Did no-one else spot the Rock Band drum kit in the background of the final shot?
Strange thing to have in a "science" lab....

I thought this was real too, but there is no Japan Institute of Science and Technology (JIST). There is, however, JAIST but the logo is completely different from the one shown in the video.
I fear this is fake and just a Wipeout promo :(
The science is real but this video is fake, its a viral video for the new wipeout game.
This is clearly a fake, you can see the smoke through the track at 1:12 in the video.
Here, have a pair of videos of some REAL Quantum Levitation.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...
I would love for someone to do this in real life using the Sapphire Crystal, Superconductor, and Gold disks.
EDIT: Here is a simple version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...
Every weapon, every war, every soldier, every branch. Every story deserves to be heard. Share thestories of servicemen and women at ---kissinguniform.c0m---, and findfriendship, love, romance, marriage or even more with our heroes.
I did a write up about this and quantum locking in general I my site. http://www.consolelink.com/201...if it is fake, and it probably is, I'll be super pissed because they could have made a real one.
I'm with you. I still hope this one is real. I've seen very similar things in person and there really isn't anything that can't be done. I guess if it is fake we will find out soon.
Nice site by the way.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?f...They had another example here and someone made a hoverboard
That first ship does look suspiciously like the 'Titanium Series' Colonial Viper MK II . . .
There is no reason why this couldn't be real but the "smoke" vapor looks very similar to the Trapcode Particular particle system for After Effects. The fact that they use the same plugin engine at the end for their Quantum logo also makes me suspicious.
When he first puts the vehicle down over the track (at 0:45), I would say it "drops". He corrects its position, and it looks as if it was placed on a hard surface. What I've seen of QL, when you drop or let go of something in the field, it sticks. It doesn't move like it does when he lets go of it at 0:45. Anyone else seeing this?
The YouTube video information has a copyright for "(C) Copyright! All rights reserved belong to Sony Entertainment and SCE Studio Liverpool." From their website "Studio Liverpool began life as Psygnosis in 1984, swiftly building up a reputation for developing innovative, cutting-edge games for the leading game platforms. After becoming part of Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) in 1993, Studio Liverpool was intrinsically linked with the success of PlayStation®, creating the original "Wipeout" in 1995, followed closely by "Colony Wars" in 1996. The studio has since developed launch titles for every PlayStation format that has been released."
So, yes, viral...fooled me though. Got my nerd hopes up.
I can't decide if it's refreshing or depressing that so many people can't recognize a viral ad.
The ONLY reason I would say this is fake is the lack of frost/ice condensation on the actual vehicles. Comparing it to the Quantum Locking demo here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v... you can see a ton of ice built up on the disc.
Yeah I thought this was real too, until I watched the video. I know it's possible, but come on, if you can't tell those are CG ships racing around the track, then you need glasses. Also, I've seen quantum levitation on a track, but they had no way of propelling the object; it needed to be pushed. I totally believe that this is possible, though, and can't wait for this to be possible (at least on a consumer level).
Wow, very skeptical crowd today. Well Skepticism is a good tool for knowledge, but this one is real.
Then why is the video owned by Sony? And why can no one show any evidence such a institute has ever existed
http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%... Best I got about 北陸先端科学技術大学院大学. Although your right it's name doesn't have even the Japanese word for Japan in it. That's all I have. If you use the Jim Breen Japanese translation page or Yahoo's Bablefish it will help with a little of it. (でも 日本語ができる。 ごめんなさい)
I guess in the end I'm not too worried. I know the basic science of it and got to see a demonstration before. But you are right, I've not seen this particular track or demonstration before. If it's fake, it fake. If it's real, still nothing changes in my life. It was fun talking to people about it. I Imagine if I want a better Idea of the validity of this I'll have to hit the Japanese sites more.
Problem with that... that is for JAIST, Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, the video is from a JIST. Something there is no existence of online.
http://www.computer-go.info/ev... is a logo of JAIST, as you can see this fake JIST just make a look alike
Also why would a Institute use gmail.com address as their primary contact, and quote an american law when posting from japan...
Well apart from the dubious status of "JIST" some of the shots look too smooth and have CGI feel. Most noticeable in the final bit (after text) of ships moving away from camera - that bit looks definitely not quite right.
I'm also gonna add that as far as I know liquid nitrogen is not available in neat little canisters like that (we use a lot at work and such small quantity would be pointless and I suspect small canister not strong enough.)
Also let us not forget that Wipeout game is coming along the line, so yeah, viral ad.
yeah, when he first plugged that thing into the car, I would swear it was a CO2 cartridge for an airsoft gun.
Liquid Nitrogen is *not* sold in cartridges like that. If you are ever near a tank, you will always hear it hissing- that's because you never, ever, EVER seal a liquid nitrogen tank. They all have built-in release valves that vent excess pressure over time as it is used. This is just silly. There would be no need to forcibly inject it into the car- you could easily just pour it in or use a syringe.
Also note during the corners the "smoke" does't drop down like you would expect from nitrogen, and there is no web presence or anything showing existance of the group ever before posting of the video, I say its a fake.
Oh, also if you notice at one point the cars switch lanes, and such a thing would be impossible due to a track layout.
If you watch in the beginning when he just puts one car on (about 48 seconds in) he moves the car from one lane to another.
Yes, it's the water vapor. As the nitrogen boils it cools the air around it. Since the air can't hold much water it condenses into water droplets. Basically fog.
I'm really skeptical of this for two reasons. The soft appearance of the track looks like a simple ambient occlusion pass of a model, well tracked into a live scene. Secondly, as far as I can google, there is no such thing as JIST. There is a JAIST (A is for Advanced) in Tokyo, but being this group has only one video, has comments disabled and doesn't seem to exist anywhere on the net, I'm calling shennanigans.
I never questioned what it was called or the validity of the science behind the effect. I'm questioning the validity of THIS video, so thanks for googling it for me, but I think you missed my point.
I apologize for misinterpreting your real point. I mean no disrespect of your knowledge. I guess, real or viral, it was fun hearing everyone's reasoning of why they think it's fake. Real or fake I hope to find the answer soon.
"I wouldn't think the Japan Institute for Science and Technology would be cool if their scientists just made up shit and posted it on YouTube with JIST's name on it"
No, sure, because reverse engeneering vaginal fluid from AV Idols seems a lot more logic.
Many people seem to think it's fake, and I'm one of them. Too many things seem suspicious in the video. Guess we'll send this stuff along to the Mythbusters.
It's called Quantum locking. We have been doing versions of this since 1980. If you bring certain objects temperatures down (in this case with liquid nitrogen) you almost stop the magnetic flux of an object. (remember your magnet electromagnetic flux is like a sphere from N to S) This locks in into position in the x and y plane. (the z plane however could still rotate) Technically they could have put those cars on upside down or at an extreme tilt and it would still work. Give them a nudge in the Z direction and they would have spun like a top.
Interesting side note: Feisar was the first company in the Wipeout universe to perfect the Meisser Effect for use in levitation and transportation.
I did not know that Feisar was first to perfect Meissner Effect. Cool Fun Fact. Thanks.
OK, well it didn't appear in the comments above. My crystal ball must be malfunctioning :)
You can see the "smoke" through the track at 1:15.
Also, they're not going 1200kph.
;P
Nice catch. I hadn't noticed that until you pointed it out and I went back. Someone either forgot their alpha matte or didn't set up their particle collision properly.
You'll never hear a complaint from me about a new Wipeout game.
Well, except for the one about that gameshow that isn't Wipeout.
