The big question is "Outside of brand recognition, why?"

The setting and concept in the book is fantastic, but falls apart when there is no real resolution for the "fight against good and evil", King couldn't come up with a solid motivation to have the good guys investigate Vegas outside of a lame plot convenience bomb and instead of anything actually happening by the deeds of the heroes in the book, it settles for yet another plot convenience bomb set off by the hand of god, making the entire investigation/possible fight absolutely worthless.

If there is any movie based on the Stand, it would be better served only being "Inspired by" and fixing these issues with actual motivation, climax and denouement, not by slavishly worshiping an over-hyped book with a nifty premise.

Considering how this universe works as of late, I'm thinking this won't get made in favor of the atrocity that is the live-action Akira movie. Because Hollywood just wants to snort cocaine up its ass.

The ONLY person who could actually do a good job directing The Stand is Quinten Tarantino.

So, another book gets to bend over to pick up the soap for this crew.

Please, please, please, PLEASE let this proceed. The 1996 version was a nice try, but just didn't come anywhere NEAR the book. And please, let it be the uncut version they're adapting.

I personally think this is one of the greatest works of literature published in the 20th century, up there with Lord of the Rings.

I'll go on record of saying that the Stand didn't age particularly well. I know that's geek heresy, but having read it a few months ago (again) I was surprised at how it doesn't hold up very well as I remembered. Now, movies built off of epic books tend to lose even more in translation... so I'm less than excited about the project getting done. The TV miniseries wasn't perfect; but certainly serviceable and one of the better King projects. I have little confidence for this one.

Of course, there's also the problem with Stephen King dialogue.  I think Nostalgia Critic actually commented on this but:

King's Dialogue looks GREAT when written down, but it sounds awful when spoken.

Well, remember the first time it was announced that "The Stand" was being made, George Romero was going to direct.  That would have been a hell of a film...

I'll state the obvious again: why make this into a multi-movie series when it was already a TV mini-series. Okay, sure, the TV version was aired on ABC, which didn't have nudity, swearing, or explicit violence, but aren't there TONS of other properties to adapt?

My favorite King book by far is the Stand... but why couldn't they have announced they were working on an 'Eyes of the Dragon' move!

Thought the Randall Flag character was pretty good in the miniseries.  However I wonder how true to the book they will stay with the anal rape scene(stopped reading at this point)

I was mostly okay with the STand TV movie.  I twas kind of terrible in a lot of ways, but the things it did right were done really well, and were things that you hoped it would do well.

And some of the casting was inspired.

I could see myself going for this...but I agree with Gene Hoyle...a tv series would suit The Stand better.

The Stand min-series was perfectly awesome. There is no need to remake it.

I'm not trying to be a hater, but there's already been a mini-series of The Stand that from what i understand was pretty good. There's so much other post-apocalyptic literature out there that hasn't been touched yet. Why not do a movie on one of those? Yes i say that in part because i didn't really like The Stand, but i still think it's true. But i guess remakes are the order of the day...

This is far more likely to manifest than Ron Howards Dark Tower. I'd agree completely with Gene Hoyle saying a TV series would be the best especially if it was picked up by HBO. If it was going to be a movie, three parts at 150 minutes each minimum.

The "The Stand" mini-series wasn't that bad.  I can't remember all the stars, but Matt Frewer was great as the Trashcan Man.
