• I remember hearing that when the BBC did a radio play adaptation of the Knightfall storyline, he reprised the role of Alfred in that. I guess that's something worth tracking down, if you're interested.

• RIP Mr. Gough. You were a class act and a superb actor. In addition to the Batman films and Sleepy Hollow and others, he also played a non-credited guest starring role in The Legend of Hell House. I also rememebr him from the truly wonderful Horrors of the Black Museum. That film had the best opening sequence with the "special" binoculars that were sent to a woman.

• I'm glad people are acknowledging his role in the Hammer films. His performance in "Phantom of the Opera" was genuinely creepy, and I have to give him credit for that. Very strange seeing that performance after seeing him in the four Batman films.

• Actually, while British in origin, Konga wasn't a Hammer film. If it had been, it would probably have been a hell of a lot better. That said, it's worth seeing for its idiocy and the bits you describe.

• sad the world now is darker. for his alfred is one of the good things about the batman films added the balance. including to the shumaker take on the dark knight. not to mention his hammer horror films are a must for fans of those. sympathy to his friends and family for the loss a true legend and loved one. rip .

• The only part of the Schumacher shit storm that was Batman that didn't suck. He brought a sense of verisimilitude to the role. He will be missed.

• Well, shit. He was always the definitive Alfred, and I for one am still awaiting a Celestial Toymaker comeback. Rest in peace, Michael. You were truly a class act.

• Top Secret was a movie full of great lines, but Gough had one of the best: "If they find out you've seen this, your life will be worth less than a truckload of dead rats in a tampon factory." I still use that in my daily life.

• Before I saw him as Alfred, I remembered seeing him in a little-known Hammer film called "Konga," where he played a university professor lusting after one of his female students, and using his pet gorilla to kill off any rival suitors. The high point was where he injects said gorilla with a serum that causes him to grow to giant size. He then picks Gough up, and Gough spends the rest of the movie clutched in a big fake gorilla hand shouting indignantly, "Konga! Konga! Put me down, Konga!" Must have been embarrassing for him being a classically trained actor, but he probably felt he had to make the best go of it. A class act. He'll be missed.
