As one of the smart ones who scooped up the original model of the 60GB PS3 when Sony put it on clearance, I have to say... I really, really, really couldn't care less about this one. The PS3 has a good five years left in it, and this past generation basically upgraded gaming as far as I care to take it for the forseeable future.
And, yeah... hopefully they won't decide to turn the gaming decision into a money sink for the sake of winning a format war again.
@FabioRezende Given recent trends, I'm inclined to doubt it. Jamming PS3 hardware into a new system would probably add $100 to the bottom-line cost. They learned their lesson when the combination of backcompat and the Blu-Ray player turned their launch into a fiasco last time around.
(Also... if they're launching head-to-head with Microsoft, this is gonna be UGLY. Sony hasn't shown a history of doing well when they launch in close competition with a competitor's system, as witnessed by the Wii kicking their ass up and down the street last time)
When will companies learn that no one gives a shit about the system itself, it's all about the release games. Game titles move units, they are basically just displaying their logo with this commercial.
@East_Threadly Overall Sony has shown that there better system or well multi-media designers overall though. But I learned my lesson getting caught up in PS2 launch nonsense, easier to wait a year or so for the good games to come out.

@East_Threadly Sony is the one exception to the rule - people bought the PS2 almost entirely for its DVD functionality for, oh, the first eight or nine months (the joke was that the minigames on various DVD movies were the most often-played titles on the PS2 after SSX). They tried to repeat that trick with the PS3, but it didn't pay off other than killing off HD-DVD.
(They also tried that trick with the PSP, but, well, we've all agreed not to speak of the UMD disaster ever again.)

This nonsense about locking out used games and forbidding rentals seems a little crazy. But I haven't played a video game since the last Monkey Island, so I have no frame of reference apart from my brother's playing.

consoles may have caught up to PCs in terms of capability but I still like being able to take apart a game and modify it
and not just to give all the characters bigger breasts

@Gallen_Dugall Consoles always catch up with PCs when they launch. And then they fall behind very rapidly.

That being said, I'm one of those people who questions why we really need a next generation of video game consoles, if only because I'm the kind of person who thinks overly realistic graphics & gameplay are actually kind of ruining games these days...But I can't deny that part of me isn't excited. We'll just have to wait & see...
