looks very good. Now that this guy is onboard, I'm starting to think maybe Mattel is thinking Beowulf-esque CGI MoCap for this. It would be cheaper than building Greyskull and Snake Mountain as sets, you wouldn't need a costuming department, and you could have as many Beast-Man beast-henchmen as you could possibly want. AND it fits the director's background if it's 'animated'. This is a big, huge SFX extravaganza, I can't see them not doing MoCap or 300-style green screen with actors. But if you do the MoCap, you don't have to worry about which actor to hire--you can make him as buff as you want.

Accordingly, if they do go that route, I don't think Justin Mark's script would quite fit. But I could be wrong.

Kung Fu Panda was, as CGI kids movies go, pretty good, but what really stood out for me was how amazing the action sequences were. Assuming they can find a good balance between the goofy costumes and nothing but boring armour, this could be amazing. I grew up a bit after the 80's cartoon, so I'm not completely familiar with the more obscure elements, but it still has potential to be an awesome movie, as long as they don't include Stinkor.

Also, I'm still waiting for a Jayce & the Wheeled Warriors movie. That would be sweet.

I'm a die hard MotU fan, but I'm dead against this movie ever being made.

Making toys based on a movie is always hit and miss. As much as I would love a movie and be able to go and buy the toys etc...I am just reminded of the bunch of awful Transformers Movie toys. Fare info there was couple of good toys but, like Godzilla 97 aka GINO a lot of characters were in name only. I would prefer an animated movie as its less expensive and more potential for good character designs and costumes.

Friginator said:

Actually, that was Godzilla 98. Also, I've seen tons of great movie toys, especially this past year.

Mark said:

Actual action figures have been great the past couple of years but the Transformers movie toys were not accurate and were not very good toys to be displayed or played with. Although (the exception) Leader Class Optimus Prime is great, if only the other figures had been up to the same stanrds of quality I would have more than one Transformers movie toy.
