Sorry if I'm running a little behind on TR today. See, the problem is that I watched this fan-made, anime-style Star Wars cartoon by the legendary Otaking (who also made the Doctor Who anime, if you'll recall), and it was so awesome than when I saw it I actually when into a little catatonic shock. The fact that it's all space battles between Rebel and Imperial pilots makes it even better, in my opinion, if not more authentic-seeming. About the only thing it's missing is a 15-year-old Chinese pop star for the main hero to lust inappropriately after. Thanks to everyone who sent this in!
More links from around the web!
Well, the TR poster upthread said he asked and got OtaKing's approval, and says people can email OtaKing to verify. {shrug}
I think you're backwards. The original video was posted and then removed from OtaKing's account. Your link is not.
At the risk of leeching off my own comment: a Topless Roboteer downthread posted up an apparently OtaKing-approved version with sound effects and new music from KotOR. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tBM2ZfncoU
Here's a supposedly OtaKing-approved version with actual sound-effects and music from KotOR, created by a TR poster upthread.
My guess is (1) the bomber was actually nap-of-the-asteroiding in for a kill when she ran into opposition; and (2) clearly she's bloodthirsty crazy, so might be the sort to think she's awesome enough to fight dedicated hardcore fighters like the X-wing and win. (And (3), she was awesome enough to fight dedicated hardcore fighters like the X-wing and win, so why not?)
A lot of that was due to his production designers. Although I agree, we shouldn't hate Lucas.
Ooo! That was a great update! If OtaKing reads the thread, I hope he'll be happy to see how many people like it despite it still being a work in progress.
Oh, it has plenty of fun! For Space Nazis I mean. {g} (I thought I should put your typo to good use. I agree with the original intent.)
Actually, TY was agreeing that it ought to be animated like this guy has done, not CG'd the way Gareth guessed an official Star Wars anime would proceed. Edited to add: in hindsight, it just occurred to me that you may have been being sarcastically agreeing with TY. If so, {bow!}
The TIEs are actually Mobile Armors. But this isn't revealed until the mid-season upgrade. Then the title credit sequence will be updated.
In that case, as badassed as the pilot of a small unshielded target crammed with explosives needs to be!
Saw it before it was taken down - I would watch the HELL out of this! I'm really digging the anime vibe, and of course, since I'm a female TIE fighter pilot in the 501st Legion, I thought it was badass that they showed chick pilots as well. :) Someone throw some money at this guy!
See, it was a private video that the creater showed to a limited audience, and someone reuploaded with added music. It wasn't intended for the general public yet. Looks like someone talked the uploader into deleting it, or he chose to did it because of remorse and/or backlash.
This was the personal project of a single person who had been working on it in his spare time over the course of a number of months, not a full studio with financial backing.
He had been working on it and posting it there for critique for a few months without it leaking. It was on one of the slower boards. It's kind of irritating though because while people like the writer of this article know OtaKing made it they failed to notice that the version they are posting is not hosted on his personal youtube channel. The version he was posting on 4chan was not finished and had no music or sound and the clips are not arranged in a set order yet.
That was the best fucking thing I have ever seen. I can't wait to see what he does with it before it's "done". Can you imagine how Endor would have gone if the Imperials were actually this competent? Goddamned Endor... ::nerdy sob::
I can appreciate what you're saying about it being one-sided, but in this particular case, that's kind of appropriate. I mean, a Nebulon-B, a couple CR90s and a handful of Gallofrees would be very quickly overwhelmed by even *one* Imperial-class Star Destroyer. A full fighter wing on each, compared to the perhaps two dozen rebel fighters they crammed into the EF76, even if they rejiggered the hanger bays to empty out under the main strut to accommodate more of the the larger X and Y wings and oops wait, sorry guys I have to stop typing now because my dick actually fell off.
This is one of the coolest things I've seen all month, don't get me wrong. But seeing as how I'm a nerd, I do have criticism: Why did they send out any fighters in the first place? They had three star destroyers, and the rebs only one frigate and a couple corvettes escorting three transports. Maybe they could have escaped, true, but a bunch of little TIE's isn't going to stop that. Even if you ignore that, why were the bombers going after the fighters? The bombers are made to go after cap ships. (I played TIE Fighter, and thus am an expert at early-Rebellion Imperial small craft tactics.) Just one could take out the corvettes - they only take six torpedoes to kill. ...Now I want to play Tie Fighter.
An Interdictor class Star Destroyer! That's the one with the big spheres. The spheres have gravity well projectors that prevent other ships from jumping to hyperspace. http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Immobilizer_418_cruiser And I can't believe it took this long to see a TIE fighter launch. I have been wondering how they launched and landed since I bought my first toy TIE fighter.
This was infinitely better than DETOURS, which we all tried to watch a few weeks ago. Hey, DETOURS guys, this is what something that doesn't suck looks like. Watch it a couple of times and take notes. If the crew that did this doesn't have a deal for some web-isodes by the end of the month the everything sucks.
Finally watched the entire vid, and it was great. I also loved how the Empire was kicking ass! That will teach those Rebel scum.
Not going to take that bait, but Lucas spent many more years making SW suck than he ever did making it great.
I really want to play the shit out of my old Tie Fighter game now, if I can find it. Gah.
Holy Shit, even though the video only last 14 seconds before it crapped out, I am already in love. This makes me hate George Lucas even more.
If, like me, the soundtrack imposed on the video made you want to rip your ears off despite the visual awesomeness here's a much better version with suitable sfx added to otaking's work: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tBM2ZfncoU&feature=player_embedded Quoted from the video's description: Star wars animation originally uploaded by otaking77077. I saw it posted on reddit and thought it could use some SFX and fitting music!The music is from the first Knights of the Old Republic.BTW I contacted otaking77077 for permission to put make this public before I posted this video, and thought I'd share his message to me for everyone here to read:"Re:SFX for your Star Wars projectHello there!Haha, that is really rather excellent. I did grin quite creepily when I heard the first TIE sound effect... recognised the AT-AT walking sound too!I won't ask you to take it down, though I really am trying to keep it low profile since it's rough and unfinished (about 30 people have been helping critique it on the 4chan /m/ mecha board, so it was supposed to be only them seeing it until it was complete, but then it got posted on 109, Twitter etc and flew out of control).Maybe if you could slap a disclaimer in the title or info, saying how it is completely work in progress?Thanks for having the decency to ask, as well. You are a true gentlemen!Feel free to stop by /m/, which is where I'll probably be doing future updates. I've been getting some excellent feedback (this version is the third revision and much better than the first one thanks to comments) from there, and will welcome any suggestions!Paul J."
Neither do bombers or interceptors. Only the TIE Advanced and TIE Defender had shields.
Makes sense. The clones were the fighter pilots in Ep III as well. Why not make SOME of the TIE fighters pilots clones as well?
Wow, that was pretty but I would have had the focus on pilots and their facial expressions be the X-Wings instead. I mean, certainly there's some better potential there, isn't there?
