Fox sets 'Axe Cop' for latenight toon block
Animation Domination HD nabs rights to Internet vid sensation
The network has acquired rights to the Internet vid phenom "Axe Cop," which revolves around an ax-wielding police officer and his loyal allies. The plan is to order six 15-minute installments of the series for the Animation Domination HD block that Fox hopes to launch in the first quarter, with the shows running on air and on digital platforms.
Nick Weidenfeld, head of Animation Domination HD, said he sees the initial episode order as a pilot of sorts, allowing them to figure out the heart of the show. He's now looking for a writer to adapt the concept created in 2010 by Malachai Nicolle, who was then 5 years old, and his adult brother Ethan Nicolle.
Weidenfeld, a former Adult Swim exec, had his eye on "Axe Cop" from the time he started scouting properties for Animation Domination HD earlier this year. The segs will be produced directly through Animation Domination, which is housed at the Fox network.
"It's rare that you find something that feels both so new in its tone and content but also so fully formed," he said. "To me it was very clear that 'Axe Cop' has potential to be a larger franchise."

If they don't get their fair share of this, this doesn't need to be fucking made.
I find it highly amusing that a concept created by a 7 year old has to be shown in a late night block.
Please please please please let there be a Dr McNinja cross-over
ok. reading what the excerpt from this article says...it worries me. specifically: "Nick Weidenfeld, head of Animation Domination HD, said he sees the initial episode order as a pilot of sorts, allowing them to figure out the heart of the show. He's now looking for a writer to adapt the concept..." the heart of the show? the heart of the show is the 5 year old writing it. A writer...to adapt the insane imagination of a 5 year old? ..yeaaahhh.. and then there's this: "It's rare that you find something that feels both so new in its tone and content but also so fully formed," he said. "To me it was very clear that 'Axe Cop' has potential to be a larger franchise." ....so new in its tone...content fully formed?? wtf is he talking about. it's the unhindered wandering chaos of a child's imagination! seriously. i'm starting to wonder if they "get it" ya know?
He probably got fired from Adult Swim when he began to speak less like a crazy potato-gun firing maniac from Atlanta, and more like he should be drinking nettle tea and mineral water in a Hollywood office with copy like that.
Hollywood already made something with this gimmick. The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl, directed by Robert Rodriguez and based on a story by his kid son. In fact, I've actually suggested Rodriguez to direct an Axe Cop movie in the past.
Rocket Rodriguez, shouldn't you be doing your homework instead of prowling the internet?!
It will be intriguing to see if Fox has the patience to see this idea through. I somehow doubt it, but that might also mean we'll get to see a swathe of really awful and mean reality shows like that Paradise Island show where America got to see real couples fall apart, that VH1 show about the gold digger and that murderous Canadian, or more "(minority) Family Guy" spin-offs.
i bet they can it pre-production and/or at the pilot stage.
fox needs to put america's most wanted back on the air; with fring about to leave and sunday being the way it is, it was the only good thing to watch on that channel :(
They could just give Cops the "meta" treatment with little quips appearing throughout the usual "tubby cop chases a cracked out redneck in a sleeveless metal shirt" scene, and call it something eye-rollingly clever like "Cop-Up Video."
Anyone else think this sets an interesting precedent? Webcomics are being adapted for TV now! No idea how common this will become, but are there any webcomic series you'd like to see adapted?
Personally, I think a Gunnerkrigg Court animated series on Nick, if given the same attention and care as Avatar and Korra with regards to writing and animation, could be amazing.
Anything but Sonichu. As it stands, I don't think gag-a-day webcomics like Penny Arcade (beloved though they may be) would make the transition to TV well. See how well CAD did with its animated series. Something with a concrete story and cast of characters - Weapon Brown, for instance - would work better.I don't know Gunnerkrigg Court or many other webcomics, so feel free to clue me in on any good ones out there.
There are so many great webcomics out there. Gunnerkrigg is a fantastic long-form fantasy webcomic about a girl attending a prestigious British academy the size of a city, which is filled with advanced technology, and which is always teetering on the brink of war with the gods, monsters, and other fantastical beings who inhabit the magic forest surrounding the court. The series has a structure that would be pretty easily adapted to TV, with stand-alone chapters which contain threads of long, drawn-out arcs. Great characters, excellent writing and ever-evolving art, and it has Neil Gaiman's seal of approval! http://gunnerkrigg.com/index2.... (All the chapters are listed at the bottom.) Enjoy!
THERE'S GONNA BE AN AXE COP CARTOON! And I shall enjoy the heck out of the 5 episodes Fox shows before cancelling it!
I hate me some Munchkin. The only way it could get worse is if they released "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" Munchkins. On the other hand, "Rubbing Hoods: Men in Tight Munchkins" Munchkin would be "awesome".

It's truly impressive how you can turn anyone's posts from a basic comment into sexual inuendo, just by having you post them.
Kudos, sir.
At least it let us all see what it would be like if we let our five year old nephews DM a tabletop RPG.

Amen that! Especially because he walked you into it over the course of a whole novel. Rogue wizard uses forbidden necromancy to resurrect a T-Rex skeleton in a Chicago museum, and ride it cowboy-style into battle against baddies? Yes please!
Oh good grief.Look, Axe Cop is freaking awsome! I say nothing in any way to the contrary, but you should be able to realize that part of it's awsomeness is how unconventional it is. "A web comic written by a 5 year old drawn by his adult brother" now 3 things are going to happen, 1) That kid is gonna grow up, 2) once Dark Horse started printing new material you know there was a corporate grab 3) now that FOX is developing a series it's gonna be all down hill from here.
But hey, Kudos to the Nicolle bros. and however much cash they can brag while the getting is good.
Agreed - they're getting in while they still can. I seem to recall Ethan Nicolle saying that when it stops getting fun for them to do, they're gonna stop. (After all, odds are they could always work on something else anyway, or Ethan could do his own project. If anything Axe Cop has showcased his artwork to the world pretty well.)
But yeah. I'm concerned though especially given it's being marketed in a timeslot directed more at adults. Axe Cop is kinda fundamentally all-ages (albeit violent all-ages) if only because it's being written by a kid.
