I really don't want to spoil this for you, but suffice to say it's from the Black 20 guys, who did both the wonderful Transforminators and this little gem. So you should be able to enjoy it no matter which side of the Avatar fence you fall on. DON'T DIE BLUE FRANK! (Via /Film)

This would actually be a much cooler movie than avatar. Film making fail?

I went to your little blog, and apparently you hate Star Trek and District 9 as well. So yes, Avatar being a well-crafted scifi film, you will hate it.

Gotta say, I saw Avatar this weekend and really enjoyed it. I was one of the haters, thought he had lost his mind. Came out really pleased, simple film with a wonderful look. Really enjoyed the fact that it was simple, but not stupid. It new it was a basic story, and just ran with it.

Agreed. I too was pretty critical of it before seeing it. Coming out, I actually really enjoyed it. I think it's the difference between a movie not having a deep story, like avatar. And a movie not having a deep story 'and' being insulting to the audience, like transformers 2.

I saw it last night, with low expectations, and must admit I was entertained. As I thought it would be, the script is awful: every character is a cliché (especially the villain, who made me groan aloud with every line of dialogue), and we're beaten around the head with Cameron's "message" until we're as blue as the Na'vi.
(SPOILER ALERT to be safe, although what I'm about to say should be obvious.)
It also seems slightly hypocritical that a film preaching peace and understanding boils down to a high-budget Battle of Endor, with the alien indigines violently killing all the human invaders with their bows and knives. It makes sense, and the action scenes are impressive and quite cathartic, but it goes to show that Avatar is intended to be all about spectacle, with the message just providing a convenient excuse.
(END "SPOILERS")
The production itself, however, was impressive. I thought the CG characters looked fake and unimpressive in trailers, but they didn't seem out of place in the film's context. The attention to detail in their facial expressions and body language was excellent; enough to sell them as people, and not puppets. The actors all did a good job with what they had, and I ended up liking them all by the end of the film, even if they were about as deep as a puddle on paper.
I'd actually recommend seeing it in 2D. Considering how much the 3D element was hyped, it was never made much use of, and when it was noticeable it came off as more distracting than complementary. It didn't help that the glasses I was given were awful, compared to the ones I had for Pixar's "Up" a couple of months ago. Whether that was down to my choice of cinema or whether it's a different kind of 3D technology, I don't know, but they made the film almost impossible to follow at times, due to how blurry they made the picture.
Despite all the hype, Avatar is really nothing more or less than the archetypal action film, only with more impressive CGI than usual. The themes and characters are explored only enough to justify the many spectacular action scenes, and while I was never particularly bored throughout, I didn't come away feeling like I'd had an "experience". For me, personally, there was nothing about it to inspire either love or hate; it was simply watchable.
But considering how much money it cost to make, that does seem like a shame.

I stopped watching half-way through. The people who made this don't seem to be aware of the fact that actors were used to create the Na'vi characters in Avatar.

Ya, I enjoyed there other mash up trailers, but this missed the mark for me. Missed it by a wide margin.

Tom Robin replied to Grady Stiles:
Yes! Performance Capture! Not animation! (except for hands and littles corrections).
Na'vi'actors are "just" numerized instead of being photographed.
Great Movie! Classic, but powerful story, made in the same Wood as a Star Wars, Lord of the Ring or Nibelungen, not just a Pocahountas ending by Kick-assgiving.

Avatar was good, I loved it. Yes it's predictable but it is also BAD ASS. And somehow... the blue girl is a fox.

Now you're bringing out the furries with your obstinate refusal to watch the Movie that shows what a useless bull****ter Michael Bay really is.

I'm kind of disappointed that you're going into this assuming that you might hate it. There's plenty of critical acclaim, and if you take a good listen, nearly everyone who watched it can identify its flaws but overall describes it as an amazing experience.
This ain't no Dragonball: Evolution. That's a movie you can go into hating the crap out of.

That wasn't awful, but nothing to write home about. I saw Avatar a couple of days ago and it was pretty damn good. Yes, it's basically Dances With Wolves with Blue People and a Happy Ending. But Cameron delivered. Solid acting, a plot that makes sense, and amazing visuals. You want to know how bad it could have been? Just watch the first couple of parts of that hilarious Phantom Menace Review that was posted this week. We should consider ourselves lucky Avatar came out as well as it did. The 80%+ review at Rotten Tomatoes are not a fluke, Avatar is a solid flick.
