Bryan Singer on 'X-Men: First Class': It's got to be about Magneto and Professor X
NO. NO IT DOES NOT, SINGER. The whole point of the fucking movie is that it's about the formation of the X-Men, their early days. There's no absolute need to have Magneto involved at all. Plus, it might be noted, that MAGNETO'S BEEN THE BAD GUY IN ALL THREE X-MEN MOVIES, INCLUDING THE TWO YOU'VE ALREADY DONE. We've seen Magneto. We know his deal. I think I speak for most nerds when I say PICK SOMEONE ELSE. It's not like the X-Men are hurting for enemies here. Apocalypse, Mr. Sinister, the Hellfire Club... hell, I'll take Mojo at this point. Just something new, please.
What happened in-between X2 and Superman Returns that made what Bryan Singer wants a movie to be about different from what audiences want a movie to be about? Did he mutate? Was kryptonite involved?

There were X-Men movies? I didn't notice since Wolverine was taking up the screen for 90% of the films. Singer is a studio yes-man and a middle of the road talent. He's been spewing out a ton of thoroughly mediocre fair and there's no reason to get excited about his involvement anymore.

But it IS all about him, Mr Bricken. Poor guy had some daddy troubles, AND is gay. And then those mean old meanies at Fox made him finish X-Men 1 early and without a much budget waaaah! Seriously, though, there better be Sentinels in it! Transformers made giant robots cool already(for movie studios, "cool" is really "it was made by comercially successfull other movie".

That's not to say new villains can't be introduced to the audience. Scare Crow and R'as Al Ghoul worked for Batman Begins. Which is a fitting example, since both franchises grounded possibilities beyond repair.

What's really funny about X-Men is that for all the outcasts-they-could-be, the X-Men's most popular characters have very little to do with a specific social philisophy. Or is there a social analogy for being an immortal rage machine, a Magic rock wielding mean step brother, a cosmic entity possesed telepath, or a ninja in a one piece bathing suit who switched minds with some British Superheroine? If you followed who I was talking about, this are mostly characters that apeared AFTER the X-men's disastrous first run. I guess my point is that X-Men isn't popular because of social whatchawhoozits, nor has it ever been: It's popular because GUYWITHCLAWS, that's why.

As much as I love Arcade and his premise, I'd like to see him relegated to maybe an opening sequence. We open a film to find the X-Men battling their way out of Murderworld, we're introduced to the characters and their powersets this way, and they beat Arcade and they're like Good job, X-Men, let's go home and film starts. Boom!

If you read the original Dave Cockrum issues (particularly the Shi'ar war stuff) Star Trek is reference both visually and outright mentioned in dialogue. Also, even if Superman and Spiderman were outsiders before X-Men, it doesn't take anything away from X-Men's appeal as such, but I think an oddball group like the X-Men seems more inclusive and open than loners like Spidey and Supes. Besides, even if Spidey started out a nerd, as soon as that radioactive spider bit him he was a superpowered stud with a six pack (albeit one who still struggled with money and relationships). Superman is set apart from humanity, but only because he's a freaking god- Not quite as sympathetic to us lonely losers as eternally hounded mutants like Nightcrawler (though given a choice, I'll take the god thing).

I'm not sure if it was in order to promote the rumored "mutants as gays" allegory people always bring up, but I felt that Singer grounded his X-Men too much in the "real world". As a result, that ruled out certain corners of X-Men continuity. Some ideas and characters simply became too ambitious to even be considered for the movies. By movie 3 (yes, I know it wasn't Singer by then), even Magneto was starting to look pretty retarded in that tiny helmet of his. If they used Mr. Sinister, I feel he'd just be a guy named Nathaniel Essex, who walks around in a black suit and MIGHT have a tiny little diamond bindi on his head or something. Apocalypse? He'd just be some old, creepy Egyptian guy, but you'd never be able to see him in the suit. Plainly put, Singer backed the X-Men into such a creative corner, that Magneto is pretty much the only one they CAN fight at this point. Or maybe Arcade, but he'd be more of a modern-day gamer asshole than a little redheaded bastard in a suit and an amusement park.

I've never seen Superman Returns to the end I don't want to. But you're quite right, sometimes prevailing nerd opinion is ass-bite worthy. By the way, the Magneto, Professor X friendship is, and should be, integral to the story of the X-Men. I know this, I would demand this, but I'm not even a big X-Men fan.

I think a lot of people are missing that this is X-Men FIRST CLASS. It's an origin story. So of course it's going to feature Prof X and Magneto. Even moreso because movie continuity Magneto was more involved in helping Charles build the school. Not too keen about that, but Magneto was their first villian, so an origin story needs him. Of course they need younger actors for everyone. Also, sadly Fox will want to tie it into Wolverine Origins or whatever that sh--fest was called.

Do note, that despite Xmen1 and 2 being better than the 3rd movie, Singer was that director that told his actors to NOT become associated with the comics. He told them not to understand their characters. So yeah, when it comes to being good to the comics and creating what the fans want, I never expect that with Singer.

Stories tend to be better when they focus on a protagonist, not a assemblage of shallow characters (see Star Wars Ep. I-III; those movies would have been much better if they had focused on Obi-wan as the protagonist).

How about we do what Hollywood is doing with Superman and what they did with Batman, forget the last movies were made and start new. That would also include no Brian Singer. Maybe we should just accept the fact that the X-men universe is so dense, that it can't really be put into film. How about a TV show instead? Something to erase our brain from the clone called Heroes.

After Superman Returned and destroyed that franchise for the foreseeable future I don't have any high expectations for Singer this time around..It's like he's a reverse Micheal Bay...Bay does everything loud and shitty while Singer does everything too ridiculously nuanced and minimalistic... 1 "good"(Singer)... 1 evil (Bay - and yes no quotations are needed for this fuk)... Singer should embrace telling the X-Men from the perspective of the TEAM instead of some nuance story about that damn Magnet-AntiNazi and his crippled BFF...We already understand Magneto indepth...

I think that, unlike Spider-Man 3 it juggled a huge amount of threads very well, probably with the knowledge that it would be the last of the series. We got a Sentinel (sort of), Juggernaught, Jamie Maddrox, Moira MacTaggart, Angel, Kitty Pryde, Beast, Callisto, Dark Phoenix, the Danger Room, The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants- so much fan wanks, and most really well interpreted. I didn't want to see Cyclops killed, but it was done well and made sense in the new Hugh Jackman/Wolverine- centric movie universe (not my thing, but he's very popular). I found Professor X's death scene incredibly moving. I grew up wanting to be an X-Man and his death felt almost like a family member's. It was understated, as per PG13, and horrible all at the same time. As for the assault on Alcatraz- again, I enjoyed it. Yeah, in the comics Magneto could probably smash the place open on his own, or tunnel in, or Jean Grey could have just dissolved it in one second, but that wouldn't be very satisfying cinematicly, nor would it deliver Magneto's message of mutant terrorism- using the Golden Gate Bridge to fly everyone over may have been ridiculous, but that's kind of the point- he wanted to show how insanely powerful Mutants are. Of course in the end it's a matter of taste, but as someone who fell in love with these characters 35 years ago I found the movie very satisfying, and very re-watchable.

God, I'm gonna sound like a douchey fanboy for this, but... You can't do an Onslaught story for a prequel to the X-Trilogy called X-Men: First Class. I hated that story in the comics, though I was glad it wrapped up a lot of the dangling modifiers that Bishop brought with him from the future, but there's simply too much set-up that needs to happen before Onslaught could even show up and have it make sense. Plus, this movie is ostensibly about the formation of the team, so the big reveal of Onslaught's true identity wouldn't have nearly the weight and meaning it does in the comics. So, you could argue that they could do a 4th movie taking place after X3 that told the Onslaught story. Still, no. Still too much set-up, and the real Onslaught is dead! (Sorta.)

at least if Bryan given how he did the first two xmen films is doing first class it hopefuly will not be so bogged down and some characters will not get wasted. plus he is also looking at xmen four which hopefuly brian does it as xmen three was suppose to be dark phoeix the main part of the story instead of wasted till the last part of the film for the old mutant cure must be stopped and also not indrocuce so many xcharacters that bogged down x3 into overload

I wish they would just go ahead and make that Magneto Origins movie that's been kicking around since forever--though preferably not with the script that was leaked a while ago, 'cause that wasn't very good. I agree that Magneto needs his own movie, but if there's gonna be an X-Men First Class movie, it should be about the X-Men's early (preferably Wolverine-free, though he was probably central to the formation of the team or some crap in the movieverse) days. Maggie and Chuck deserve a movie, but I don't think this should be it.

Precisely. What was done to Scott-- well, the WAY it was done-- is unforgivable. Actually, most of that movie is. The only strengths it had were Kelsey Grammer being prefectly cast as Beast and Kitty Pryde's character actually becoming an X-Man and doing something. Of course, even those strengths were turned into weaknesses due to Beast's horrible, horrible make-up job and Ellen Paige's barely decent take on her character. As bad as Wolverine of the X-Men: Origins: This Time It's Personal was, it had at least had a semi-coherent story that and had some actual entertainment value. Not much, but X3 was just torturous.

The villain that makes the most sense for a prequel: Amal Farhouk a.k.a. the Shadow King. He was one of the first supervillains that Xavier faced. I know that it was some D-lister calling himself "Lucifer" that Prof. X lost his legs when fighting, but I wouldn't mind them changing that to Shadow King.

Be wary of the Avengers and possible JLA movies. Doesn't matter if the Avengers are smaller. Ultimately, the movies have to focus on one or two characters in a movie. Which is why the first two X-Men movies were more about Wolverine and Rogue. Not saying it can't be good. Avengers has a better chance if it's Captain America, Iron-Man, Thor, Giant-Man, and Wasp, since they can focus on the big three more. JLA would never work because Superman's role in the movie can't be reduced (as it was during the first season of the animated series, which angered a lot of people), Batman is the same, as is Wonder Woman, the Flash, and Green Lantern. If the movie is heavily tilted towards Superman and Batman, then why bother. If it's the opposite, ditto. I love X2, so it's not impossible to a team movie, but characters have to take a backseat for it to work.

Nope, the storylines for the Magneto movie will be merged into this one. We have a Catch-22: the studio cancelled the Magneto movie in favor of this one, so how do you remove Magneto from this movie after the investments made in writing Magneto's storyline for a previous movie?

Wolverine, Storm, Nightcrawler, Colossus were based on the Legion of Super-Heroes. Dave Cockrum originally created Nightcrawler for them. Star Trek had nothing to do with it. As for heroes being out of place, wanting to fit into society, social misfits, both Spider-Man and Superman did it before them. And, it works if done correctly (I think the primary reason both they and Batman are so popular is because they're orphans. Each one acts like a differant stage. Superman is the boy, Spider-Man is the teenager, and Batman is the young adult. I love Superman and that isn't meant as childish or an insult). Anyway, beating people over the head with it though doesn't work.

Well, you are touching on a general policy problem of marvel here. Since Wolverine was such an immensely popular character and in parts still is it was only natural for them to put him front and center in as much products they could muster. Overexposure in turn as drastically reduced the appeal of the character, that and the increasing number of hack writers who are allowed to slaughter the character into nothingness. When I was younger i loved that character to bits, because he used to get all the cool stories. These days he is so watered down that he is barely recognizable. So it's not really the movies fault, or Singer's for that matter, but more Marvel's idiocy in dealing with their properties.

I would like an X-Men movie that is actually about the ensemble cast they are made up of, instead of always being about one character (Wolverine.) forget Sinister and Apocalypse for a minute. Those are heavy hitter finale villains, and would mop the floor with a bunch of mutants who just met each other. How about we go back to the beginning, and do a story about the Sentinels. That way Singer can keep his racial tension, and we can get a fresh threat to the X-Men in a movie. They don't even have to be giant robots (but that would be cool.) They could do them Terminator style with human disguises. It would be a more effective way for the sentinels to operate anyway.

The biggest problem I had with it right off the bat was the absolute waste of the Dark Phoenix storyline. It was important enough that it should have been the A plot. Unfortunately, it was relegated to a B plot, since the cure story took over. (The cure story, which was fine for a four-issue comic story, didn't really work as the central plot of a feature film, especially after the huge stakes of Stryker's plan in X2.) For the most part, Jean Grey just stands around glowering, never really unleashing the destructive potential she supposedly had. Yeah, she disintegrates some people, but it never really felt like such a huge deal, not even when she did so to Professor X. There was just no build-up to it. I think the makers really wanted the audience to think, "Holy shit! They mean business!" Instead, I just thought, "Really? Huh. No way that'll be permanent." Speaking of lack of permanence, the movie doesn't even have the strength to stand by its big-shit-for-the-sake-of-big-shit happenings. Just before the credits, we see that Magneto is getting his powers back, and after the credits, we discover that Professor X has transported his consciousness into someone else's body. It just undermines everything they tried to do. The one major death that did seem permanent was that of Cyclops. This just confused me since a) it happened <i>off-screen</i>, and b) this film should have been his moment to shine, seeing as how he was the one with the biggest connection to Jean. (X2 even ends with Wolverine telling Cyclops, "She chose you.") Unfortunately, a combination of studio politics--"How dare James Marsden continue to work with Bryan Singer???"--and fan pandering--"The audience likes Wolverine more than Cyclops anyway"--caused Scott to get the shaft. Then there's the idiocy of the assault on Alcatraz. So Magneto has rounded up a lot of powerful mutants, and he has on his side the most powerful mutant on the planet (possibly the universe, if her abilities match those of the Dark Phoenix of the comics). So the first wave of the assault consists of mutants whose abilities appear to be...running and jumping? Against soldiers armed with projectile weapons. I know that Magneto's mutant powers don't necessarily make him a brilliant tactician, but given his intelligence, I'd've thought he'd be more capable than that. Since this is already super-long, I'll end by saying that I was also disappointed by how poorly the ensemble was handled. I felt X2 seemed almost effortless in the way it juggled so many different characters but still found ways to make all their plot threads pay off. <i>The Last Stand</i> just has elements that go nowhere (e.g., the Kitty-Bobby-Rogue triangle and Angel, among others). They introduce so many new characters that get next to nothing to do. The whole movie is just a mess, and I wish I could erase it from my memory.

Apocalypse would be awesome especially if they can find a way to pitch Keith David's voice to sound like John Colicos. Wait,what am I saying they could get T. Ryder Smith to do it, his work as the the voice for Baron Werner Ünderbheit sounds close enough to send many a nerd in to seizure akin to la petite mort.

i'm tired of everyone complaining about magneto. first off yes i know magneto as a villain is simple in his motives, he is the <b>exact</b> opposite of xavier in his motives and his wants which is why the confrontation between the two always works out so well, there's the history there between those characters, friends turned rivals turned enemies, it works well. the problem most ppl are having is that they are tired of seeing magneto be the enemy. which i understand but im personally not tired of him as a villain as long as its sir ian mckellan at least providing the voice of the character. there is some allure about the past that always makes us as humans interested in recreating it somehow. now singer wants to go back and tell how the X-Men were born. this story requires magneto if they were to do it slightly accurately as magneto fucking helped build cerebro. the problem that plagued the third x-men was that they had too many plots going on, they tried to make it like a comic where for a few pages you focus on one character then you change to another. it doesn't work like that sadly in film. the reason why they had to focus on wolverine so much in the first two films (even the third) is that he sells more tickets than cyclops would which is kinda sad. the first film yes magneto was the main villain and wolverine was a main character but rogue was the real central character if you think back to it with the second one stryker was the real villain, magneto just happened to be involved, but then again isn't he always involved in the x-men's plights in almost every arc including the new one! the third one i think was more about the destructive power of the phoenix which pissed me off bc even after watching 2 into 3 (first time i didnt see x2) i was like <b>WHERE THE FUCK DID THIS COME FROM</b> what they said is that we would have gotten apocalypse if singer was on for three (thats just a rumor) but the problem with sinister and apoc is how retarded hard it would be to make it work, i write screenplays and stuff here and there and i thought about it. how do you introduce a character to an audience that they dont know? yes i know a large amounts of ppl who read the comics know them but what about joe schmo who doesn't know them? you have to take half an hour or more to figure it out to explain it to them. i just hope they do this right, thats all

X-2 was nothing but a Wolverine Origin movie. For them to be titled X-Men then go with a big ego stroke for Logan kinda defeats the purpose of them being X-Men movies

This movie isn't about Xavier VERSUS Magneto, it's going to be about the two of them founding the school, building the teams, how each of them operate with each other and the other students, and then finally, how they BECAME enemies, building into what we saw in the first three X-movies.

It could actually be really good to focus on Prof X and Magneto - especially if Magneto is not a bad guy but an ally that slowly becomes more and more frustrated with Prof X passive ways. Having a different villain crystallize that conflict and bring it to a head would be interesting to see - I would say it would be perfect for Sinister or Sentinels to bring that conflict to a head. The young x-men could be supporting cast but I don't need a bunch of teens to be the main focus. Would you rather watch a movie about adults have adult conflicts or teenagers having teenage drama (put it this way do you like Dracula and Underworld or do you like Twilight?) I think it would be great if Magneto left prof x and took students with him starting a Hellion squad which we could see him reckless get killed - or have the x-men battle and eventually save when they see Magneto sees them as soldiers not students. Valkyrie, Usual Suspects, and Xmen were all good movies. Superman had some problems but Singer was stuck with a shitty script and a shitty character and that movie was shot really well. So I say give the guy a chance. And stop being fags about Singer's sexuality.

i don't know how this guy got so over-rated. The Usual Suspects was good but not great: i didn't care to see it a second time and when i did i got nothing new out of it. X-men 1 and 2 were good if you've never read the claremont era comic. but if you had you'd know that the movies don't really even come close to the depth and quality that comics put out, not even close. they may as well have shot the movie in lego characters.(and for those of you who think that's a good idea, you don't see it but my tongue is sticking out at you.) then the guy leaves, in the middle of the franchise, to plagiarize Superman, and all is well and good. 'it's ok singer, you can come on back, no harm no foul. your absence was the only reason X3 blew chunks. it's not like there are any other directors out there that can direct...' i'm not going to the theater on this, and since Superman Returns, i'm not sure i'm even redboxing it. what can i say?, frugality aside, i really got burnt with that superman movie. besides, i've actually read the original magneto stories. they weren't that good. but that won't stop this guy from copying them either. bryan singer, you phony phoning-it-in phuck.

Well, Avengers isn't really a good comparison, not only are there less characters, but they are each getting their own movie. I'm saying, as an introduction to the X-Men universe, it works in a movie. I imagine they would have kept expanding the scope and the focus...you know, before Ratner got involved. Also, in all fairness, both of his flicks were planned to be much more elaborate, but were hampered with shrinking budgets and studio meddling (yet Ratner got $250 million to make his sequel!).

It's a team movie have the team focus on one goal. you don't have to break down the story and give an explanation why everyone is on the team. X-Men, like Star Trek (which heavily influenced it's 70's reboot when Storm, Colossus, Nightcrawler etc. joined) has always had a special appeal to those of us who feel out of place in the real world, who wished for a family that would accept us no matter our differences or social shortcomings. 2 good X-Men movies? I guess if you compare then to Last Stand then they are good but they were nothing but Wolverine movies. This news doesn't surprise me Singer should be banned from Comic book movies. Also First Class was a really shitty read so my hopes aren't high for this moveie

In fairness, everyone involved with the new movies screaming 'THE X-MEN HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A GAY RIGHTS ANALOGY' get annoying after a while. [Let's just say that I buy into the MLK / Malcom X interpretation far more than Singer and McKellen's views on the matter.]

Even if the movie isn't about Magneto, it's still about Magneto. He was the first villain the X-Men faced in Uncanny X-Men #1, he's their primary villain, the movies have already established that he's tied into the formation of the school. Plus, he's one of the very few adversaries the X-Men have who aren't patently ridiculous: - Mr. Sinister and Apocalypse are based too deeply in continuity for a movie audience to understand. - Government/business conspiracies? They've been in all three X-Men movies plus Wolverine. - Mojo and Arcade? Seriously? - The Brood... okay, that one I'll give you. The X-Men vs. The Brood might be cool.

Well, I can see his point. This movie provides an interesting look into Mag's descent into villainy which can be compelling in and of itself. Of course, the whole prequel film as a villain origin is more difficult to pull off that it woud seem. I don't think i need to say any names *cough*georgelucas*cough* That doesn't mean that Mags is going to be the villain, if anything they need a villain that would push Magneto into assuming his future role. Someone to reinforce his distain of humanity. Pity they used Stryker already, he would have been perfect.

I'm going to say what you're thinking- it's his evil gay agenda. Now that's out of the way, I loved all 3 X-Men movies. The third was great, I can't imagine what problem anyone could have with it. That said, Singer clearly went insane during the production of Superman Begins (or whatever it was called). I think the Professor X/Magneto story IS an epic one that was touched on brilliantly in the X-Men movies (especially the third) and bears fleshing out- but I wouldn't want to sacrifice this new X-Men series to do it. Make it about the X-Men. Versus... the Hellfire Club. They were great- Emma Frost comes from there, right? The whole seduction of Jean Grey/Phoenix could fill in some of the stuff that came out in X3 nicely. Either that or start over with the next generation. You could even have Wolverine be the mentor if that's important to you -I'd prefer Frost or Storm or Beast (yes, Kelsey Grammar, because he was perfect). Ice Man, Kitty Pryde, Angel, some of those new ones that came after I stopped reading this shit in college...

Apocalypse? Really? Really? The guy has had one good storyline, and that was Age of Apocalypse and all his other stories were crap.

Maybe he means it's about Magneto and X's time forming the X-Men, before Mags went Rogue. Granted, we do need more villains (done right), and an established Hellfire Club with Emma Frost's Hellions going up against a rookie X-Men would be cool.
