This is a spy photo from the set of The Karate Kid remake The Kung Fu Kid. That is indeed Jackie Chan in the Mr. Miyagi role, complete with a very unsettling mustache, and Will Smith's kid Jaden as Daniel (or whatever his name will be in the movie). I'm really torn here. I loved the original Karate Kid like most people born before 1980, but it's hardly to integral to my youth that I can muster my normal virulence about a remake. Honestly, it's probably not a bad idea, because all kids love kung fu shit. On the other hand, I look at this picture and I think about Pat Morita and sweeping the leg and it just makes me sad and confused and a little nauseous. What do you guys think? (Via Twitch)

Hmmm ... Actually what scares me is what's next ... will they try to remake the Goonies! the Lost Boys outside of that DVD sequel? Stop the madness, please!
-
Considering they're going to try and remake the Buffy movie sans Whedon, Alien being remade by Scott himself, and countless others ... it just shows Hollwood is out of ideas. I can only hope that it will spark interest in the original and that people will enjoy it as much if not more than this. Still, it's kind of scary that Hollywood seems to really want to rape so many fine films!
-
this will be far superior merely because it focusses on kung-fu instead,.. karate is, was and will always be ass
-
"Taffy said: THAT'S JACKIE CHAN!?! He looks terrible!" Doing all your own stunts for ~40 years can't be easy on your body, plus the dude is pushing 60 after all...
-
@ Taladrea "Can Jackie Chan fill the shoes that Pat Morita once stood in?" OMFG are you even remotely serious? Have you ever even seen a Jackie Chan movie? anyway, @ all the haters, I'd say this flick is more inspired by katrate kid than remaking it. fuck, the title alone should clue you in. :P
-
i don't know...it may be a hit or whatever when it comes out but this is not Karate kid in any way, the Japanese touch is gone and now it will be Chinese and for the sequel they will have to go to china.... i got tired of china watching so many crappy war epics to the point that i don't wanna see it for a while and less in karate kid. About will smith son...well anyone could fill that part, lucky for him his daddy is rich and at-least he can act....somehow ps- 2012...the annunaki lizard men will come to steal our souls and those who survive the dragon empire wont have to endure remakes.... plus side!
-
The Jackie Chan fan in me says "Go see it on the first night!" But the rational side says "Jackie Chan or not, this movie has Will Smith's kid in it. Wait til it comes on DVD, copy it, and just watch the parts with Jackie Chan in it." You win, Rational Side.
-
I'll watch it on one condition: Jackie Chan kicks the kids ass, and then goes on to do all the fancy martial arts stuff. Because without that, it's a total waste.
-
I'm not recognising this as a remake. It is a new franchise that has nothing to do with the original Karate Kid.
-
I'll repeat what I said the first time I read this: If they wanted to actually be relevant, this would be called The MMA Kid.
-
No wait...Take it to the limit was Scarface. "You're The Best Around". THAT'S the montage I want to see.
-
If they throw in a montage playing "Take It To The Limit", then you can put me down for 1 ticket.
-
People correct me if I'm mistaken, but isn't karate Japanese? And kung-fu Chinese? Confession--I've never seen the original, but it seems weird to change something that major.
-
@ Taladrea I remember that Mr. Seaquest was in Sidekicks. What I did not realize, however, is that he passed away. That's pretty sad.
-
you don't have to be born before 1980 to like the karate kid.. Karate Kid was prominent throughout the 80s. So being born early to mid 80s, you can enjoy yourself some daniel-son. that said.. i will not be lining up for a remake of the karate kid.. Neverending Story tho.. that could be fun again. :P

he's using bamboo to teach the motions of kung fu, also elp build wrist strength, god has no one sen jacki chan in drunken master?

Pat Morita will forever be my Mr. Miyagi of choice. <3

I've seen the original 3 Karate Kid movies (I refuse to acknowledge the existence of the 4th, be it as it may that I did see it) even though I was born in '81. The fact that I am still appauld over the fact that they are remaking another American classic is still there. But, I am happy with the name change and to hear that its a not a complete rip off (thus far) of the classic. Only concerns that I have now are; Can Jackie Chan fill the shoes that Pat Morita once stood in? Are they going to redo the original soundtrack and score? And are we going to see a cameo appearance by Mr. Will Smith himself? @Hachiko: Sidekicks also had Jonathan Brandis (R.I.P.) in it for us ladies to enjoy.
-
Am I the only one worried about Will Smith releasing a Rap version of Kung Fu Fighting? (That is if he even remembers how to rap.) I'm curious about Kung Fu Kid part 2... Will Jet Li play The Chinese Counterpart to Sato? Or will it be Chow Yun Fat?

I understand the trepidation people feel when a movie they love gets remade. But remakes, sequels and re-interpretations have been happening as long as stories have been told. Not even getting into things like Shakespeare plays, and historical or mythological stories that get made over and over, there are plenty of remakes that people love. Sometimes so much that they forget they were remakes in the first place; The Wizard of Oz, Scarface, The Fly, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Maltese Falcon, Ben Hur, The Thing, His Girl Friday. And that's just the big ones-I personally loved the remake of The Blob and The House on Haunted Hill. And even American remakes of foreign films and vice-versa are sometimes great. Hell, Hitchcock remade one of his own movies, The Man Who Knew Too Much. ... That said, yeah Kung Fu Kid is probably gonna suck.
-
Jacki looks like my dad in the picture, hahaha. I suppose I will try to be open minded, but come on, can't tarnish the real Mr. Myagi do karate. Hopefully not a true remake in the sense of the ward but Moreau reimagining of the idea of the story.
-
Maybe they're changing the story around a little bit. Maybe the end of this remake will have Will Smith's son become....Black Belt Jones! I'd definitely pay money to see that....
-
I can muster up virulence for ANY remake!
-
He is doing the training that was done in Drunken Boxer. Personally, I don't get all the hate, at least not at this point. I say give it ti-hahaha, who am I kidding? Rage on, internet.

Joe J got it right. The odd man out at high school vs. the local bullies set the background, the motivation, in the original. Look at the pic, the kid's hair is all done up, the clothes are trendy, I bet they'll order that not one scene be shot where he doesn't look 'cool'. As least Macchio wasn't afraid to look the 'sore thumb sticking' out part. This movie will be lame even stacked against 'Sidekicks'. At least that had Winnie Cooper in it to fap to. Oh, and $10 says that while the new titular character is African-American, the bullies will be white.
-
Will Smith vanity project-by-proxy.
-
Three Ninjas. 'Nuff said.
-
For those who remember the original fondly, like me... Don't know if anyone has ever seen it, but this post reminded me about it. It's worth watching all 8min of the video, for all the cameos. http://www.sweeptheleg.com/

All you have to do is look at all the God-awful, utterly unwatchable crap that Hollywood churns out every week, each month, year after year...of course all the studios have begun to remake previously proven box office earners. It's not a new problem either, the state of American filmmaking is in the shitter and completely backasswards. Big studios keep writing mind-boggling checks to guys like Bay, Shyamalan and Christ save us all...Mark Steven Johnson, while half of us refuse to support the fresh, up and coming artists in the industry by taking in an independent film now and then. If I were sitting in a corner office at some studio, I wouldn't take a chance on any new ideas, when dozens of easy money remakes are crossing my desk every month.

A potential reason to remake the original: martial arts fight choreography of the early 80's was WAY behind what kids these days are used to seeing. And I approved of the new name as well, as Kung Fu represent a much wider array of eastern martial arts than Karate [which in the 80's had become generic for All That Asian Fighting Stuff, when it's technically a narrow sample] But, yeah, the kid being *that* young makes me think of Surf Ninjas or whatever the hell those horrible rip-offs were. And how's there supposed to be a love interest or anything on the side? Oh, that's right, kids are getting knocked up at 10 these days...
-
THAT'S JACKIE CHAN!?! He looks terrible!
-
you can't blame the kid for being a little punk though. he's at that age where he doesn't give a shit about anyone. we all acted that way because we thought we knew everything there is to know. that's why i think they're going with a younger actor because kids are growing up a lot faster than they did in 1980. also i freaking love Jackie Chan. he could be a little older for the role but maybe they're thinking of having some sequels, just like the original. and another thing....having an asian guy teaching an african american could lead to some race relations stuff that seems to be a hot-button issue with both races. they pretty much hate each other! so imagine the tension in every scene between the two..........actually i'm having a hard time seing jackie chan being racist, but i still have high hopes.
-
I'm actually really pissed about this. There's literally no reason to remake this movie (much like many of the other films being remade), but I'm pretty sure I know why it happened. Will Smith probably showed the original to his kid on "movie night" in the Smith home, and his son said, "I wanna be Daniel-san..."
-
I just kind of hate that Smith kid. He was in the remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still and he just came off as a condescending little punk. It was part of his character, but I got the impression it was partly his personality because even after the character lightened up and stopped being an ass, he still seemed like an ass. Stupid nepotism.
-
any movie with a young child in this setting is going to be crap, with stupid lines and just annoyances the entire time having it be Will Smiths kid makes it worse because he just got the part because of who his dad is I however will not care beyond this post because, after this I will see a trailer for it roll my eyes and say everytime how stupid it looks
-
at least it doesn't have Hilary Swank in it. ... OR WILL IT
-
This stuff really drives me nuts and puts me into a fit of nerd rage. Here's the thing, why would you create a remake of a film, when there is nothing to improve on? Actually I know the answer. Money. I can understand remaking a film if you feel you can improve it visually, or improve the acting performances. You know this stuff reminds me of, and I challenge someone to find this video clip for me... but there was a Benny Hill skit where Benny Hill brings some snob a bottle of wine. The snob tastes the wine, shakes his head, "oh no no no, that wine won't do. Bring me another!" So Benny Hill goes back slaps a different label on the same bottle of wine. He returns and the snob is like, "Ah excellent!"
-
Meh. They've made so many remakes of so many films/t.v shows/kabuki plays or whatever that it's only surprising when they *don't* make one. Yeah, it's unnecessary, but it doesn't negate my memories of the original (no more so than the sequels, anyway), and there's no reason to think it will be any better or worse than any other movie that Hollywood craps out.
-
I think Will smith deserves a father of the year award for teaching his kid how to make million dollar movies even if they suck...
-
He just seems too young. One of the best things about the original (I was born in that age bracket you spoke of '76) was the high school drama that went along with the karate stuff. That was why Daniel had to fight, to stand up for himself. I'm not excited. http://www.joeonthetube.com
-
WHOSE RESPONSIBLE THIS???? I'm glad it's called the Kungfu Kid because there will only be one Karate Kid. it's like remaking Star Wars or Raiders.
