I normally don't do this, but with the announcement that Universal won the rights to make a feature film based on the classic videogame Asteroids -- and by classic I mean impossibly shallow -- in a goddamn bidding war with three other studios (!), I'm just going to quote FilmDrunk, because he said it better than I could.
A F*CKING BIDDING WAR. For a movie based on three dots that shoot one dot at other small clusters of dots. If you can think of anything stupider than this... someone in Hollywood will pay you a lot of money. GREAT NEWS, EVERYONE, TOM CRUISE JUST SIGNED ON TO PLAY BLINKING LIGHT NUMBER FOUR! SOMEONE FINGER MY ASSHOLE SO I KNOW I'M NOT DREAMING!These are the end times, my friends. It's all downhill from here. By which I mean someone's eventually going to make a movie of Oink!.

Wasn'tt his Armageddon? (er...no pun intended) Or does that not count because they weren't shooting the asteroids?
Anyway, it's all meaningless to me until a studio signs on for Lunar Lander (sponsored by McDonalds!).

I think they should go the Doom route and make a sequence entirely made up to look like the video game… in 3D. I know asteroids would kick ass in 3D, look at that picture above! I tell you! It’s GENIUS!!!

I CALLED IT!
Anyone who doubts can look back through TR history, or even further back on AICN, to find my starter script for ASTEROIDS starring Christopher Walken!!!
And Chapka:
I also did a script for Burger Time, also starring Christopher Walken as Mr. Pickle (or was it Mr. Egg?). That, too, is further back in TR history and on AICN, FARK, and a few other places.

I can totally see just making a sci-fi film wherein at some point they save the planet from a space menace and slapping the name on it. But in that case, why even bother with the licensing? There's no way they could ever get you for story infringement upon the Asteroid franchise just because someone in your film happens to shoot at an asteroid.
This leaves the only conclusion that for some reason, someone out there wants to make a completely accurate representation of this game. And that's just wrong.

Let Michael Bay direct. It will get him away from Transformers and he can throw in all the explosions and fart jokes he wants.

I don't know if mass audiences are ready for this. I always found the plot of Asteroids a bit contrived and hard to follow, much like the Metal Gear storylines.
Best to keep it as simple as possible, like the new Transformers movie.
We don't want to confuse the millions of fucking retards that flood theaters and apparently make up a good chunk of society.
Lord knows the Asteroids writing was better than ROTF, as I don't recall an asteroid heaven.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Nicolas Cage, and Jackie Chan in "Rock, Paper, Scissors: The Final Reckoning".
George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Quentin Tarantino ARE "Tic, Tac, Toe" With Angelina Jolie, Megan Fox, and Jennifer Aniston as the exes who make you say "Ooooo".
RuPaul and Perez Hilton as Licorice Jones and Billy Gumdrop in "Candyland: Adventures in the Chocolate Hole".
Walter Matthau and Glenda Jackson in "Hopscotch". Wait a minute...that one was real.

Well atleast this way there's no way for them to change and mess up the story of the original game (because there ISN'T any) and so the writers can actually focus on making a good story
I'm still waiting for a movie for Tetris :/

What, no centipede or frogger films? Oh wait... they could actually make a stupid film from frogger, and it would probably be in 3D for maximum squished frog effect. Sad.
