Hi-C still makes the same stuff, it's just called 'green tangerine' now... and instead of Slimer being on the can there's just a big green water drop looking thing. It kinda looks like they just smudged Slimer's face off. Anywho, the shit tastes the same.
You know, given that Hi-C's claim to fame was the high amounts of vitamin C in the drink (hence the name, and that distinctly tart flavor), I wonder if a spoonful of ascorbic acid powder would replicate the flavor a little more closely than the spoonful of lemonade mix. I know my local supermarket sells the stuff in the bulk aisle, so it's worth a shot.
For some reason it amused me to no end that inside the guy's fridge is Worcestershire sauce and Pepto right next to each other. Just in case the baddies in the other dimension have too much steak.
I think that's a 2 cup Pyrex Measuring cup. If I'm counting the marking right, and his hand is in scale to a 2 cup Pyrex measure...what, I do a lot of cooking.
Man, can't watch the video at work. I guess I'll have to wait until tonight.
For those complaining about the sugar, why not just add a non-sugar sweetener?
Blasphemy! Besides, there's a ton of sugar in the prepackaged Orange and Tangerine drinks and the Country Time mix. So removing that ~2 cups extra of pure-sugar really isn't going to do much to stave off the sugar coma.
The drink was great, but I'm I the only one who was mesmerized by the Dancing Darth at 6:45?

I saw these guys on Cinema Snob's last Brad Tries segment. Think it was these guys he met. That is pretty cool.
The fact that he didn't know that there's no "D" in motor oil viscosity ratings ruined this for me.
I remember Ecto-Cooler being hella expensive, so I only got it when I begged and pleaded my mom to buy it for me.
But...I will have to try this.
Amazing! If this stuff tastes correct it will be great. I barely remember it, but I do think it was good. My question here (and also to kool aid) is
WHY WHY WHY don't they REMAKE these things?I mean, it's a DRINK. It can't be that costly. Jones Soda makes turkey flavored cola. How well does that do for them. I don't think it would rake in half of what Ghostbusters & Nostalgic people who drank it long ago, would do. Small batch? ok. Internet sales only because stores are too costly? ok. No one would have a problem with it.
OR create some kind of kool aid style mix packet. And on that topic, why not Sharkleberry Fin, Great Bluedini, Purplesaurus Rex, Pink Swimmingo & etc? I never understood having to buy vintage packets of this on the internet because stingy company doesn't want money. Is making tiny portions of powder and selling them at a profit that hard?
I cannot wait to make this for my kids. They will flip, especially the 4-year-old. He is already a huge Ghostbusters fan.
Lol, it's pretty badass to see fellow GB fans appearing on my favorite websites. Congrats to the Chicago GB's and thanks for the tasty nostalgia.
You know, after watching the trailer for This Ain't Ghostbusters XXX and knowing what Slimer's ectoplasm is in that... I think I'll be skipping this drink altogether.
It's not as bad as the Ricki White/Kelly Divine version.BREAK OUT THE ANTIBIOTICS!
Thanks, guys, for all the positive reception. We hope that you'll enjoy any experimentations you do with the recipe and hope that it gives you the same sort of nostalgia it gave to us.
Was wondering if you'd be willing to put up the exact recipe here instead of us trying to guess on what type of OJ to get, how much sugar, etc. There are those of us that are baking/cooking geeks ya know. :)
I drank that shizz for pretty much the entirety of elementary school. And know what? It was effing terrible and Im glad it's gone.
I totally had those spoons when I was 9. Which is about when I was drinking a gallon of ecto cooler a day. Which is a fun coincidence.
I'm just glad they weren't completely authentic. Ecto-cooler and all the other Hi-C variants had High Fructose Corn Syrup in it. I don't need a dose of pancreatic cancer when I'm swigging nostalgia. The effects of the sugar can be ameliorated with enough ice and or water.
I've found Gatorade Rain Lime to be more than an adequate (and healthier) substitute. Has a lovely, almost luminous, clear green shade as well. Which I could have sworn Ecto-Cooler had, not that murky green.
Yeah, I thought Ecto-cooler was a lighter shade of green as well. The shade they have looks downright disgusting.
The food coloring in the tangerine and orange Hi-C mixes is what gave it the murky look. Obviously when Ecto-Cool was being manufactured only green food coloring was used. I thought they did a good job with what they had.
I wonder if you added a ton of yellow to the batch to shift the orange more to yellow and then added back blue that would get a light shade of green over just putting in green?
the Cinema Snob featured this about a week ago. Those Chicago Division guys are doing the lord's work, reverse engineering Ecto Cooler for us thirsty nerds.
As a long time www.X-entertainment.com reader I can tell you that the original Ecto Cooler was transformed into either A. Shoutin' Orange Tangerine or B. Orange Lavaburst years ago.
Ecto-Cooler was (probably) renamed Shoutin' Orange Tangergreen in 2001.Shoutin' Orange Tangergreen was renamed Crazy Citrus Cooler in 2006.Crazy Citrus Cooler was discontinued in 2007.
Yes, Ecto-Cooler was discontinued in 2007. AND YOU ALL NEVER KNEW.
We actually knew, we just were trying to be quick on the background info in order to get to the actual recipe, jokes and testimonials. Not sure why Zach decided to eventually drop that tidbit.
who says it has to be non-alcoholic, Ecto Cooler makes a great mixer, just add some vodka
I've had more than a few Midori (stone) sours that look and taste exactly how I remember Ecto Cooler. So far, less that stellar results trying to mix one myself.
