Garrison Dean and Charlie Jane Anders of io9 made this pretty fabulous, '80s-style credit sequence for Firefly, complete with dated computer effects, freeze frames, and horrible/awesome synthesizer music. Certainly not a bad way to start this Friday.

The theme was very reminiscent of Mike Post, who did a lot of musical themes in the 80s.

My wife and I find the standard opening to be rib splitting hilarious when played at 2x speed for some reason. Could be the drinking... could be the melancholy lyrics on hyper crack. TakemylovetakemylandtakemewhereIcannotstand. Itdon'tmatterI'mstillfreetheycan'ttaketheskyfromme.

I love it. It brought me many good memories back.
-
plus they just didn't like Simon so they didn't care to squeeze him in.
-
Damn, you are the edgiest man alive. Can we be friends?
-
There's a good list! Top twenty sci-fi TV themes!
-
And yet Simon is left out of THOSE credits as well. WTF? If it wasn't for him breaking River out of the damn nuthouse, there'd be no main series thread.
-
Ran out of time for what, this week's episode? Jeez, if you're not gonna do it right, don't do it at all. What if they'd saved Mal for last, huh?
-
River with a smile is kind of creepy :)
-
na, FOX would have found a way to cancel it; maybe send an exec back in time to terminate it.
-
This is so much better than the actual opener. I don't mind the majority of the music on Firefly, but the sung theme song is AWFUL.
-
The comments on this make me want to buy a gun and go and kill all of these people... "I understand the love for this show, but the music on it (and yes I realize it's supposed to be a "cowboys-in-space" type show, and it's music reflects that) is the sole reason my wife and I couldn't watch it past the first disc. We absolutely HATED the shows music. Pity." Oh, I am sorry that you don't know how to use a dvd player. It's only been available for 15 freakin years. Chapter Forward? I hope this guy gets throat cancer and dies...
-
Sweet. If you follow the link to youtube, someone responded with closing credits of the same style. I love the way they "improved" the Mutant Enemy logo.
-
Is it wrong that I like this even more than the (admittedly incredible) original opening?
-
I would have totally watched this back in the day, based on the title sequence alone. (Big smile splitting face in two.)
-
Jeff Kaake! He was awesomely cheesy in Viper.
-
Ia!! Ia!! Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn!! Oh, my bad, sorry, it was a typo.
-
Where the people first posted it, they said that they ran out of time and left out Simon.
-
Clint Howard and Linda Hunt? Sold! I actually dig the opening credits that show pictures of the actor while giving their actual and character names. Maybe it's because I'm more of a visual learner. Maybe it's because I'm living my life two decades behind everyone else.
-
i lul'd... hard. this is perfect. but they did leave out the good Doc.
-
Better than the original. I effing hate that half-assed country song. And it's not the lyrics I hate. It's the production/singer.
-
It's the font treatment with the outlined gliding effect. The graphics look great. Go back and watch some 80's movies. They look nothing like this. Or perhaps even early 90's Remember the blood drop from Blade 1? These graphics age pretty well.

... and now that I think of it, is Nathan's hair the same as Jan-Micheal Vincent's? http://www.imdb.com/media/rm1229752576/nm0001821
-
Awesome! Is that the font from Airwolf?
-
No. It isn't. "The Ballad of Serenity" is one of the all-time greatest TV themes.
-
CG? They'd be lucky if they could do the ships with puppets. :D
-
The 80s was way more accepting than FOX executives. As to the video, the CG is too clean for the 80's.
-
if Firefly Came out in the 80s it would have had a longer life. The 80s was way more accepting than modern tv audiences

it's got nothin on Space Rangers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8DqLwdkgdk

It's Friday... Today is going to be full of good stuff until Rob unleashes the FFF... THEN he will destroy us.
-
Good I wasn't the only one who noticed, Simon deserves some love too GORRAMIT! He wasn't my favorite but had some pretty good scenes, ya know?
-
I never liked the theme song, so this sounded better for me. It needed waaaaay more Inara :)
-
Hey, not bad at all, just on it's own strength. ...but I just get this horrible feeling that it would have attracted more viewers to the show than the ACTUAL intro. And I must scream.
-
I'm pretty sure there used to be a doctor character on that show. Maybe this is like the first season of Gilligan's Island when they just said, 'and the rest' for the Professor and Mary Ann. I'm sure Simon will be in the credits in the next season. Oh... wait...
-
better than the actual open
-
Too bad about my speakers. The 80s themes were either awesome, cheesy, or awesomely cheesy. Remember the A-Team, Knight Rider, Magnum PI...
-
Oh my this ia so awesome!!!
-
this is going to be a good day. the fact that Rob didn't save this video for the end of the day MUST mean he's aware of even more awesome-ness to share with us... this is LITERALLY the tip of the awesom-burg... i better go buy a lottery ticket
-
Huh. They left Simon out of the credits. Otherwise it's pretty entertaining.
-
Awesome. Good way to start the day. It almost makes up for the pants-shitting terror of yesterday's ending.
-
Didn't they forget someone?
-
Awesome. It's the cheesy freezeframes on the actors when their names come up that really makes it.
