David Eddings, 1932-2009

Fantasy writer David Eddings passed on June 2nd at the age of 77. He was best known for his five-part Belgariad and Mallorean sagas, which I must have read 50 times (I think I read the Elenium and Tamuli about 30). His plots were as standard as they come, but man, his characters and his dialogue were wonderful — I spent most of my extra nerdy youth wishing I could hang out with Garion and Belgarath and Silk and the rest. I actually cried when I got to the end of the Seeress of Kell, just because I was so upset that the story was over.

I can’t begin to describe how much joy Eddings’ books gave to me in my youth, and still today. He wrote fantasy in the truest sense — books so inviting we could practically live in them. Thank you, Mr. Eddings.
