• When Heroes premiered in 2006, it averaged just under 14 million viewers. The show has lost 10 million viewers in four years.
• The premiere of this season of Heroes had 5.9 million viewers, and has lost 2 million since then.
• Not only was Heroes beaten in the ratings by all other primetime networks' shows during 9-10pm EST last Monday night, but it was also beaten by cable shows such as whatever WWE show USA has on Mondays and an episode of iCarly over on Nickelodeon.
• In a tally of all primetime shows on the four major networks last week, the new episode of Heroes ranked 47th in ratings. This is behind many, many, many repeats.
• ABC just canceled Ugly Betty because it was only getting 5.3 million viewers. Admittedly, ABC is in infinitely better shape than NBC.
At the moment, NBC still hasn't decided whether it will renew Heroes for another season or cancel it, although creator Tim Kring supposedly feels optimistic. Despite the fact no one watches Heroes on TV, its DVD sales are still pretty good, and NBC's current standards of "success" might be low enough that Heroes squeaks through for another year. Rest assured I will keep you updated. (Via Wikipedia, Clique Clack, and TV by the Numbers)

I agree, it's still baffling to me that while they both had fairly comparable ratings, they canceled it the first time until, like you might inevitably do, the fans RAGED and it was brought back, it just goes to show that the NBC execs have no fucking idea how to run a network

Chuck was never canceled. There was talk of not renewing it, but it was never official shut down.
As far as Heroes goes, it's really sad the producers of that show have basically poisoned it. It was such a wonderful idea and we stuck with it for two seasons. By the third season it was becoming ridiculous and neither superhero fans nor the general public were willing to give it the attention it once deserved.

Well, after their very good first season, many of the behind-the-scenes people seemed to display an arrogant attitude of "Heroes is awesome, and therefore everything we do on Heroes is awesome, which is what makes Heroes awesome, because we're totally awesome!" That kind of circular logic makes it impossible for the showrunners to improve things, since if you think you're practicaly perfect, you reject any suggestion that maybe you could do better. They've been enthusiastically drinking their own Kool-Aid for three seasons, so it's no surprise to hear that Kring thinks he'll get renewed. As an ex-fan, I wish NBC would just put the show out of its misery so that the actors can move on to other projects. I'm still bitter about Sendhil Ramamurthy being prevented from filming that pilot with David Tennant.

Heroes in its 1st season show cased some of the best TV going, but it has fallen a long long way since then and the chances of it redeeming itself seem next to none existent.

Totally unrelated to this post - I gave up on Heroes almost immediately after the introduction of Sylad - but I'm curious as to whether or not anyone else is having odd issues with this site in Firefox.
When I come to TR in Firefox one of two things happens:
1. I get a page that's entirely blank except for the words "It works!" in bold letters at the top of the page.
2. The page loads, but with no updated content since the Pac Man bookcase post.
I've cleared my cache and etc., but the issue persists. The site loads normally in IE.

I think Heroes will get renewed. The cast keeps talking about how amazing it does overseas (no idea how), that a lot of people watch it on DVR (probably so they can fast forward through it so they can mock it without wasting an entire hour), and it's downloaded a lot illegaly.
Plus, by the end of this season it will be 22 episodes away from reaching 100 episodes.
I'm predicting that the next season will be 22 episodes long just so NBC can get a series into syndication. (even if the audience only watches the first 1/5th of it when it re-airs)
Posted 01/28/2010 at 11:45:47 AM
Geoff replied to chudleycannonfodder:
Highly serialised shows don't do well in syndication, though - look at Lost and 24, neither of which has made much of an impact in that market.
There's a reason there's always an episode of Law and Order and / or CSI on television at any time during the day; both are shows anyone can pick up and watch without keeping up, which is why they're perfect for syndication.
I could see Heroes as being one of those shows that does inexplicably well overseas, but even with DVR viewing figures added in the show would only be drawing about six million viewers. That's not too bad for NBC, but advertisers don't like DVR viewership to begin with and on a show like Heroes the theory is that a lot of the viewers are repeat-watching something they also watched live; that type of devoted fandom is common for Sci-fi shows, and most of the DVR top ten are serialised sci-fi dramas.

This varies from country to country, of course. As a whole, I'd say that ratings have dropped all over the world. I can only speak for Germany, where the show premiered with pretty impressive ratings, but then quickly began a decline. Mid Season 3, the channel intervened and moved the show out of its primetime slot, replacing it with Sargate SG-1 reruns that scored higher ratings. Over here, Heroes is getting outperformed by just about everything.
I've heard similar stories from other countries. We "international viewers" have taste, too, you know. ;) We have the same issues with Heroes as people in the USA.

Are you taking into account that Heroes is available to watch in about 4 other formats, plus DVR so there's absolutely no reason to rush home to watch it on Mondays aside from the Live Blogs. Heroes is available in the following formats for watching new episodes other than watching it on Monday's.
-DVR
-Netflix streaming on Demand (They stream new episodes every week)
-On Demand from Comcast
-NBC.com
-Hulu
The DVR rating are always higher than people that get counted in the nelson ratings and as far as I know, no one ever counts the people that watch it in the other various formats. The DVD sales are strong because people still watch the show, just not on the night it airs.
LOST's ratings have dropped too.. but it's alternative viewings for new episodes are slim in comparison.
-ABC.com
-DVR
-On Demand from Comcast
Many people think it's too much work to get caught up on shows like this so falling ratings are a given, but Hero's is at a handicap with all the options to catch new episodes. I myself caught up on the entire series by streaming everything from netflix in 2 weeks.
The show isn't bad...it just used to be great. I'm personally engaged and locked into the series. It won't get canceled because it's one of the few shows not on Thursdays that people still watch and From what I read the creators have no plans to cancel the show either. In fact this season will end with a cliffhanger.

So Ugly Betty is getting cancelled? Thats too bad.
On the subject of Heroes, I would like to see it get one more season to wrap things up but knowing the way the show has gone if Heroes were given one more season instead of quality story telling and closure they would have the heroes fight aliens and end the show with some kind of stupid cliffhanger just to give us all the finger one last time.
I hate to make light of a serious issue but at times it feels like us devoted Heroes fans are in an abusive relationship with the show and its producers.
Hey maybe the next TR contest can be what should all the actors on Heroes do after the show gets cancelled. Hayden Panettiere will have to go back to doing teen comedys and Jack Coleman will have to go back to character acting. I'm not sure about the rest of the cast. I have a feeling if Heroes does get cancelled Milo Ventimiglia will be screwed. Greg Grunberg will be fine though, he'll find something, he always does.

To be honest, it was the potential of the show, not the show itself, that people liked.
Whenever you heard people talking about this show it was always "well, now they'll do this thing..." or "the show could go in this direction..." and if it happens, it goes and happens in the blandest, most pablum way imaginable.
Watching Heroes is like reading 90's Valiant comics and that's an insult to 90's Valiant Comics...
Let's face it, a soap with people with powers could have been awesome. This had the potential to be freaking awesome...and it wasn't. Kill the dayum cheerleader already.

Season one was so good I just kept holding on, hoping it would someday return to that glory. I can't believe it took so long. Now I know why some women seem to never leave their jerk of a boyfriend.

As I "watched" the recent episode, I say it like that because normally I use it for background noise as I work on my laptop, I came up with a question for the cast.
Out of all the mockery the show has been getting, and rightly so it seems, does the cast acknowledge or even realize what the show has become? Do they not pay attention to the infinite stupid plotholes, character changes, and overall mistakes that seem to go on in each episode?
Or, do they just do it and not care? Like, does Zachary quinto come in and say "Am I good or bad this week?" and begin to recite his lines? Does Milo enter and just whine about his brother, try to call deaf people on the phone or player supeerpower roulette to see what he can do this week? Does Hayden come in and just whine about wanting a normal life, then accept being a super to turn lesbian, whine for a normal life, accept the power, cry for normality......oh for the love of God some body please shove a metal spike in the back of her head and get rid of her character.
Anyway, I'll keep watching for three reasons, to continuously mock and laugh, to have something providing noise when I need it, and because I will admit, I still enjoy the Hiro character, despite all the recent silliness.
Posted 01/28/2010 at 02:04:34 PM
Hiro was always the silly character (in his mentality), so some of the silliness with him is fine. His "I'm really just a giant kid" attitude about it all allows it to work a bit better, whereas every other character is steeped in weekly drama.

Season 4, well I just kinda save the episodes convert to avi and wait until I have a few to watch all at once, not going to bother trying to keep up.
