The Avengers Cartoon Is in Trouble, Loki Sought for Questioning

And just like that, our streak of all awesome nerd news comes to an end.

A lot of you guys have sent me the rumor that the unbelievably great Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes cartoon might be getting canceled, as based on this article from ComicBookMovie.com. Now, I’ve repeatedly said how little I trust CBM, but this article is different for two reasons: 1) it actually backs up its claim with quotes and sources (from other sites, so they’re less likely to be made up) and 2) I’ve confirmed this with my sources as well.

The deal is this: Avengers EMH is not actually doing that well on Disney XD, so after this second season airs, a whole new Avengers cartoon will begin, possibly connected to Ultimate Spider-Man (chances of it being called Ultimate Avengers: really fucking high). While CBM is quick to blame newly appointed Marvel TV head honcho Jeph Loeb — and boy, has he fucked over the Avengers in the past — it’s not entirely his doing; Disney obviously wants a show with higher ratings, and feels that an Avengers cartoon should be doing better. I can’t blame them for that.

That said, this news depresses me immensely. Immensely. Avengers EMH isn’t just one of my favorite cartoons ever, it’s actually my favorite version of the Avengers ever. I’ve said before that I’d trade the live-action movie for 10 more seasons of the cartoon, and now I wish I could. The fact that the perfect cartoon adaptation of Marvel’s biggest franchise could fail — right as a live-action movie is coming out — is incredibly sad, and proof that we don’t live in the best of all possible nerd worlds.

But I’ve posted this not just to moan, but to see if there’s something we can do. I don’t think internet petitions have ever accomplished anything, and I doubt if all the adults watching Avengers sent Marvel a cupcake or something to show our fandom that it would achieve anything either, since Marvel and Disney want kids watching. So the only way that we can save the show is by getting its ratings up. This might be impossible, but my god, let’s try.

Watch the show. Make your children watch the show. Make your nephews and nieces and younger siblings watch it. Watch it on Netflix, too. Buy the admittedly shitty DVDs (I am) for yourself and every single person you know. If Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes suddenly starts raking in cash and viewers, then maybe Marvel and Disney will let it continue a bit longer.
