It's more a proof-of-concept reel directed by stuntman Jesse V. Johnson, and Latino Review is treating it like it's hot stuff.
Me, I think it's what Zack Snyder might do in his most disappointing moments. The Nazi stuff cutting to present day L.A. is literally the most obvious thing to do with WW, and the fighting has decent choreography but looks too fiddled-with in post.
I'm willing to bet most of you commenters have better trailer ideas, if not necessarily the same resources to put one together. Let's hear 'em.
More links from around the web!
First of all, why is she fighting Nazis? This isn't the Silver Age and she's not Captain America. Also, she's almost as strong as Superman, very damage resistant, and can fly at half the speed of light. Nazis are not a challenge for her.
She could FLY up to those planes and rip them in half. But noooooooo... EVERY live-action Wonder Woman is just a remake of the TV show, which was a weak take on the earliest Silver Age version of the character. She is SO much more than just a girl who can do spin-kicks.
And what's with the lame fighting moves? WHY IS IT that every time I see a female fighting in a movie, she's doing this lame luchadore stuff, fighting like a WWE superstar? I'm talking about all the moves that involve leaping up and wrapping her legs around guys to pull them to the ground. Hurricanranas, 619s, etc... WHY is this the way females have to fight? Why can't she get in there and throw some real punches?
She doesn't seem like Wonder Woman. She seems like an action spy female character from some thriller. No real powers to speak of... Just a lot of jumping, kicking, and posing. BLEH.
Make Wonder Woman TV/Movie live action like this: Write as if you're writing a Superman movie, but without heat vision. She's the strongest female character in the DC Universe, the best melee fighter in the DC Universe, and has way more powers than the bracelets and lasso.
I have to disagree with your assessment...and not just because this is a hell of a lot better than the Wonder Woman pilo—
Actually, scratch that. This is actually better than three out of the four known WW TV pilots. Even all of them, if you have a low tolerance for 70s cheese.
To be fair, pummeling Nazis to pummeling goons in present day L.A. is all I ever wanted from a Wonder Woman movie. Anything more original and I expect they'd fuck it up. In fact, only thing I wasn't too sure of was the actress didn't look Amazonian enough, but as a trailer, this looked every bit as fun as it should have been!
Open in a mystical looking aquatic palace, as a group of men burst in wearing armor, accompanied by a young, dark haired, clean shaven man. He paces around a table populated by other attractive young people dressed in ancient Greek clothing.
“We have been forgotten. Consigned to the dustbin of history. They blaspheme us. They mock us. They believe us to be myths, fairy tales, legends… “
He stops before a man seated at the head of the table. In the background, you see a throne and a trident hanging above it. The seated man speaks, “It is as it should be, Brother. This is their age.”
“It doesn’t have to be…”
Cue a montage:
A tanker ship being wrecked by a giant sea creature
A ‘man’ (one of the soldiers with the hooded man) wrecking a group of elite soldiers and support vehicles with nothing more than a sword, javelin and shield
The doors to an ancient Greek temple burst open and an army of winged creatures burst out.
A group of women in ancient Greek dress and armor lined up for battle.
A regal feminine voice says, “They will be defenseless. One of us must warn them. One of us must go to their world.”
Scenes of these amazons fighting in a coliseum.
Several warriors lying unconscious on the dirt, while a hooded woman peels back her cloak revealing our lead, Diana.
“I will go.”
Cue Title card
End with an image of Diana in costume leaping towards a hydra armed with a sword and a torch.
Coming… never, because seriously, this is Warner Brothers. We're never getting our shit together.
Rot in Hades, My Voice Nation.
Freaking seriously, that is the most awesome pitch for a superhero movie ever, not just Wonder Woman. When we put the WB execs against the wall I'll kill anyone who stands in the way of you leading a Wonder Woman franchise.
@ComradeDread1 Hell yes. You'd think Legendary could manage this after Wrath of the titans, Jack teh Giant Slayer, Pacific Rim and Godzilla.
Besides the Jaded feeling when we see female characters take down tons of characters, I think the problem here is that she is trying too hard. This is Wonder Woman. She should have unbelievable strength. She shouldn't have to do fancy moves and hit an average person more then once. The over-fancy moves makes her seem more weak.
@Someguy But isn't that precisely why some people think Superman is boring? I liked seeing her fight like there were real stakes involved. The idea that see should just walk through a line of gun-toting nazis dispatching all with a couple of karate chops doesn't seem like it would be entertaining.
@James.k.Polk @Someguy Superman is boring if all he does is fight common criminals. He's less boring fighting Darkseid. Wonder Woman fighting Giganta, Ares, Circe, or Hercules isn't boring.
@James.k.Polk @Someguy Indeed! And as far as "reinvisionings" go, making her powers/fighting style closer to Achilles than Superman is a lot more interesting and truer to the character. (Moreso than, say, "Ally McBeal crossed with the Punisher")
@Ranchoth @James.k.Polk @Someguy Well that kind of my point. Yes I want a challenged Wonder Woman. I want to see her at a level equal to her potential. In most of those clips you could have put Chuck Norris in Camo in most of those scenes and it would have looked fine. She deserves enemies worthy of her. Unless they all were Super Nazi soldiers. I'd rather seen her punching out Nazi through a tank.
@Someguy Not the original WWII Wonder Woman. Before they made her into a female Superman. Remember, she could be subdued by just tying her hands.
@Someguy Very good point. You don't see Superman going through all this hooplah to take bad guys down.
I was also disappointed that they couldn't resist the tough female character cliché of hitting a guy in the balls.
well observed, sometimes less is more. I think it has to do with the director being a stunt and fight guy.
I'd to a shot for shot remake of the Wonder Woman animated movie from a few years ago. If not that take the first 12 issues of the New 52 Wonder Woman and use that as a script.
I never understood people who make most comic book movies, you have like a million years of stories already written that can be picked thru and pick the best ones and have someone write a script from it. Instead they come up with some crazy stuff like the too visually dark Green Lantern movie or Superman Returns.
@miketen10 I want to write an Animal Man film that mixes tones of 60's psychedelic sci-fi like Fantastic Voyage with the sweet practical effects of John Carp's Thing. But I can't imagine not borrowing from the books for story, because every run has at least one cool theme being explored.
-I think this looks entirely too polished, I'd rely less on slo-mo and more on 'realistic' hardcore takedowns.
-Less 'bright' colors, more dingy. Except possibly her costume, mmmmaybe keep that bright instead of the leathery red/blues, tone down the combat panties, leading to my next note:
-I wouldn't do modern/present day action at all, just set the entire film in the 'simpler, easier' days of World War 2. Nazis and Steve Trevor, and a dash of Greek gods for flashback purposes and some worshipping/interactive stuff on Themyscira. You know, to set the tone for her heritage and the like. Keep it to a battle skirt deal, costumewise, a little armor (breast plate, etc). Maybe give her a sword in addition to her lasso.
-Big bad: Nazi Dr. Psycho is Hitler's best friend, but in the end, Ares is behind it making him the real big bad. Something like that.
I'm always amazed by the quality of these fan-made trailers. Are they students at NYU/USC or something?
btw Robot Combat League premiered yesterday and you can watch it online on syfy channel
I watched the first episode of RCL online - far better than I expected. A fair amount of maneuver and timing as well as team coordination required
@Gallen_Dugall Yea, I am actually excited to see how the fighting progresses as the league goes on. The contestants clearly have a lot of room to improve but even the initial fight between Roll Cage and Steel Cyclone was entertaining.
@Gallen_Dugall They showed that profile screen for each fighter and at least for Steel Cyclone they mentioned it had weak armor around its 'crumple zone', which from the results of the fight I'm assuming is the tummy. I also think Crash (for some reason I thought it's name was Roll Cage) had a major heigh advantage so we know they aren't all the same size.
I hope to see the controllers learn to use their strengths and hide their weaknesses and create some personality differences between the bots.
I'd really like to know the specs (although this is clearly something they want to keep secret) Roll Cage seemed to be able to take a lot more damage and Cyclone seemed to be faster. Also interested in how much redundancy there is; at first it seemed as if all the hydrolics were being fed by the same system. I could do without the pretty sparklers going off.
