II really enjoyed the first film but i've always been a Muppet lover. Really they need to focus more on the style of the original Muppet Show, as in dealing with the insanity of everything. It showed in the last movie with "Am I a Man or a Muppet" with just crazy stuff to break up the seriousness.
The second new Muppets movie has a premiere date of December 20th, 2013, which means all the rumors we've been hearing are probably true and probably going to stay true. These include:
More links from around the web!
Hopefully Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem get an actual SONG in this one. I don't give a toss about anything else.
And more Sam the Eagle please.
The chickens performing "F*** You" in the first ons caused me to laugh harder and longer than I have at anything else in years.
All the "I hate Segal" "I hate Amy Adams" comments. These movies are for kids. If you wanted Oscar caliber acting and gravitas, you went to the wrong movie.
@Nicnac The original show was for kids, too... but it was funny (and remains so today). I'm straining to think of a truly great gag beyond Animal's group therapy session in the new movie.
Basically, the writers need to channel Jerry Juhl a bit more and cut back on the whimsy. Juhl really gave the characters some bite while retaining their innocence, and no one's been able to write anything remotely funny for Kermit since he passed.
@spidermanjedi @step5555 @Nicnac Oh yah no doubt. I don't disagree with this. I have a problem with people here being upset at Segal and/or Adams for their acting and/or roles. Going to a muppet movie for good acting points more to a problem with the viewer than the actors.
@Nicnac Um...I really like the movie, but this argument makes no sense. It seems to suggest that you should hold movies for children to a lower standard, which is nonsense.
@Charlie Incorrect. Segal acted for little kids, not for some people in here who wanted a Denzel performance or something. The movie was great for kids, and great for adults who could let themselves become little kids again. Same for Adams. Yes, she reprised her Enchanted role because, again, it was a role for little kids.
I see people here slating the first film, slating Amy Adams (one of the best actresses around) in the first film and slating Jason Segel in the first film. As for Walter being a Mary Sue - a Mary Sue whose amazing talent is whistling? Quite simply, you are all crazy. Or you're all Frank Oz. Either way, I look forward to this, I thought the first film was joyous.
@Charlie There can never be enough Amy Adams in ANYTHING if you ask me.
But yeah, it may have been a tad too wistful and not as manic/anarchic as the Muppets have been in the past, but I thought it was mostly wonderful too. And I don't use the word wonderful for hardly anything that isn't a Studio Ghibli or a Pixar movie.
The last movie felt like a Muppet fan-fiction, complete with a classic case of Mary Sue (Walter). The song "Pictures In My Head" and the whole gathering of the crew was the only good parts. After that, we focus far too much on the non-Muppets and the Mary Sue.
@SpindashShoryuken Interesting... the wife and I agreed that Segal did a good job staying OUT of the focus and making the movie mostly about the muppets.
You probably saw the wrong film.
@Nicnac @SpindashShoryuken The movie only got greenlit because Jason Segel talked Disney into making it and got Amy Adams to costar. They would only make the movie if recognizable faces had a big part.
That said I agree with Nicnac, because I thought they pretty much just set up the movie then got out of the Muppets' way for much of the rest.
My excitement at a confirmed release date is tempered somewhat by the knowledge that it's at least four months before I will actually get to see it. Damn you, Disney, and your staggered release dates. I'm not still going to care about Wreck-It Ralph in February!
@Lady-Rainicorn To be fair, though, Wreck-It Ralph was a pretty fun flick. I'd see it again.
If it's a Great Muppet Caper homage, I hope they remember the canonicity of that film. It's clearly not in the "real" Muppet canon but instead in the "Muppets making a movie with them playing versions of themselves" canon.
- "Jason Segel will not star"
- "Fight [sic] of the Conchords' Bret McKenzie will be composing the songs again."
Both good news. Perhaps Jemaine could star? Jason Segel never seemed to sing the songs quite right (and his godawful acting didn't help either).
... sigh. I know a movie-length version of the TV show doesn't make much sense, but I never cared for the movies and this isn't likely to change that. Everything from Kermit's characterisation (as the last sane man on the planet surrounded by a crew of maniacs as opposed to a more traditional leading man / hero) to the use of the full cast is just... better... in the TV show format.
Doing another one like this just seems like it'll keep all the characters I like (Animal, Bunsen and Beaker, Statler and Waldorf, the Chef) mostly off screen once again.
Plus, I really don't need another musical. Just let it be a comedy, already.
Let's see... my daughter will be about 16 months old when this comes out. So I may break the whole "babies at movies" taboo. Awesome news, because The Muppets was just a wonderful movie.
It...It won't have Walter in it, will it? Because I don't want Walter to be in it.
