Kicking off in a special "zero issue" prologue in March written by Bendis and Aaron, Avengers vs. X-Men begins the next month with an extinction-level event barreling its way toward Earth, namely the cosmic entity of death and rebirth known as the Phoenix Force. It's looking for a new host who will possess all of its power, which may or may not be the mutant teenager Hope Summers.
Cyclops, Wolverine, Magneto and the other X-Men want to protect her and prepare her if she's to be the new Phoenix. Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man and their fellow Avengers want her handed over to them so they can figure out what to do with her and keep the world safe from a potentially fiery fate.
Suffice it to say, tensions -- and fisticuffs -- arise.
I don't know why the Avengers want the new Phoenix -- I mean, sure, the X-Men don't have that great a track record dealing with the Phoenix Force, but I don't know why the Avengers think they would do any better -- but as long as it actually features the Avengers actually fighting the X-Men, I'm in. Hell, I'm just excited that I know what this event is about. I still couldn't tell you the plot of Siege, Fear Itself or Heroic Age, but Avengers Vs. X-Men? This one I got.

god dammit - these guys are meant to the fucking saviours of humanity, but it seems like I can barely turn to look at that pretty lady with the jiggly parts before some one says something stupid and a war brakes out, just for once I'd like to see them take the star wars prequel route and have a majority of it be hand shaking and talking with maybe wolverine getting in a fight that brings both sides to their senses and come to an agreement. Is that so much to ask for?
-
That "Villains United" sounds interesting. I'll have to check it out, though I know next to nothing about DC villains.
-
Just because you didn't read them doesn't mean they didn't happen, friend.
-
Two of their biggest franchises in one space? Awesome. But which side will Storm take?
-
"We leave the masks on. It's better that way."
-
Marvel and DC still make non-crossover event books? That's like telling me MTV is showing music videos again.
-
And I haven't read any of those to be honest. I mean I thought there was at least two major events that were described specifically as X-Men Vs. Avengers pre 95'
-
Civil War... Siege... World War Hulk... Secret Invasion... (okay, they were skrulls, but before they turned, they LOOKED like the heroes...)
-
... you think this is great? What did you think of the LAST COUPLE OF TIMES they did this?
-
And to be honest, would YOU reveal your identity to someone who worked side by side with Norman Osborn? I wouldn't give a fuck if Captain America was FUCKING Victoria Hand, I don't blame him for not trusting her.
-
Cap's funding them, Stark sold the Avengers Tower for $1, and Spider-man can't get a check because he won't reveal his identity to them, or as they say, "yuk yuk yuk that Parker luck..." And yet whenever he tried to leave the team, someone(Wolverine) ALWAYS talked him out of it. I like to think Bendis is speaking through Wolverine... "look, I can't sell this title by myself... I need you here to crack jokes..."
-
How the hell do they keep coming up with excuses to do superheroes vs superheroes fighting? And as always, are the villains just going to quietly watch from the sidelines? I mean it's not like the heroes should be fighting THEM or anything.
-
Yes Rachel is still alive. She left Utopia and is at the Jean Grey School.
-
Have they ever worked out where the paychecks are coming from? Surely Wolvie isn't an Avenger for free! I mean, wasn't one of Spider-man's motivations to join up with Iron Man because he could pay the bills? I think the X-Men is a volunteer gig though...
-
Holy Shit. A post where you didn't bitch about something great. The end of the fucking world.
-
actually she's a "New Avenger" , The Cages hired her as the nanny for thier baby.
-
oh, god, is this what passes for spam now?
-
I think DC did that once, and the result was really interesting. I swear, "Villains United" should've been a stand-alone that has absolutely zero ties to the Crisis bullshit. Any title that could make a C-List Batman villain like "Catman" (frigging CATMAN!!) into a serious threat is okay in my book! XD
-
I thought they did this in about two other occasions in the past?
-
Your probably right, and there will be a 2 page spread where Cyclops is on one side optic blasting Cap in the shield, and he's just holding the line against him, not budging one inch.
-
She's nannying Luck Cage's kid in the New Avengers.
-
I thought she left the team to go be awesome by herself somewhere
-
Oh, I loved The Infinity Spatula. And how *spoiler* Thanos lost the ultimate power again because he refused to wear the "Kiss The Cook" Apron of Divinity. Of course, it didn't help much that they had this misprint in one panel where it said "Kiss The Cock". Good times.
-
Avengers wipe the floor with the X-Men, no contest. Also, I think it would be great for Jean grey to be brought back as Phoenix, just to have her join the Avengers! Screw you, X-Men!
-
How can anyone approve of this, given that a glut of cross-overs was one of the factors that ruined comics in the 90's? And I am so sick of heroes fighting each other. It's stupid and cliche and makes no sense given that by now they should all practically be on first name basis. It reminds me of that other stupid cliche of the public quickly and easily turning against a hero like Spider-Man because he (a doppelganger) robber a bank...completely forgetting all the years he's been saving their rears. How about a series where the villains fight each other, which would make alot more sense. Ah but I don't care anymore. I prefer reading old back issues anyhow.
-
Well, I agree that they're an attempt to bump the numbers, and perhaps it's too broad a stroke to say that all crossovers are intended to be a jumping on point for new readers, though there certainly are several that did seek to bring in non-comics readers. Marvel tried like hell to get non-comics fans to read Civil War, for instance. Still, just thinking about how complicated the stories of all the major crossovers from the last several years, I think you're probably right, because if they're trying to make crossovers new reader friendly, they're failing.
-
Worse: it would bring the swimsuit edition where the men wear boxers, briefs and thongs but still kept their masks.
-
Will this event bring back gratuitous 90's shots of comic book babes in bikinis?
-
Hope stayed with Scott. If you haven't noticed, Scott mostly got the former villains and borderline characters while Logan got the innocents. Scott has Magneto, Emma, Namor, Colossus (who is the new Juggernaut), Magick, Danger, Doctor Nemesis, and the like. And Hope is a borderline character herself, even without the Phoenix Force. She seems perfectly willing to take advantage of the fact that she has a mind-control/influence effect on the mutants that she helped with their powers. (Instead of normal debate, one of her team literally held a gun to Hope's head in order to help convince Hope to let Idie leave the team in order to go to Logan's school.)

Care for another sir?

~The stuff we sell is just the best Passing all consumer test Days of heaven, nights of sin Voodoo stick and sharks fin When all around you seems like hell, just one sip will make you well Multipurpose in a jar.....
-
Ugh. Another Civil War crap. Somebody get me some tonic.
-
I stopped caring about the X-Men the minute Wolverine became an Avenger..I like him much better there
-
That seems perfectly human...go figger.
-
So either of the above then?
-
Pseudo-important due to focusing on both Scarlet Witch and Hope.
-
She is definitely Great Lakes Avengers
-
Gotcha. I'm of the opinion that I really don't care if Jean comes back, she's a running joke at this point. Can't be any worse than when they killed of Cap for him only to be "lost in time".
-
Haha Bishop does a heel turn. Best description ever... If only he hit Cyclops with the X Belt.
-
i guess i have to accept the imperfection of the human condition :(
-
"Action Porn". THANK YOU! That is EXACTLY what this whole event seems to me! Nerd-pandering action-porn and not much of anything else!
-
Too bad no matter what happens none of the fights will actually matter and 4 characters are being retconned at the end.
-
Writers just can't bear to part with their beloved tittiesI MEAN CHARACTERS! XD
-
-old man voice- Well laddie, I was about your age when Spider-Man first fought Green Goblin and...-dozed off-
-
They have their OWN impossibly super-powered entity to deal with...by making sure he does his homework and stay out of trouble. XD Honestly, if this story ended up taking the Franklin Richards' approach of "let's raise this universe-destroying living time-bomb into a good person" turn, I don't know if I should cry or laugh.
-
Yup, that's about it. I always felt that whenever Bendis was placed in charge of something, his books looked like Dragonball Z ripoffs. I'm calling Captain America going on and on about "justice" with speed-lines in the background for twenty pages before going Super Saiyan. Place your bets, folks!
-
"Kicking off in a special "zero issue" prologue...". Should I consider this irrelevant, or just a simple non issue?
-
I cannot be excited about this. At all. This seems like an excuse to make the heroes fight again ala Civil War. What, is Marvel running out of villains or something? What about the Brotherhood? What about the Skrulls and Kree? What about A.I.M? H.Y.D.R.A? M.O.D.O.K? B.U.L.L.S.H.I.T, the secret branch of the evil organization F.U.C.K.Y.O.U? Damn, Marvel, why you so crazy?
-
Cyclops.die.die.die
-
I can't believe I'm saying this, but maybe Marvel should take a page out of DC's book: throw it all out the window, start over from scratch, and promote more titties. Because when you're already waist deep in shit and filth, well, might as well get your hair fucking wet!
-
Awesome! You just saved me tons of dollars that could go to something better, like my groceries and rent. Also, fuck the comics! Marvel Studios is where I'm banking MY money!
-
I don't think crossovers in general, are meant to bring in new readers. They are aimed at the current readership. It's a simple minded attempt to bump the number of comics sold.
-
The 'one chooses X-men, one chooses Avengers' is probably why they just brought in Storm.
-
Yeah, and three guesses as to who gives the new Phoenix the Rage-Suppresing Hug and/or Kiss at the end of the story. Hint: his name starts with "W" and ends with a "-olverine". Fuck! For once I'd love to see an X-Woman doing something like that. Give it to Rogue. It falls under her powers' jurisdiction, plus, hot girl on girl action! Pander to those lonely horny teenage nerds, Marvel! >:3
-
Hmmm..I see the X-Men, I see Spider-Man. I think, Secret Wars, and Spider-Man making the X-men look like chumps.....Spider-Man rawks!
-
It's the reverse for me. I just wished that pointless fucking old mummy would just fucking buy that great big farm in the sky with his beloved husband of hers. It doesn't even have to be over-glorified like Marvel has a tendency to do. Cyclops can just walk into the living room of the Baxter Building and go, "Hey Pete, sorry about your aunt. Also, I'm a douche, since that's the general concensus among nerds." You may proceed to shower me with rage if you like, but that's just how I feel.
-
More like their "Get Out of Writer's Block Free" card, Miss Destroyer of Worlds. XD
-
Yep, and they even renamed themselves the Great Lakes X-Men at one point, but I believe they changed to the Great Lakes Champions after that, when Flatman won the name in a superhero poker game.
-
If Marvel had the balls they would strech out the fight between the Avengers and the X-Men over 5 issues then just when Cyclops is about to optic blast Captain America throug Lady Liberty... They all get rushed by an army of Wolverine's and (a) Logan reveals why he can be on any team ever at all times.
-
I am going to be so happy when Captain America beats the living piss out of Cyclops.
-
I stopped and threw up in my mouth when I read "Bendis," too.
-
Sir not everyone can have Darkseids penis arrow.
-
Must be horrifying, living on Earth-616. Extinction-level events every few years? And it's the good guys going up against each other, again? Wonder how supervillains will have a field day with this.
-
And as if I hadn't written enough, I'll just add that if Rob meant that he knows about the Phoenix Force because he's familiar with the Dark Phoenix Saga, well, I don't think that's any more accessible than Seige. Basing your story on a bunch of books that came out 30 years ago isn't any more accessible than basing them on books that came out last year for someone that doesn't usually read comics. Presumably the hope for big crossovers like this is to draw in new readers, but I'm not sure this really gets at any group outside the people care if the X-Men fight the Avengers, and I think that's probably a pretty small group.
-
I understand the desire to make stories accessible, and maybe the last few weren't. Honestly, I didn't read them, though I did read up on what was happening through Wiki. Still, I can't tell if Rob's really making the point that Avengers v. X-Men is easy to grasp on its face...er, title, or if he thinks it's accessible because he has a background of knowledge in the Phoenix Force and its history. I think it's easy to grasp what the primary action is likely to be from the title, but while I'm willing to admit that Seige may not have been enjoyable if you hadn't followed Dark Reign, Secret Invasion, or the other crossovers before it, I think this takes it too far in the other direction. I know, we're dealing with capes here, but just putting all the toys in the sandbox and smashing them together isn't my idea of a compelling story. People should have to read some minor amount of background information, preferably supplied at the start of the first issue. If the information is presented in the context of what the characters are doing, all the better, but I'll take a clumsy "Here's what's happened so far" summary page at the beginning in a pinch, if it's well written. But the draw of the story should be that it tells an interesting and complex tale, not that it features people everyone knows punching each other. Crossing Aliens and Predators over into one movie could be a compelling idea, but a big AvP fight in and of itself boring. Now, this is all based on the title and the blurb, which make it sound like a shallow piece of crap. Maybe there's something more interesting going on here, and I'll be glad if there is. Still, I can't help but feel some times that I'm not looking for the same things out of comic books than the average fan. That's all well and good, but when people complain that comics aren't taken seriously and are still viewed as children's fare while ignoring masterpieces like Watchmen or Sandman, well, stuff like this is why.
-
At least color me sort of interested Since Dark Avengers ended I haven't given a crap about what's happening in Marvel other than Young Avengers and Avengers Academy. Sad when the books about teens are more interesting than the big-name heroes. I really tried to like Secret Avengers... I tried so hard.
-
But are not all members of the GLI/A Mutants?
-
I kinda agree with Jesse here. Might the old codger side of me talking, but whatever happened to superheroes being, you know, HEROES? Performing acts of heroism and putting themselves on the line selflessly for the greater good? That sort of thing? From what I'm seeing right now, they're acting like a bunch of members of a pop act bickering over who gets to sing the next lead in their next song.
-
If this event was somewhere between 4 to six issues I would be fine with it. The fact that they are going to drag it out to twelve is ridiculous.
-
She's an Avenger. Just not THOSE Avengers. (Actually, I think they're the Great Lakes Initiative now ...)
-
Get the new Daredevil. Problem solved.
-
The bigger news here is that Bendis is leaving both Avengers and Mighty Avengers!!!! Oh happy day!!!
-
Oh good. Another 8-month long event where the last couple mainstream books I enjoy have to be interrupted again by another massive crossover, which is apparently a problem that could be resolved if anyone bothered talking for two minutes. And I'm sure NOTHING WILL EVER BE THE SAME AGAIN until next time. Also, I wonder if anyone tells them that making heroes constantly bicker and feud makes them look like jerks, which is sort of the opposite of what superheroes are supposed to be.
-
*sigh!* Not again. Have I just become Marvel's ultimate McGuffin?
-
he didn't die; the head just passed out
-
Nope, he'll be on both teams. Actually, the whole event is a clone war, a bunch of Wolverines fighting each other...because he has to be in everything ever...not to worry though, I can't remember a time in Marvel's history in which a story about clones, a saga if you will, hasn't been totally awesome...
-
I think it will go the other way around, as Storm is only with the X-men because Scott begged her to. But I can't stand her as a character so I hope she gets eaten by the fire bird. But the Scott/Storm hook up happened in Astonishing that is a side book, nothing counts there with the other books.
-
I just hope Cyclops dies...but I always hope Cyclops dies...even when reading other books...for example, I keep waiting for Aunt May to walk into the room one day and say, "Peter, did you hear this Cyclops fellow died?" It would be a happy moment.
-
That is pretty close the the K.I.S.S version of what happened so good work.
-
Yep that's pretty much the last ten years or so of Marvel Comics. Nice job!
-
If this gets Wolverine off the Avengers, color me happy.
-
Yeah, I know, and this is sad. The chief problem with the X-Men is that they refute their own argument pretty much immediately.
-
Clearly the new host will be the Scarlet Witch's Uterus.
-
You do know that would do nothing in the long run...
-
I actually think this is pretty BADASS! :)
-
I forgot about that. Man that was really bad, and not that long after they killed her off in the ultimate universe. That was really poorly done.
-
It's impossible for me to believe that the smart readers here can't figure out what recent Marvel events were about. Given that most were written from a mind at a third-grade intelligence level (Bendis, Fraction), you're overthinking them. But, for everyone's benefit, here's an easy way to understand them: HOUSE OF M Scarlet Witch gets manipulated into performing some shenanigans with an alternate reality for a while, brings Hawkeye back to life and removes the powers of all the mutants that nobody really cared about in the first place. CIVIL WAR Superheroes argue for a while about how much control the government should have which leads to various shenanigans. Spiderman reveals identity. Token black hero is killed, Captain America is killed for a little while, everyone is sad and mopey. MESSIAH COMPLEX X-Men team finds a baby who looks like Jean Grey and sends her into the future with Cable. Bishop does a heel turn and takes off after them. WORLD WAR HULK Hulk shows up on earth and commits various shenanigans before getting stopped. Nothing really changes, but this sets up the Red Hulk. ONE MORE DAY Memphisto pulls some shenanigans to recon Spiderman's marriage to Mary Jane and make everyone forget him revealing his identity in Civil War. SECRET INVASION Skrulls show up and commit various shenanigans before they get stopped. Wasp dies and because he had one good media moment the mass-murdering Green Goblin is put in charge of SHIELD by President Obama. DARK REIGN Green Goblin commits various shenanigans. Nothing else much happens. UTOPIA More Green Goblin shenanigans. Beast loses his hair for some reason, but gets it back. Gets pissed at Cyclops and leaves the X-Men. SECOND COMING The baby who looked like Jean Grey shows back up again as a teenager with boobs. Cable and Nightcrawler die. SEIGE The Green Goblin pulls some shenanigans against Asgard and gets his ass kicked. The Sentry and Ares die. Somewhere around here Captain America comes back to life. HEROES REBORN Nothing much happens. FEAR ITSELF Odin's long-lost brother shows up and starts in with some shenanigans. Some people (Thor, Bucky) seem to die, but they don't really. SCHISM Wolverine decides that kids should have fun and not be subjected to fighting. No seriously, that's the plot. Yes, he put Jubilee and Kitty Pride through ninjas and robot people, but now he wants to open a school. Cyclops thinks this is dumb. They fight. There you have it. You're all caught up.
-
Can we just stop company wide crossovers please? Or at least scale them back to once every two years instead of ever six months? One nerd can only take so many "AND THE MARVEL/DC UNIVERSE WILL NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN!!!" solicitations before they give up.
-
That didn't bother me anymore than any other hero-back-from-the-dead gimmick. If there was one thing that bothered me about Secret Invasion it was how they arbitrarily killed off the Wasp at the end. It was like "oh crap we're on the last issue and we haven't killed anyone off for dramatic effect yet, lets kill the Wasp, no one cares about female super-heroines anyway"
-
Yeah he came back as the red herring in Schism, and was kidnapped by Wolverine to take him to the new school. Both teams want him because of his potential, and in the last Wolverine and the X-men he basically is stated to be the only one that can help the team out. They are building him up for something.
-
I can see a civil war between Cyclopes and Wolverine because of this. Although I also got to thinking with Emma Frosts history with her starting the Hellions group and losing them, plus her Generation X time and other students she has shown interest in, she has been shown from time to time as someone who does have a softer side for her students. If she thought she was the only person who could or should handle it, she would do whatever it takes to do it and betray anyone she felt she needed to. Emma Frost is a character who put on Phoenix's costume during Scott's therapy(?) to get what she wanted. I see no problems with her betraying both Scott and Wolverine if that what she needed to do.
-
It bugged me that they used it to being back dead characters because the real ones were skrulls. I liked it but that part killed it for me
-
Please tell me stories of the good old days where there were almost no mega events and heroes really were super. I was so young when the original Crisis happened.
-
Does Kid Omega even still exist? Last I remember he was lobotomized in a coma for the third time or something.
-
Am I the only person who thinks this is a stupid idea? I thought the whole point of the sequence where the X-Men save LA in the Generation Hope arc was to set up the fact that they aren't going to be at odds with non-mutants anymore. Why did I think that, you may ask? Because they specifically exposited that this was true. You know, if you have to throw out entire storylines of plot development to make your crossover work, you should probably come up with a new idea for a crossover.
-
Hope is with Scott and has been pretty involved in Uncanny. Her sniping Sinister in the last issue was the highlight of the book.
-
Madeline Pryor is still dead, probably, maybe. Rachel Summers has been the Phoenix host before.
-
I think that Pryor is dead again, and Rachel Grey has used the power before so maybe. Doom is possible but he is brain damaged and "good" right now, so I don't see him being involved. This seems like a X-men/Avengers only party not an entire Marvel U event. Pryor is a maybe as no one stays dead, Rachel I would say no to, as I don't seeing them making her evil and I see this as a book where that happens. So probably stick to Avengers and X-men, not their villains, so I am going to keep my bet on Kid Omega
-
I was really disappointed that Rachel just went off with him. I mean you'd think with her whole lost family angst she'd cling to the fact that there's now one person left from her mom's side of the family around that she could hang with. Not to mention help him work to recover some of his telekinetic powers. Seems like there'd be few people around better qualified to help him than her. Plus Hope is her adopted niece in a way, and Scott's her dad. Wolverine's the guy who killed her mom, even if she did want that to happen. They just never seem to do much with Rachel anymore despite all the potential there.
