Holy shit. Dan Didio announced a new Batman Beyond comic mini-series for next year.
That. Is. Awesome.
Do I even need to say anything more? Probably not; there are very few nerds that can find a reason to dislike Bruce Timm and Paul Dini's animated Batman series, and Batman Beyond became pretty much the perfect epilogue for Bruce Wayne's crimefighting career. It created its own fascinating world for future Batman Terry McGinnis, while building on the original Batman mythos in consistently awesome ways. You know, if it came down to the entirety of the DC universe ending with Kingdom Come or letting Batman drift into Batman Beyond and taking the rest of the DCU with him, I'll take Batman Beyond every time. Nice Syd Mead Blade Runner-esque cityscape in the very beginning of the clip!

I'd totally buy this. I hated the whole concept of Batman Beyond until I actually watched it- seeing the pilot ep had me hooked. A very, very solid series.

I cannot wait

"The only redesign I ever approved was Poison Ivy, and that's it." Scarecrow? Penguin? Bruce Wayne actually wearing a suit that didn't look like something your grandfather would wear to a wedding? Catwoman basically turning into the Darwyn Cooke version? The Joker redesign didn't work, sure, but there were more hits than misses, as it turned out. Especially that Scarecrow redesign, which is a brilliant look and I'm upset that he rarely actually showed up after that.

Cool news. I loved BB. I, for one, appreciated that Terry was a very different Batman to Bruce. That's what made him ineteresting.
-
I liked the old animated Series. But shit started to suck as they stopped making awesome cartoons and switched them to cheap anime with a horrible redesign. The only redesign I ever approved was Poison Ivy, and that's it.
-
Geoff> I think he said it was supposed to be Terry, but never got fixed. I'd love to slap whoever screwed that up.

I bash the hell out of DC yesterday, and then today they announce something like this. I luvs me some Batman Beyond, but PLEASE let it be written by Dini or McDuffy, have a decent art team, and NOTHING to do with the current DC Continuity. Hell...why not just bring back the guys who did the original BB comic? I seem to recall it being pretty awesome....
-
This news has me utterly stoked such that I probably can't help but be disappointed by the final result. Nevertheless, I'll enjoy my sky-high expectations. Here's a treat I found for the BB faithful: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqRATvE-gXo Goosebumps.

Wow, after YEARS of teasing (specifically, Loeb sneaking Tim Drake into the Beyond suit in Superman / Batman) they finally just went ahead and did it. And, really, is there any question about who's going to be writing this with McDuffie having been fired off JLA? Dini's probably already trying to figure out if he can work a future Zatanna into the mix. Again, a perfectly rational, tempered move from DC. Holy shit, this might actually be a trend!
-
Just tell me a new cartoon series also comes with this bit of awesome new news? Batman Beyond was the perfect advancement of the BM legacy...JLU did the series some serious JUSTICE with the revelation that Bruce Wayne was really Terry McGinnis' dad...Terry was an awesome Batman, so I pray WB will greenlight a new BB series in addition to the comic...
-
I don't usually buy comics, but I'm enough a fan of Batman Beyond that I'll pretty much have to pick up this one.

I have long been hoping for Batman Beyond to become a part of the DC comics universe, outside of the animated tie-in comics they had a while back. I am 100% with you on this, Rob. Beyond > Kingdom Come. I am glad this is finally coming to fruition, but I hope they do it right. I hope they don't adhere to slavishly to the cartoon, as that was a different universe; I don't think using Tim Drake would work for the RotJ story, for example (Damien, maybe? I bet few would object). But I'd really love to see the origin and stories rebuilt from scratch, to fit the comic universe. I don't mean heavy-handedly redoing everything for the sake of it, but make things fit with the continuity and perhaps be able to do/show more than a Saturday morning cartoon on Kids' WB (albeit a very awesome one) would allow. And hopefully, they won't skip right into a "he's already Batman" scenario right from the get-go. I want to see this Beyond's origin, and be able to watch Terry grow into the role again. In the animated series, I think he was pretty much there in in JLU: Epilogue. Oh, and at some point, I definitely want a team-up of Terry and Bruce in his prime. We almost got that in JLU, but it was overshadowed by the whole time plot; the two really didn't do much together, least of all fight alongside one another except in the grander scheme.

Schway.

As a 33 year old watching 'eggbaby' for the first time just a few weeks ago, I laughed out loud like half a dozen times. Good series; that reminds me I still have season 3 to get through.

As a kid, I really wanted to get into Batman Beyond (I thought the concept was kind of cool), but couldn't because Terry just wasn't Batman enough for me. In fact, he was more like Iron Man. Only not quite as intelligent, because he didn't even make his own suit, so maybe War Machine is a more accurate comparison. I mean, aside from his hi-tech armor that practically granted him superpowers, he had no detective skills, no ability to instill fear, no massive intellect, wasn't even a very independent person (relied on Bruce for EVERYTHING). He was just a puppet. Bruce could have just picked almost any guy off the street who was in decent (not great either, just decent) physical shape, willing to take orders and the guy would be just as good. I don't get all the Terry love. But hey, the comic might be interesting.

Heh heh heh! NEEET. My 5-year-old loves Batman Beyond, and although the aforementioned "The Eggbaby" is her favorite episode, she loves Mad Stan episodes, too ("BLOW IT ALL UP!"). I disagree with you, Krutz; I propose that "Arsenal" was a weaker episode, if only because it was kind of hard to care about him (Arsenal). I mean, yeah, fuzzy end of the lollipop and so on, but...ehhh, just not that engaging.
-
I think Batman Beyond was always a good idea, and I watched a few episodes but for some reason, I never could get into it. I think the whole Teenage-Batman plus the Future-Batman was one too many steps removed from the Batman I love. Maybe if Terry were older, I would've embraced it more. Return of the Joker (the uncut version) was awesome thought.
-
The only clunker ep I can recall from "Batman Beyond" was the one where Terry had that baby-simulator egg-thing for a school project (and naturally, he had to crime-fight while carrying it). That said, there were some pretty disturbing (in a cool way) concepts in BB. Anyone remember the asian kids who gave themselves cybernetic implants (the guy with the saws in his joints was pretty whacked out, especially when he got taken apart). And the ultimate fate of Bane was a pretty chilling concept.

nice to see dc not letitng terry fade into limbo. given how cool and well liked the show was. can not wait to find out who will have the task of doing the comic . and nice to see terry being active in the dc universe again and not in limbo
-
Excellent, BB or Batman of the future as they retagged it for some bizarre reason in Europe was one of those shows I always loved. Fingers crossed for a good writer! P.s. ROTJ was brilliant. At least the pg-13 version.
-
Possibly great news, depending on who the creative team is. I always enjoyed Beyond as a different "flavor" of Batman.
-
@ GUMBERCULES!: Ya know, you're right. I am actually getting sick of writing nasty stuff on here all the time here. It actually begins to drain you and take the fun out of future discussions. Thx for the added link. That looks like a cool site.
-
YES!! This is the best news ever. As for the theme song, it gets better every time you see it.
-
You really don't think the animation sucks? I've never understood this style.
-
I always liked this series and this concept. There are certainly things that I wish they wouldn't have done, Tim Drake got the short end of the stick, but over all it had a lot of room to grow. I thought as far as bruce wayne goes this was the perfect epiloge. Terry was a good character and had almost an early peter parker feel to him. I agree he was not fear inspiring but that is something he could grow into. And as far as batman beyond being kid oriented I thought it was pretty dark for its time
-
Terry did go invisible occasionally, so there was that fear element to him, I guess. Plus he was a different Batman to Bruce, so he could be his own character as opposed to just copying Bruce. Like how he defeated the Joker in ROTJ by acting like himself instead of just giving him the silent treatment like how Bruce did.

@darkmagician66699: Just try using the compliment sandwich, or try to find something positive about every subject. When I write reviews over at http://www.articulateddiscussion.com/ I try to find something nice to say about each item. My early reviews were always negative. One of my positive reviews won me a figure the same week I won a Topless Robot t-shirt. Just keep trying. It might be worth it...

I can't see the video, since I'm at work, but I liked Batman Beyond, save one exception: Terry McGinnis was never able to inspire fear in his enemies. Without that fear element, he is just a guy in a costume that no one will think twice about before taking a shot at him. No matter how cool the suit or the gadgets, some villain will do better, so without that fear, you're dead. In Terry's case, it made him the human punching bag. My favorite line from Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns was when Batman said to himself, "The last one left always panics." That element was completely absent in Batman Beyond.
-
This was a great preview to suck in a new/existing audience. Looks cool to me and I have never been a big Batman Beyond fan. It's kinda like that whole Marvel 2099 series they did. I hated those. But that's just me, Mr. Inflexible. Someone should start calling me "Bones" McCoy since I think about the negative side all the time.
-
I'm not so keen on the idea. It might be decent, but i certainly don't want them trying to tie it into the DC universe any more than the kid-oriented, animated-series-based comic series. Honestly though, i just hate batman beyond because of what they did with tim drake.
-
I love DC, but I will reserve my judgement until the writer and artist are announced. But this is a step in a great direction!
