Miller is preparing a follow-up now titled "Xerxes," which begins about 10 years before the events of "300," and Snyder has expressed interest in it as a film property as well. "It's the battle of Marathon through my lens," Miller said Wednesday. "I've finished the plot and I'm getting started on the artwork."Miller said he is not surprised Greece is resurgent in Hollywood. "Every generation returns to ancient Greece because, well, the stories are so damn good," said the artist, who also directed last year's "The Spirit." Miller said that during his research trips to Greece he realized that the myth and history overlap begins to blur, which adds to the storytelling allure. "The fact and the myth are inseparable and, believe me, when you go sailing for a while in the Aegean Sea, you start believing in Poseidon."
SHUT UP FRANK MILLER FRANK MILLER SHUT UP. Look, we all know you're making this because of the scads of money you made off of the 300 movie, and because 300 allowed you to make your endearing awful Spirit film. So please don't pretend that it's because you have some grand historical/classic story to tell that only dawned on you a decade later. And shut up about Poseidon, too. If there was a Poseidon, I'd like to think he would have drowned you for wearing that stupid fedora all the time. (Via Robot 6)

Please cease the making of all movies except anything related to Sin City.
Thanks.

Dear Frank Miller,
Don't ever be a director again. Just give your franchises to Robert Rodriguez and Zack Snyder cause they know what they're doing.

Hey hey hey. If you want to piss on Miller, that is your business. But do NOT piss on the fedora. I wear fedoras. Noir movies have guys with fedoras. Hell, Ben 'Yahtzee' Croshaw wears a fedora. You do not want to start telling him his sense of style is bad, less you end up naked in the outback with nothing but fedora on hand having been dumped there by one of his many fans.
But yes, Miller is a toilet.

Thank you! Glad someone spoke up about this. Was just about to defend it myself. Yes, please leave the innocent fedora out of this!
As for Miller? He was great in the 80s and 90s. I'd like to think that if he pulled back a bit and refocused on what he did to get to the top, he'd realize that a BIT of restrain and less over-the-top is what appealed us to his early work, like Daredevil and Batman.

Another Amen to that. The fedora is the freaking coolest hat ever. No shitting on fedoras!

Better that than having to listen to him whine yet again that the NES was shit and the Spectrum was the home of truly great 8-bit games...

As a fedora wearer and collector, I do have to echo the sentiment that Miller sucks, but lay off the fedora. As far as hipster fedoras go, hipsterism is the act of taking something with cultural significance, stripping it of its history, and then acting proud of their ignorance, so their opinions on anything don't really count. Most hipster fedoras aren't really fedoras anyways, they generally look like bavarian alpine hats.

Aaaaaw shit! First Clash of the Titans, now this? So you wanna write about the Battle of Marathon, Miller? I'd sooner see him castrated with a rusty spoon. Stop raping my heritage! I hope Poseidon skewers him. To sum up: ΜΗ ΜΑΛΑΚΙΖΕΙΣ ΜΕ ΤΟΥΣ ΕΛΛΗΝΕΣ, ΦΡΑΝΚ ΜΙΛΛΕΡ!

Tome Minder replied to Zann:
I agree with you totally. I admit to loving 300 but the movie, the graphic novel pissed me off. Only those with genuine love and respect should do anything relating to ancient Greece and the mythology. Zach Snyder loved the story, which is obvious if you see an interview so if this new movie gets done, let HIM direct it. Frank Miller must be stopped before he craps on Greece like The Spirit.
Posted 12/15/2009 at 04:57:34 PM
emaN replied to Tome Minder:
What exactly are you referring to when you guys say he is "crapping all over Greece?" I mean, you do know that Snyder made a shot for shot adaption of the book, so there should be no reason why somebody could love one but hate the other, other than complete bias? The whole reason the movie was good was because Snyder loved the COMIC so much, and tried to make the movie exactly like it. Miller actually did a lot of research for 300, and in one of the letters column of 300, one person who works with and has studied historical greek fighting and apparel commended him on his authenticity. So I would like to know exactly which part of 300 you guys thought was a defamation of your heritage?
Posted 12/16/2009 at 01:01:32 AM
Jarga the Hutt replied to emaN:
I will not deny the snazzy of the movie, it was visually stunning and really captured the style and feel of the comic. Nor will I deny the appeal of the graphic novel, as I really enjoyed it. But please do not pretend that 300 (either the movie or the graphic novel)has any historical accuracy. This may come as a shock but the Spartans did not go into battle wearing only cotton briefs and a smile. Frank Miller sacrificed historical accuracy in favor of a cinematic flair, and did it well.

John replied to Zann:
What do you mean raping your heritage? I'm Greek too, and I don't think my heritage was raped. Whatever the hell that means? Was Homer raping our heritage when he referred to mystical creatures and gods in the Iliad and the Odyssey? Because I'm pretty fucking sure there wasn't this guy named Achilles born from a nymph that was invulnerable except for his ankle.
Ever heard of historical fiction you moron? If the story was told like a documentary, it wouldn't make for a good movie. It would be on the History Channel.
Posted 12/16/2009 at 01:23:23 AM
Ah, I love the sound of rational voices in the morning. People really need to get over themselves and find some perspective. People get pissy when something they love or cherish gets remade, re-told, rewritten, re-done, refurbished, re-whatever. Check it: Those things you love and cherish? They aren't destroyed because something newer comes along and does things, shows things, tells things, etc., a little (or, a lot) different from before.
@Zann: Frank Miller is crapping on/raping your heritage? How? By telling a story that actually got people interested in learning about the true history of the Battle of Thermopylae or the Persian War? Oh, but, of course, there were some people who just took the movie at face value and didn't bother learning about what actually happened. So? Does that demean the knowledge others have, does that threaten your own, personal connection to your heritage? I don't think so. And, if it does, you should probably consider why it does.
Even the Greek histories can't be counted on for due dilligence and total accuracy. Herodotus likely made up just as much as Frank Miller has, but it just rings closer to reality because the former lived closer to the time the events occurred. At least the latter is up-front about writing fiction.

being the first one that pops to mind.
so what if he's making a "prequel" to 300? big fucking deal. i'll betcha atleast 95 percent of the people on here who are whining about him doing it will eventually go see it anyway.

I think everyone is blowing it way out of proportion. Anyone that says Frank Miller sucks have no idea what they are talking about. Everyone brings up what he has done this decade. Three things. Dark Knight Strikes again, All Star, and directed the Spirit. Based on those three things, you guys act like he's the worst writer ever, claiming he ruined Batman. Have you read what the last few comics were like before Year One and Dark Knight Returns? Miller was the one that brought him back! Some consider Year One to be the greatest comic series made yet. You should be thanking him there was even a Batman to ruin. I can't believe there is so much hate for one of the best comic writers out there. Those three I mentioned earlier are a small spec next to what he did with Ronin, Daredevil, Elektra, Batman, Sin City, and even Big Guy and Rusty.

My theory is that he's always been this batshit insane; it's just that editors used to be able to keep him in check. But sometime in the 90s/early 2000s he managed to become big enough that he could ignore his editor and get stuff published the way he wanted it.

I'm Brazilian, and watched enough soap operas to know Rodrigo Santoro can't act his way out of a wet paperbag (he does play a decent jail transvestite, though). If you need someone to just stand there and look preety (or looking like a jewelry counter), he's your guy. Won't even flinch when the animators scan him for the CGI. But, to base an entire movie on him-as-Xerxes is a sure way to make a flunk. Unless, of course, Frank asks for Michael Bay to pitch in and add a crapload of explosions, so nobody will notice Santoro.(Well it did work for Channing Tatum).

Batman would never LOCK ROBIN IN THE BASEMENT UNNATTENDED SO HE HAS TO EAT RATS OR STARVE. I can not stress that last part enough. All Star Batman is the kind of guy who would go to Robin's house to pick him up and hear,"have some lemonade,I'm the goddamn Chris Hanson."

So he is making a movie Titled Xerxes, about the battle of Marathon, a battle that took place while his father Darius I ruled the Persian Empire?
Posted 12/16/2009 at 10:26:59 AM
Ha! That's what I was thinking, too. Maybe he's going to put Xerxes in as a general or a soldier, or something? Regardless, I'd much rather read a story with a slightly fractured focus that told several stories about Marathon than something contrived about Xerxes just to have a connection to 300. In that sense, I'd call this project kind of a mistake... But Frank Miller can't be completely discounted.
