Good news, everybody! We won't be dragged into a war with Japan, as the nation has bowed to international pressure and begun disassembling the giant, 60-foot-tall Gundam statue in Odaiba. It would have been a war we couldn't possible win, given Japan's... you know, GIANT 6O-FOOT-TALL GUNDAM, but also its endless supply of overemotional, insecure teenagers to pilot it.
In all honesty, I'm sad they're taking it down. Given how popular it was there and on the nettertubes of the entire world, it seems everybody would have preferred it remain. Surely Bandai, owners of all things Gundam, would love to have a permanent display of Gundam's popularity on show like that. I wonder who made who take it down? Alas. (Via Alt Japan)

They honestly can't covertly transport the whole thing fully assembled to our shores, now can they? Expect many multi-storied warehouses to pop up in our major metropolitan areas, many large box shipments, and lots of assembly sounds heard in the middle of the night. That will be the precursor to the invasion.

I hope this doesn't deter DARPA's "Project Zaku." I totally have this really cool helmet and mask, and I love the color red.

The Japanese probably got scared. It was only a matter of time before some Twilight fans built a sparkling Ed statue somewhere in the american midwest. And we all know not even a Gundam can't defeat such a monster.

I blame Zeon. When Char was denied the use of the ISS, and thus, the chance of dropping something into Sydney, they swore revenge.
And if Bandai like the Gundam to stay, well, they can re-bulid it in their property. But manteniance would be quite expensive.

Are we sure they're just taking it down and not upgrading it with even more ridiculous weapons? It is a Gundam, after all....

You're right, Kitro. That's pretty much what the robot looks like at the end of Gundam 0080 (a.k.a. the Best Gundam Series).

I suspect that late at night, the Gundam was beating his sword into a plowshare, if you know what I mean.

Aww. I wanted my pic on top of it's head.
Note to the Japanese: if you don't want it, it would look great outside our town hall.

Almost every time Gundams get destroyed in the shows, it's just a precursor to a bigger, more dangerous Gundam being built. We all heave a sigh of relief and turn our eyes distrustingly towards Omaha and the Twilight cornfields, never knowing that the Japanese are even now upgrading, honing, and advancing their new model for the war to come.

Actually that's what the Gundam looked like in one of the most famous shots from the original series, when it was shooting at Char. Right before it got completely wasted.

I vote Bandai takes a cue from the French and sets up the Gundam statue proudly on a pedestal near the harbor of either Seattle or L.A.
It's about time the west coast gets something half as iconic as the Statue of Liberty.

They had always said that they were going to take it down because of tsunami season. I think they were planning to move it somewhere else, but I have no idea where. I can't imagine they'll just keep it in storage forever.

...Can someone do me a favor and explain to me *exactly* what the term "Gundam" means, and what it's origins are? From what I've been able to find out using Google, the best guesses have been that it's either a condensing of "Gun Dam", meaning a construction upon which a lot of guns are mounted, or it's like the name "Jeep", where nobody's really sure where the term really came from, or what the etymology of the word is, only that "Jeep" either means a 4-wheeled Aaaaarmy vehicle and/or a cute little magical character for Popeye to fuck around with when Olive is on the rag and his Spinach has been confiscated by the DEA.

From what I can remember it was short for "gundanium alloy". The type of metal the gundam was made from.

I saw the Gundam! It was awesome!! A few people thought the moment so holy they had to dab away tears.
This Gundam was based on the original from 1979. I think Gundam means Gunnery United Nuclear Deutrion Advanced Maneuver.
