GiantAlienSquidGate: The Final Chapter

I wasn’t even going to post this, since I find it so…so…so not Giant Alien Squid-worthy, but since so many of you have emailed me about it, I figured I’d better say something: The Squid is in Watchmen. But not really. CHUD got the “scoop” from director Zack Snyder.

In the film Adrian Veidt and Dr. Manhattan are working together on a
project that will replicate Manhattan’s energy, providing free and
unlimited power to the world. That project? SQUID, the logo for which
is briefly visible.

“I’m glad you caught that,” Zack said when I complimented him on getting the squid in the movie. And what does SQUID stand for? “Sub QUantum Intrinsic Device.”

So there’s just a thing named Squid. I don’t think that counts, at all, in the tiniest degree, but if it makes you folks happy, more power to you. However, this does make me vaguely worried that the SQUID device will be connected to the disaster, and if Veidt is known to be working on it, I’m even more skeptical of how it will effectively replace our pal Giant Alien Squid.

Oh. And while I’m talking about Watchmen (yet again), I feel I need to clarify something from yesterday: I called that scene between Rorschach and Nite Owl awkward, and many of you have pointed out that the scene is supposed to be awkward. I realize that. Clearly, I didn’t explain myself well (or at all). My problem with the scene is that it’s awkwardly acted; Nite Owl’s “outburst” seems really forced and shallow, as does Rorschach’s sudden apology. And the staging — with Nite Owl’s march over to Rorschach and back to his ship, then Rorschach’s hop down and pose-striking hand shake — it makes me think of a mediocre stage production. Basically, the acting is just really, really apparent to me in that scene, and that’s why I find it awkward. Again, it may work fine as a part of the whole, or it may be the lack of camera movement that’s throwing me. But one thing I hadn’t planned on worrying about during Watchmen was the acting.
