These two came through training together and still choose to spend most of their time in each other's company. Their sibling-like relationship is reinforced by their shared nerd tendencies - she deals with biology and chemistry, he's a whiz at the technical side of weaponry. The Hollywood Reporter describes the pair as "bickering," which I imagine will result in lots of snappy repartee that will endear them to the audience before one or both of them is killed in the most sadistically Whendonesque manner possible. That's an easy joke, and I'd feel bad about making if I didn't think it would prove to become 100% accurate at some point.

I want to smell a Firefly/Fringe concept but instead I smell a Smallville/House monster.
I really hate to say this because it's pretty much a spoiler, but they all but TELL you how Agent Coulson is still alive IN The Avengers. I didn't notice this until my third viewing (after I'd read the Secret War Marvel Comics Universe event), but it was incredibly obvious when I did notice it.1) In the beginning of the movie, when Agent Coulson is visiting Tony Stark, Tony responds sarcastically by saying "You've reached the *life model decoy* of Tony Stark..." (emphasis mine).
2) Life model decoys are a big thing in the comic books. They've also been a way to "resurrect" dead characters in the comicsverse.
3) In the first scene on the carrier with Coulson, Steve Rogers, and Bruce Banner (before the carrier is airborne), Black Widow approaches Agent Coulson and says (emphasis again mine)."They need you on the bridge; they're starting the *face trace.*"
4) Step four: connect the dots, geeks (lovingly)! They were putting the finishing touches on Phil Coulson's life model decoy on the carrier, to be used at the correct moment to give the Avengers that push they needed. Nick Fury is manipulative to the end, but he accomplished what he needed to save the world.
Yeah. I tried telling people this the moment the movie ended, and nobody online or in the real world would believe me.
Further, I wouldn't be shocked if the LMD of Coulson eventually becomes The Vision.
The explanation for how he is alive?
He passed out from blood loss. Samuel Jackson realized it was more useful to pretend he was dead and faked the whole thing while Coulson recouped in the hospital.
In terms of comic book resurrection it's so simple it's almost like they planned it that way and just put so much effort into acting like he was dead for cheap publicity.
@Umbra_di_Angelo I've been against Coulson returning since this concept was announced, but eh, I can dig the new kids if they're well acted/written. I just hope they don't cast people that amount to being interchangeable with those from a CW teen show.
Loved Iain on the Fades and really wish that show would get picked up for another season, one hell of a cliffhanger. Problem is he's on a Joss Whedon show now...which I know is just invites for flaming but man...cannot stand that guy.
Gee, people keep asking how agent Coulson will return. The idea that the show will predate the events of AVENGERS is a decent one. But if they choosed NOT to go that route, all it will take to get Phil up and running again are three letters: L. M. D.
I'm hoping the cast is going to be a little more diverse thanClark Gregg, Ming Na, and a bunch of twenty-something whitebreads. Where are the bright young people of color SHIELD would need to successfully operate globally?
Given Whedon's penchant for recasting actors in different roles, perhaps this would be a good time to bring back Richard Brooks?
@da_bearon I believe there's two or three other main cast members to be revealed, so I'm crossing my fingers that they won't be pretty white dudes at the very least.
Well, I guess I'd better get comfortable with these being my favorite characters ever. I always fall for the nerdy ones. Agent Fitz there will probably be the latest in a long, long line of my tech nerd loves, dating all the way back to Izzy from Digimon.
I assume it would take place before The Avengers.
I also assume it will last 1 season.
Oh, so it's Castle at S.H.I.E.L.D. with a little Buffy thrown in.
Predictable.
Don't fuck this up with your crappy TV tropes, Whedon.
Bear in mind, I loved Avengers, but that was also because Whedon had someone saying "no" some of the time. I don't want to see a purely Whedon Marvel show... Not after what he did to Astonish X-Men, which I absolutely hated.
I can't wait for this but I'd rather have them resurrect Coulson in some absurd way rather than this be a prequel of sorts.
@zombies8myballs a million times yes. it doesnt even need to be absurd. whether the intent was for him to have not died or not it wouldn't be hard for them to just say fury lied and leave it at that.
The Avengers movie had an extra short episode about the shield agency. The two characters sound a lot like the characters in the short. I guess that was some kind of teaser for the show then?
@GeneralTekno @js16nite Me too - they had a good rapport. I'd like a TV show about that. With the actors in the one-shot though.
I'm betting this takes place before The Avengers.
I'm so looking forward to this show. Dexter, TWD and SHIELD will be my three must watch shows.
Huh. I am okay with this, as their characters sound interesting. Add them to the already awesome roster of Coulson and SHIELD Agent Mulan, and this show is gonna be schaweeet.
@realaregula "Agent Mulan," you made me choke on my drink, you win a gold internet.
@Lithroe :) Why, thank you! I shall put it on the wall and stare at it proudly.
Interesting note, according to whedon, in the commentary on avengers, noted that he wasn't planning to kill Coulson. Then he walked into a meeting with Kevin Feige, and was basically told "you know we have to kill phil, right." He actually didn't want to do it, because he knows he is becoming known for that, and doesn't want to get stuck in the same rut as someone like M. Night, and his stupid twists.
So does that mean Whedon will also drop the following predictable Whedonisms?
* Waif-like girl who can kick ass, probably with a lot of spin-kicks.
* The protagonists giving the bad guys a cutesy nickname or reference title.
* Snappy sitcom banter when it's not appropriate.
* Surprise Lesbian!
There are more. I think the banter drives me craziest. It's fine in some small doses, but he tends to have this issue where he has people trading snarky comments in the middle of crisis situations, and it gets old, fast. None of his characters seem to be able to speak in any voice other than Joss Whedon's. He writes like Diablo Cody.
The Avengers was great. He a lot like George Lucas; He's a skilled writer and director when he has someone to say "no" to him every once in a while.
@nix.nightbird @TheRealDE12 Wait, are you saying there was a surprise lesbian in the Avengers movie? How did I miss that!?
@js16nite @nix.nightbird @TheRealDE12
I think that was one of the things he was vetoed on. He was probably like, "Hey, can we have Maria Hill come out as a lesbian in the third act?" and Avi Arad said "NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!"
"We save that for the sequel."
@nix.nightbird @TheRealDE12 I think most of those are good things. I like the inappropriate banter myself, and who's not up for a surprise lesbian? ... well... at least among straight men and lesbians.
but i do see your point, if no one ever said no to him avengers could have been a disaster. whatever happened with avengers needs to be duplicated in everything he does i think.
@TheRealDE12 hes already become that in regards to people expecting him to kill off well liked characters for shock value
