Much better, actually. Although I still think Spidey's "Gosh golly gee whillickers!" voice acting and the horrible, horrible non-humor will keep me from watching it, seeing Spider-Man fight with Doctor Doom (!), tussle with Iron Man, and wearing his Iron Spider suit for no particular reason is all pretty groovy. And the cutaway to Peter sewing his costume is actually a pretty good gag. And I'm all for Spider-Man driving a web-shooting motorcycle, actually. But "J. Jonah Loudmouth"? Ugh. Maybe I can just watch this thing on mute. Thanks to Dallas P. for the tip.
More links from around the web!

to answer the confusion about the venom look, the only reason he looks like that now is because the symbiote took control of danny rand aka iron fist
Wait a minute....I just read some comments below....People are actually COMPLAINING about this?? (SIGH). Why am I not surprised? Why do people hate fun? The show looks great. There's really nothing to complain about.
It looks great, BUT we already had Spectacular Spider-Man....why end that and give us a new show? Spectacular Spider-Man and Batman: Brave & the Bold are two of the best animated superhero series we've had in years. 'Ultimate' will have big shoes to fill
Overall the animation was pretty good....though I have a few nitpicks...
1. Why the hell does Venom have dreadlocks and look like Candlejack?2. Where the hell is the consistency in animation? Some of it looks GREAT, while some of it looks like CRAP.3. Why the hell does Spidey need a motorcycle?
'Although I still think Spidey's "Gosh golly gee whillickers!" voice acting and the horrible, horrible non-humor will keep me from watching it' -- My thoughts exactly.
But the cartoon sounds pretty fun, with some teen-titans-anime-gags, but please! How many audience tests there must be to NOT have Drake Bell voicing this?
Wait. Is that J.K Simmons (Cave Johnson of Portal 2) providing the voice of J Jonah Jameson? That alone will make me watch this.
While there seems to be a whole lot wrong, I'm willing to give it a chance. I'm not expecting much, so hopefully that low bar might help me appreciate it.
Not a Marvel person in general, but I'll be quite interested to see the episodes Scot Mosier's written. He's a very funny guy.
Agreed. That's what's piqued my interest in this series. I heard him talk about it in Kevin Smith's "Smodcast".
Probably being overly optimistic here, but I'm hoping that most of the forced humor gets worked out in the first season and the show finds a balance. Maybe it'll turn out that all those cringe inducing chibi gags are from the first few episodes and will be minimized as time goes by.... Dammit I just really want to like this, but the clips are making it soo hard!
So now Hasbro has a reason to keep pumping out all those random spider-vehicles, huh?
OH GAWWWDDD... why call it Ultimate Spider-Man if the cartoon has almost nothing in common with the actual comic? Bendis' Ultimate Spidey only trained with SHIELD for a handful of issues, and then he bit the dust to make way for Miles Morales. THIS is the Saturday Morning Cartoon version of Ultimate Spider-Man. Just call it "SPIDERZ-MANZZ: X (the X stands for XTREME!)" and be done with it.
The awful title dropping, the forced and laborious attempts at "zany" humour, the way it feels like a freaking toy commercial, the way every bit of teenage angst of the comic seems to have been stripped out, too much emphasis on gadgets and not enough on Peter's own ingenuity, AND THAT STUPID FUCKING SPIDER-CYCLE!!!!!!
This feels like some sort of atrocious 90's X-TREEEEMEEEE Spider-Man cartoon we never actually got. It's just so glib and souless and transparent... the Dark Age of Comic cartoons returned to haunt us once again. If I want a Spider-Man cartoon, the best I'll have to settle for is the really rather good Generator Rex. It has action, humour, growing pains and a decent supporting cast, not to mention a likeable main character. Everything a Spider-Man cartoon SHOULD be.
The "Ultimate" doesn't mean anything. It's not supposed to be based on the Ultimate Universe. It's supposed to be an amalgam of several sources that takes place in the (current) Marvel Animation Universe.
This universe consists of:The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest HeroesWolverine and the X-MenUltimate Spider-ManHulk vs WolverineHulk vs Thor
Actually, this show is NOT in continuity with those above. I don't think those have anything to do with each other either.
I could have sworn Bendis was involved with the show in some way, I think as producer, so I assumed it would be a nominal adaptation of his comic. What few clips I've seen have more in common with the fucking Superhero Squad than Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
As I listened to it, all I could think of was "Spiderman as played by Johnny Test".
NOT A GOOD THING.
Rarely do I have such mixed feelings on something. There are parts of that trailer that I love, and parts of it that I hate (or at least dislike). I think I'm going to give it a shot just because it's Spider-Man, but it has a very thin line to walk on. Like, web thin. Dig?
Ah, that is Simmons voice acting I thought i heard? That's good news. The rest seems ok at best, like I'd watch it for the first few episodes and possibly pass.
What I always liked about Spider-Man was his self-reliance, mostly because he was broke and didn't have any other options but to pick himself up by his spider-straps. He made his own web-shooters and costume. His mentor, Uncle Ben, died before his very eyes, and he had to become a hero with only the inspiration to remind him. Nick Fury training him and giving him tech - essentially handing him al the material he needs to be a hero - doesn't leave much room for the kind of personal development that exemplified Peter Parker's heroic characteristics in the 616.
The one thing about a perpetually broke spidey that's always bugged me, is that he somehow always has enough money to buy a fuck load of chemicals to make his web fluid.
I think if Breaking Bad has taught us nothing, it's that you can definitely make some pretty complex chemicals at home on the cheap.
Maybe that IS why he's always broke, after paying rent and buying his web chems, he has no money lefter over for anything else.
He's not broke anymore. He works as an inventor. He has plenty of money, and a place to build new tech for his Spider-Man career.
But this isn't 616 Spidey, and it isn't Ultimate Universe Spidey. It's the Marvel Animation Universe Spidey, and he's just a weird mishmash of several sources.
Now with Web Zip-line Wheels for Awesome Playtime Action! The Bike that lets you websling while you websling so you don't have to websling.
In my head, that last sentence is spoken by Xzibit.
I'm gonna get booed for this one but.....Everyone goes on about how Spectacular Spider-Man was so great. Well honestly this animation looks smoother and not so anime lite that Spectacular had. (This is coming from someone who has all the multiple Gundam series on dvd. And Macross plus. and and and and.So nothing against anime.) Spectacular may have had good writing but I could never watch it because the animation infuriated me. Ultimate I would actually watch.
I agree that the animation/design looks better, but content wise, it seems a lot more anime lite. Those cut away jokes of him being chibi in this trailer and the last seems like a desperate plea to grab the anime fans, as well as the general feel of it. It's like 90's extreme mixed with anime lite. That's not a good combo!
Not to mention that it's doubtful that they'll be able to balance the feel as well as Teen Titans did.
the animation was never the reason to watch spectacular, it was the writing and the voice acting
Which are all great, but if the animation INFURIATES you, you can't enjoy the writing and the voice talent. Defeats the purpose.
But the animation in Spectacular was FANTASTIC. It was very fluid, and it made for some great action sequences. I think your problem is with the art direction, which is NOT anime.
Looks like the opposite of Spectacular - instead of a show that you fast-forwarded through the fight scenes to get to the drama, in this case it's skipping the dialogue scenes to get to what look like some spectacular action setpieces.
Although... isn't the spidermobile the biggest running gag in Spiderman lore? So we're giving Spidey a bike instead?!?
IIRC he did have a Spider-Cycle, too, and he ended up driving it into the East River.
Or maybe I'm thinking of the Spidermobile. I dunno. It's not like Pete ever had a driver's license!
It gets worse. Iron Man will be using his anime voice actor and not his Avengers voice actor. So more of that beautiful monotone performance that we all loved in the Iron Man dub!
Aimed at kids, horrid punch lines. Alas not my Spider-Man. I still have my nostalgia though. I guess there is a chance, someday, there will be a Spider-Man cartoon I'll enjoy.
