Here's an idea I'm shocked no one's had before -- subtitling R2-D2's beeps and whistles. As this montage from The Phantom Menace shows, Artoo is one bitter, mean-spirited bastard, although he has plenty of reason to be. Definitely make sure you watch him meeting C-3PO for the first time, as it turns out this little droid had the most sensible reaction of anyone after meeting a shambling, nude and potentially gay droid. Thanks to Skeletor for the tip.

Heh, I had forgotten how awful JarJar is. Now, remembering, the fear returns. Blech.
-
Boss Nass is holding up the Life Day orb from the Holiday Special.
-
Jar Jar is a fucking cockblock, Artoo rules

If you guys feel a youtube video owes you "jokes" instead of "curse words", you're welcome to try it out. Humor is hard. Subtitles are not.

It reminded me a bit of the Darth & Droids online comic (or whatever you call it): http://www.darthsanddroids.net/ The premise is a bunch of guys are role playing Darth & Droids. In their world there is no Star Wars movies. If you have yet to see it, start at the very beginning. The person playing Jar Jar actually makes him a fun character. :D

You'll all call bullshit, but I actually thought of doing this years ago. Just never bothered. I'm glad someone finally did, but I'm disappointed that it was some Frat Boy with a limited vocabulary. I'm with Zero Corpse on this one. Had it been written in character, and not as if R2 were the Jock Douche in a "College Movie" I might have gotten past the halfway mark. And now that I think about it, if they haven't already made College Movie, they will now. Someone always steals my shitty ideas...

I have always believed that Artoo is a smartass and swears like a sailor. This was awesome, thank you so much. I'm gonna spread it around. (I think Pikachu does the same thing. Wouldn't you?)
-
Damnit, it's because Lucas was racist towards us droids. That's why he didn't give us subtitles. My planned Droid Revolution failed... I would been able to get revenge against Lucas and all biological meatbags!
-
I agree with ZeroCorpse, too many curses and not enough jokes. I would have liked Episode 1 a lot better if these subs were in it...wow that was a bad movie!! Reminded me of MST3K; Take a bad movie and make it funny!
-
There seems to be a second one as well on the same Youtube account; focusing on Attack of the Clones. With that said, I liked this a lot. Very funny, reminds me of the strip "Darths and Droids."
-
I recall some meme or something (maybe a drinking game) where you just always automatically assumed R2 was making a smartass comment. It made the movies so much more fun to watch.
-
Funny stuff. I can't believe I actually forgot how god awful Jake Lloyd's acting was.

The only characters that everyone loves are R2D2, Bobo Fett and Darth Mallll. Why? They don't have to recite Lucus's horrible dialogue. This was funny, but it does not make up for the fact that there is so much that I hate about that movie that I can hardly watch it. Side note: In the final scene, is that one of those bombs from the earlier battle that the Gundan king is holding? Why did he bring that? Was he finally going to kill Jar-Jar? We can only hope.

Thanks for posting this, man! It made my day. :D If I may suck up for a moment, I love the site and appreciate you running it.

This has to be one of the best things I've seen in a long time! Thanks! I'm crying here! "It should have been you." Thank you god!

This is nothing new. Teenage boys have been doing this since 10 years ago when I was still a teen and my friends and I took turns translating Artoo's dialogue ala Mystery Science Theater 3000. I suspect, however, it's been going on longer than that.

I dunno. It had moments, but when guys do this sort of thing and have to toss in as many fucks, motherfuckers, shits, goddamns, and out-of-universe references as possible to make a joke, it loses its charm. I'd be impressed if he could come up with funny lines that actually stay in character, without the swearing. Anybody can do cuss-humor. I've no problem with swearing, mind you, but I just think it's a weak device in this context. He could have picked anything for R2 to say, and he just fell back on some rough language to make the majority of the jokes. It comes off as being sort of dimwitted and juvenile, to my ears. However, on a related note, I've often said that everybody would totally accept (maybe even like) Jar-Jar if he spoke an alien language (in a lower voice; Not Ahmed Best's) and they subtitled him. I'm certain it was the voice and pidgin English that made people hate him. By letting the actor who modeled his actions do the voice, George violated the rule that made Darth Vader so cool. If David Prowse's voice had been used for Darth Vader, Star Wars would never have been popular. Why they never subtitled R2 in the movies is an interesting question. Every other non-Basic speaker was subtitled, but not droids. It's like there's this law that droids, being property, don't deserve their own subtitles.

I have a feeling this has been done before, just not on YouTube.

"It should have been you" That is good stuff!
-
lol . always wondered what r2d2 would sound like if his beeps were in English . and nice to see he does not like Jar jar either. that and so much for r2 considering c3peo his best fried
-
Seconded. Also, I never noticed that the fake Queen Amidala orders the real Queen Amidala to go clean a droid. It was probably the real Amidala's idea, but wouldn't it be funny if it wasn't?
-
This makes me feel completely justified in saying that R2D2 is my favourite character.
-
Priceless!
-
Haha! I always had a feeling the R2D2 or Sir Reginald Droidworth III was a smart ass. This just makes me have so much more respect for that little droid.
