The Wild Hunt is a movie from French director Alexandre Franchi about a large group of people who gets together for an elaborate Viking-themed LARP. As you might suspect, comedy ensues. But then kidnapping and possible sexual assault also ensues, which implies the comedy stops ensuing -- basically, a guy has to rescue his girlfriend from some of the LARPers who are taking the game too far. You know, just reading what I've written, the movie sounds terrible, but I swear I watched the trailer and I think it looks great. I don't know what to think any more. (Via FilmDrunk)

the trailer shows the film proves what happends when a fan winds up losing being able to tell the differance between the fiction which is the game and reality with nasty results. intense

Holy shit. Not two seconds after I reply and it's already starting... on a geek site, no less!
demoncat - just to save you a load of embarrassment in the future, go read some of the articles at theescapist.com. There is no truth to the urban legend that ANYONE, ANYWHERE has ever lost their shit because of a roleplaying game. Not even a LARPer.

I dunno... I thought the first minute or so where it looks like it's going to be a comedy about LARPers looks very promising. Shades of "The Gamers" or "Dorkness Rising".
And then it gets into the part where they suggest that the only women who go to LARPs or Renn Faires go there to play the role of captives and/or prostitutes and they take fake money to sleep with men for real... and then the whole suggestion of sexual assault... and that kills the comedic mood.
And then I think about how most people already think ALL role-players are like this... and I think about how this movie could be the biggest blow to the Roleplaying hobby since the dark days in the 80s when Tom Hanks was showing us that getting into D&D was a surefire path to madness, suicide and eternal virginity.

The percntage of good looking LARPers in this film is WAY TOO HIGH to make it believable!

True that. You can find hot women at LARPs, and even rarer cheesecake for the girls, but they are damn rare, and it's about the game secondary. The primary reason they play is to practice their drama chops or for the costumes.

Also, no LARPers' shit that I know of is that nice or legitimate looking. What.

A movie about a LARP? That's so post-modern. Well, post-post-post-modern. It's French, so I guess it's just avant-garde?

I agree with dchopkins - this looks good, even though I know there is a high chance of awfulness...But it will be definitely be on my Netflix queue (I can't imagine spending movie theater money on it)
The tough part is that the role players and LARPers will probably be offended by a movie making the logical jump that they're all just one hot babe away from stepping off the deep end, while the non LARPERs will probably be turned off by "sweet emotional core about LARPing" that I am sure the movie will have. A straight up awesome comedy about LARPers would have rocked.
I am hoping that at some point Tom Hanks shows up and goes totally crazy...

"Starman" Matt Morrison replied to Motivational Smart Ass:
Look into two movies - The Gamers and The Gamers: Dorkness Rising. They are side-splittingly funny films about role-players that are...
a) about ten times more accurate than what you'll see in a mainstream film about gaming
b) presents gamers as nerds capable of maintaining friendships (if not relationships with women) who aren't one bad dice roll away from blowing up a school or becoming a serial rapist.

Thanks Matt! I have added both movies to my Netflix Queue - they both sound fun. They are not related though, are they? They seem very different...

"Starman" Matt Morrison replied to Motivational Smart Ass:
The Gamers movie on Netflix is not the same as the gamers movie I was talking about. "Dorkness Rising" is the sequel to the original Gamers movie I was talking about and it looks like THAT one is not on Netflix.
Thankfully, it seems you can now watch all of the first Gamers movie on the website of the group that made it - The Dead Gentlemen - for free.

Thanks Matt! i will definitely check out the online version. Have you seen the Netflix one? I may leave it on the queue, as it sounds funny (not that that means much...)
P.S. Sorry about replying to my own comment instead of yours - my browser doesn't seem to let me respond to the nested comments...

No. "The Gamers" movie on Netflix is a different movie.
It looks like the one i'm talking about is now available on the website of Dead Gentlemen Productions. Do a google search for it - I've tried posting the direct link here twice and it wouldn't go through.

If this is even slightly commercially successful (actually, even if it's not) expect it to be used as evidence by the Jack Chicks and Westboro Baptists of the world of the evils of roleplaying games.
If it were possible to insulate it from that fallout, I'd actually be interested in seeing this, because it does look like a pretty good concept for a thriller.

Movie looks interesting. Makes LARP look cooler than it could ever actually be though (No, I am not saying rape is cool, just the way the game looks in all its other parts.) There's not a single actor that I saw that looks even remotely like people who are actually into this stuff. I think, though that getting into an uproar about what this will mean for the LARP community is not necessary. This kind of film will have a minimal impact of any kind on the non-nerd community.

I hope LARPers will take this in stride. It's not like you see the government throw a huge hissyfit everytime a movie accuses it of having some massive conspiracy. Let's all enjoy the ride but leave reality in the corner until the credits roll.

I saw this movie at TIFF this past year actually. It basically plays out exactly as the trailer shows: starts off with the potential to be quite hilarious but quickly turns into a pretty terrible dramatic thriller. It was completely ruined for me.
Franchi just doesn't know what he wants from this movie, and never ends up making a coherent decision. It was one of the most frustrating films I've seen in a long time because I couldn't help but feel that this could have been Canada's answer to "Shaun of the Dead" (or rather, something within that lightly darkened comedy realm). Instead we get a mix of half a dozen genres, none of which play a prominent enough role to settle the movie down.
Sorry, but I recommend a "skip".

So is this supposed to be a dark comedy or a comedy that morphs into a straight-up horror/thriller? Much like watching LARPING at cons this has left me confused and strangely aroused(I'm talking about my interest).

oh wow. yet another film that
(a) presents anyone interested in activities other than football or Gossip Girl as grotesquely socially inept;
(b) uses sexual assault as some kind of "edgy" plot mover, without ever bothering to actually shed any light on the subject;
(c) presents women as either objectified eye candy or victims (as the result of being objectified eye candy); and
(d) bases most of the film on a man having to save a woman.
SNORE.
yeah, no effing way they're getting my money.

also, a clue to all those people commenting about how there aren't any "hot" women in LARPing where you're at:
#1) you just watched a trailer where a woman presumably gets gang raped and your first response is "how come we don't get hot women like that?"
???????
did you go to the Patrick Bateman School of Gender Relations?
#2) in many of these events the only designated roles for women are along the lines of wenches, dancers, servants and prostitutes.
...yeah, and you wonder why more women don't join these things.

I am a female larper. In England we have attractive people, male and female. The ratio is about 60/40 in the system I play in. There's no "designated roles" for males and females, nor have I ever heard of a system where there is. Personally, I'm in it for the roleplay, and running around hitting things, in roughly that order . I don't know how different it is in the US. Judging by your comments, most of you have never larped, but if anyone has and wants to tell me how it's different, I'd love to hear it.
It seems like a fairly interesting premise for a thriller. I think most people will have the good sense not to take it too seriously, but I'm an eternal optimist.
