Dia de Los Muertos (Y Juan)

Yes, Juan of the Dead is a zombie horror-comedy like Shaun of the Dead. But it's notable for a couple of reasons: 1) it's Cuba's first horror film, apparently, and 2) unlike regular zombie flicks or even Shaun, Juan and his pals don't seem to be afraid of zombies at all -- it appears that given all the other shit that happens in Cuba on regular basis, zombies end up pretty unremarkable as a crisis. In fact, it looks like Juan immediately seizes the invasion of the living dead as a business opportunity. That's pretty outstanding. Here's hoping it makes it to U.S. theaters, or at least a domestic DVD release. (Via Blastr)

I hate to be the guy that makes this political but it is kind of Ironic that in a communist country the first thing they do is start an independent zombie killing business. I only bring it up because in Cuba that may actually wind up being the thrust of this film.

It's incredibly difficult to get anything from Cuba into the United States legally. Just about the only exception is artwork, and even those are tightly monitored.

Also, Cuban film students only get 20 hours of internet a month, which is a lot, since they're basically one of the few groups over there who absolutely NEED the internet for their craft. There isn't really a booming DVD industry over there. At least they're not only being commissioned to make propaganda films.
